  • A 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge parked in my small town for over two decades was "Not For Sale" until I saw it on Ebay. To my surprise this unobtanium magical red creation built by Pontiac at the pinnacle of the Muscle Car era was up for grabs. I knew the owner because we had developed a friendship over our shared appreciation of Pontiacs. Driving by the Judge made any day better just knowing, that such a rare car might be for sale one day in my hometown of Pinson, Alabama.
    History
Legend surrounding this GTO Judge tells us that a Black Birmingham, Alabama Police Officer ordered the car new. Now you may say what is the big deal? Birmingham's history during the Civil Rights movement was volatile regarding the Birmingham Police, Bull Conner, and clips shown across the globe of dogs unleashed on peaceful protestors in 1963. Birmingham's first Black Police Officer, Leroy Stover, served from 1966 until 1998 for the city. It was a difficult time in the Magic City, especially for a police officer. I imagine that any officer driving a bright red muscle car would turn heads. In 1970, I'm sure this 4-speed Judge made an impression at the Police Station and all across the city. The search continues to find out that original owner's name.
Drop a comment if you've got a hometown legend rotting away in plain sight or hidden.

Per the invoice, this car has an open differential, Safe T Track is not listed. Neither are Rally Gauges, or the hood tach.

They were great cars for the times. we had two of them in our little town. I did love watching them cruise the main and yes they could lay down a bunch of rubber.

Pretty cool story! I've always loved The Judge's. The small town find I like the story I told you a few months back of finally getting the owner of a black and gold '78 Trans Am that had been sitting, to sell it to my dad. My dad drives it all the time now.

Basically this guy says " I always wanted a GTO Judge so I could set it outside and watch it deteriorate into dust" These people always amaze me "It's not for sale" But it sits for 40 years and gets to the point it is not restorable, I can't tell you how many Chevelle SS I have come across the owner say I" I am going to restore it" , 10 years later still sitting there and that fat ass is sitting watching TV drinking beer. JUST SELL IT SO SOMEONE CAN TAKE CARE OF IT!!

Exactly I did I had a 70 ss I had just started a business a knew I was not able to afford to restore it at the time so I sold it the new owner restored it and it looks great sure I miss it but it found a new life and I don't regret my decision

I have the same story orange 69 #Matching Judge set so long eventually was up to the frame in mud 😢 and way beyond the point that I could do anything with it ask him several times over the years wouldn’t budge one day. It disappeared, and I didn’t bother asking.
P.S anybody that leaves one of these cars out like this I have no respect for that decision 🤷‍♂️

You buy it and spend $100,000 to restore it or just buy one for $85,000 that’s nice

Could be right! New owner must enjoy a challenge, and have lots of money. :)
Dreamers will keep dreaming about finding one "in their price range" ...someday. We'll keep looking, dreaming, and stopping by for the story.

I'm thinking 35k could have it restored decently. Those engines are not hard to get going. Most labor will go on bodwork/roof area.

The only thing I find off or suspecious about this car is all the Judge decals shown are not the correct color spec for a Cardinal red Judge where as the eyebrow stripes are correct. Someone has changed these at some point but the question is why?

Even classic car sale stories involve racism now? The black ghost hemi challenger was also owned by a black police officer there was no oh wow moment for the owner of the challenger being black

    • @Junkyardlife
      @Junkyardlife  6 месяцев назад +1

I'm sure it was tough being a cop in Detroit. But really? Do you think Detroit Police work was tougher than working in Birmingham? The facts are that in 1970 Birmingham was a city known throughout the world as home of "Bull" Connor, fire hoses, police dogs, and white supremacist just a few years earlier. This state has moved beyond those terrible acts of violence and cowardice. Because we refuse to let that history be forgotten. Civil Rights, Alabama, and Birmingham are synonymous. A black Birmingham police officer driving a new, bright red 1970 GTO Judge in 1970 was courageous. That part of the story needed to be told.
      Thanks for watching.

@@Junkyardlife it was so bad but yet there were black police officers driving brand new flashy muscle cars, getting mortgages to buy homes, and having families. I'm not saying it wasn't bad back then but if it was as bad as the zionist news told you it would have been impossible for this story
