As a separated dad, I can confirm that doing the absolute bare minimum gets you hero status to the rest of the world. I was absolutely horrified when a work colleague once said I was "a great dad" just for having anything to do with my son after my ex and I split up. That's a horrifically low bar

I feel the same exact way, I’m a single dad of a now 18 year old daughter, and everyone has always given me so much credit for just being around and present. She’s my child, it’s my responsibility to take care of her, and I love doing it, I don’t deserve a medal for that.
Recently my mom praised a father who lives in a different city for driving 1 hour to see his son on his birthday. I told her (respectfully) that's what he's supposed to do!!! What possibly could be more normal than a parent celebrating their own kid's birthday??
I just watched her Netflix special, it was one of the best stand ups I've ever watched! She is truly a gem.

There are plenty of male comedians that are extremely sarcastic about their kids and/or wife but that's different , apparently.
Most comedians include themselves in the jokes. Not a gendered thing among comedians. Not a gendered thing among audiences.

When I was 11 I saw my mom watching this on tv before my parents divorced and I had it like in my brain but I only remembered it when I watched her Netflix special at about 13 and I remembered and had some pretty strong realizations. All this to say I love this bit:)

She comes off as shallow and exhausting. It's not that I dislike this becaues she's a woman, I dislike it because I see her as an uninteresting *person* without a unique angle or good sense of humor. If that was *the* female perspective, I wouldn't want to interact with women at all. Thankfully, a lot of gals (or most, I'd wager) are not like this.
I don't know how much of herself she puts into her stage character, but if it's a lot, her 3y.o. daughter seems to be more mature, intelligent and thoughtful than her. I'd like to see her standup on what a moron her mother is.
d4n4nable , fair enough, that is how I feel with the majority of the male comedians I see, but I realize that is part if their schtick and can appreciate it. I just feel that most men have a lower tolerance threshold for trying to understand female comedians in general if their subject material is based on a female's day-to-day experiences (which they see as boring/uninteresting), and therefore make a blanket statement that women are not funny.

I really like Katherine but this isn't anywhere near what she's capable of. I know comics only get a small amount of time on Conan but she's rushing through the jokes. She's not giving herself a chance to breathe, or the audience a chance to get on board with the set up before they hear the punch line. She's stepping on her own toes here which is a shame. Seems like it was just nerves.
She's normally great though.
Also, if you're the kind of person that came here just to dislike the video or say "Women aren't funny", I'm sure she's flattered you managed to find the time in between crying in to your microwave burrito's to click on the video.

It was a fine set. Nothing great, nothing really terrible. I don't know why people have to be extreme in saying either all women are funny or no women are funny. It's the same for men, some are in fact funny, some are not.

Well, in my opinion, the 5 minute talk show format isn't a lot of people's forte. Kathrine, for example, shines more in the spontaneous off-the-cuff stuff, and more so in the long-form story based call-backs. This video is more of a drive-by...machine gunning as much stuff as she can. If you want to see her in true form, check out her concert on Netflix "Kathrine Ryan: In Trouble"...that's where she shines.
Katherine Ryan is genuinely one of the better female comedians.. people have got to stop trying to tear them all down because they do take it to heart.
her netflix special is much more natural (bearing in mind she has to keep this version clean for television), relaxed and very, very funny. give it a watch, she's great.

seems to be a case of her chosen material. remember that commercial where Seinfeld was in Britain bombing at his show then went around learning the local culture and that saved his show. she seems a bit like that.

Mums (or Moms) are the most judgemental people on the planet, to other women. As a dad, I get a free pass... I can turn up late to school, the kids can have their uniforms inside-out and I get nothing but sympathy from the mums at the school gate. My Mrs is scowled at for not giving the kids the latest iPhone.
Thank you for writing that. It's the same everywhere. I will never understand this cultural norm of shaming women. It's especially harmful when they do it in front of the woman's kid(s). That trains those kids to value their mothers less, and the cycle continues. Mother-in-laws are the worst offenders. At least, mine was.

Okay, on videos like these, I always see comments about "all the salty men" who "can't take a joke" and there are LOTS of those comments. They claim there are TONS of men saying she's awful, but I can never find those comments. The most criticism I see is from people saying she's funnier as a panel guest on British shows... I don't see the "insecure men" but I do see a lot of people pretending the comments are filled with them...

Not sure what's going on in this comments section, but I'm an American guy and I like her sense of humor. And to be perfectly honest, there are other comedians (including female ones) I don't find funny. Point is, we've all got our own cups of tea, and we can all sip them together without imposing our preferences on each other. We like different comedians, and you don't like the ones I like? Who cares. It's actually a good sign, that we have a society that is blessed with variety and diversity.
