- In this report, our team travelled to Velyka Novosilka where the Ukrainian army has penetrated the frontline 6 kilometers deep. We meet with the crew of the French light tank AMX-10RC and documented the results of Russian occupation in the newly liberated villages of Neskuchne and Storozheve.

All these weapons have a particular situation to be used in. Those AMX things are more like infantry support for the follow up forces to get any stubborn bunkers the spearhead bypassed. They are not meant to be a spearhead like a heavy tank like Chally 2. Cheers for the report . Glory to the Heroes UA.
Yep,
They are to be used as "light cavalry", providing recon, covering flanks, harrassing ennemy rear...
And if there is nothing else available, provide a fast support with a good punch to help an other unit to get out of a bad situation, but it would be costly.

There is one subconscious bias that I believe many people without a lot of familiarity with military history and military science suffer: they see that overlay map showing all of the lines that represent Orc defensive preparations, and they are impressed by how extensive it is. There are lines all over the place! Lines going this way and lines going that way. Long lines, short lines, thin lines, fat lines; lines that connect, and lines that only come close to connecting. Lines with right angles, lines with obtuse angles, and probably even some with acute angles. It looks complicated, big and imposing. And it most certainly IS a major reason why it is taking Ukraine time to progress.
But it is fundamentally a primitive system of trenches, dugouts, minefields, obstacle and bunkers. Human beings have been defeating these sorts of defensive preparations for millennia. The way to be successful in defeating such defenses is to go slow, to proceed carefully, to analyze the enemies positions, identify its weaknesses, and then use whatever capacity one has at hand to "prepare" the battlefield or the theatre for efforts to breach those defenses. In the case of geographically widespread defenses like these, and in the absence of a massive advantage in combat power, the way to proceed is to take it in small bites. Bite off, or "gnaw off" as Girkin used to say, manageable chunks which allow for reasonable prospects of success without unfavorable loss ratios, consolidate, repeat. Another operational method available in this day and age is to use long-range reconnaissance and long-range fires to interdict those rear area support elements which assist the front line infantry holding those dug in positions: artillery, air defense, ammo, fuel, supply, troop concentrations, command & control, transport, reserve combat vehicles and troops. This latter, long-range form of attack, is one on which Ukraine has been intensely focused for weeks, months really and arguably since before the offensive was announced as being "official."
No matter how big, impressive and complex a system of below ground defenses are, they are only as good as: (a) the infantry sitting in them and defending against attackers; (b) the artillery available to interdict attackers whenever they approach and in particular when they seek to breach minefields. In the absence of food, water, medicine, ammo and other basic supplies those infantry cannot, and will not hold those positions indefinitely. The same applies to artillery crews: without supplies, and in particular with fewer and fewer guns, the power of those defenses are weakened.
While it is a natural human bias to focus on "ground gained" as the marker of progress in this sort of warfare, this is arguably the tip of the iceberg in that: that progress made by ground forces moving forward and taking control of positions formerly defended by Orcs is a manifestation of a much larger, more complex and orchestrated set of offensive activities, which include "stretching" Orc forces by maintaining pressure at multiple separated localities along the front, thus reducing the defenders capacity to accumulate reserves or to allocate reserves advantageously.
It is worth noting here that: the overall offensive method I am describing her is, as far as I'm aware, almost the identical method which was used last fall to eventually force the Orcs to withdraw from the right-bank of the Dnieper River. It is the smart and sensible method given the assets and relative combat power which Ukraine enjoys. This is not a "shock and awe" Desert Storm method of warfare, because Ukraine's Western Partners have not afforded anything remotely resembling that level of combat capabilities. In order to expect some sort of Desert Storm lightning war, it would have been necessary for Ukraine to have been provided with much more of every sort of capability they have been given, and moreover to have been given enormous quantities of various capabilities which they have so far NOT been given, most notably air power.
Yes, things are going slowly, but Ukraine does not seem to be faltering. Orc assets are being destroyed at high rates. Progress is being made, and Ukraine is showing remarkable leadership, discipline and bravery in how it operates. These methods WORKED to "liberate Kherson," though it did take nearly three months. There is no reason they cannot work to break Orc defenses in the south. When that happens, when the Ukrainians achieve a significant breakthrough that penetrates all the way behind the Orcs defensive preparations--and indeed even before that culmination point--the nature of this war is going to change dramatically. Things will become more fast-paced and chaotic and we are likely to begin to see dramatic changes more rapidly. Because of actions Ukraine is taking at the bottleneck between the southern Ukrainian "mainland" and the Crimean peninsula, Orc capacity to engage in an orderly retreat is likely to be highly impeded. There is the possibility that large portions of the Orc forces in southern Zaporizhia are stranded, cut off or surrounded, or else are stuck in massive traffic jams where they become sitting ducks for HIMARS. If by some miracle Russian forces manage an extremely disciplined fighting retreat, that might never happen. They did manage this to a notable extent in their pullout from Kherson, but the man who led that withdrawal (Surovikin) was sacked for doing it and apparently has been taken in to custody by the Putin regime for his suspected involvement with Prigozhin. Similar fates have befallen many of the Orcs commanders who have either shown their competence in how they led their forces or expressed complaints about the top leadership in the Orc military.
We shall see what transpires in the coming six months to year, but my bet is on Ukraine achieving the liberation of all of the southern Ukrainian mainland at some point in that timeframe and in so doing putting Crimea under dire threat. Such dire threat in fact, that the rate at which things change in the war is likely to accelerate dramatically from that point onward. The prospects of this happening are augmented by the impending arrival of various Western arms donations this fall/winter: F16s, GLSDB, and more of various other stuff.
I can't wait for them to make a movie out of this book.
This got criticized by Ukrainian commanders for lack of protection from shelling, but there was a big blowback from military specialists who commented its a reconnaissance vehicle, not a heavy tank, and the criticism dried up. Perhaps they adjusted their tactics when using it.

We can replace stuff - people we can't. That is one big difference between Russian and NATO equipment. In the west we prefer to keep our troop alive.

These are ideal for current tactics. Driving up fast and striking Russian positions and getting out of Dodge fast to get away from Russian artillery. After that the Ukrainian artillery does counter battery fire and the whole thing starts again until the Russian army runs out of guns/ammo.
And if you hit a mine doing that you can afford to lose one or two wheels and possibly still get back to safety.

the AMX10 lacks armour, it is not exactly built for frontal assault on well defended positions. On the other hand, it will excel in fast movement after a breakthrough. Here's hoping the Ukrainian forces will use it for what it is good at.

The Russians have spotted the gap they have in lighter , highly maneuverable , very accurate Artiller & are working to do the same as the supplied to Ukraine , the French AMX-10 adding to their fire & manouver ability .
Modernization of self-propelled artillery units based on the upgraded BMP-3 chassis is underway. These vehicles, equipped with a 120mm mortar (experimental design work “Vena”) and a 152mm cannon, can significantly increase the effectiveness of motorized rifle units,” the Russian company said.
Russia are now building similar on a BTR3 Body & mounting a smaller calibre gun but I doubt they can evolve the quick change tactics, target management or highly accurate weapon as the French have supplied to Ukraine .

the AMX10 RC has a very good night sighting system. I doubt that the Russians can now have an equivalent since the modernization of their sighting systems (T-72M, Ka-52, SU-30...) were provided... by the French.
