1 was better, sharper, and had blacker humor. There is a mildness in season 2 that undermines the show's satirical tone and tension; the formula that they re-used turned out no new insights this time, from season 1.

S2 had vastly superior cinematography. It was not so much about conflicts and power dynamic between rich white patrons and local employees, like in S1, and more about power and money and people who want them in general. Not that far apart, but it expanded on the theme.
Sadly, no vacation will ever feel complete now if I'm not being cursed by an artichoke-wielding Sicilian granny, after I had sex with an Essex boy who just topped his fake uncle, after my friend showed me pictures of her kid who looks so much like her trainer, wink wink, but before I shoot all the dangerous high-end gays carrying a fashionable black rope.

Both were fantastic but Season 1...well mostly because Armond. Seeing these guests from his perspective and then experiencing his downward spiral was both hilarious and tragic. Season 2 didn't have characters we could connect to as easily and also lacked a bit of the sharp humor. Still a fantastic show.

Just as a side note I thought it was such a nice touch that the DeGrassi family still turned up at their homecoming without a translator, and didn't seem to care for the first 5 minutes about making a good impression - like they just yelled in English & it was only once that Albie used a translator. It was such a perfect reflection of them as men that they have never *really* put the work into relationships with the women around them & then act jaded when it doesn't go their way.

I liked the parallel between Albie and Olivia (from season 1), both being outwardly "progressive" with the things they say, but it not actually reflecting their true beliefs. It's just lip service, and both seem to just use it as part of rebelling against their parents. In the end we see both of them being just the same as their parents. Albie is even worse than Olivia because he throws his mother under the bus.

i really liked albie's character at first, his performative reactions were more subtle than olivia's so it took me longer to see his true intentions but this is so real. the annoyed reactions directed towards his dad and grandfather objectifying women, yet in one of the last shots a woman walks by and they all turn and stare.
there wasn't even really any meaningful conversations between him and lucia, their sex and her "safety" were of the only things discussed. he'd gone to so much effort to be her savior not because it was the right thing to do, but because he was receiving something from her. he didn't care when it didn't work out despite betraying his mother [essentially] for sex, as he was immediately ogling at women in the airport and exchanging numbers with portia. sex is both nothing and everything to them, they're all the same.

    • @askapaskrn
      @askapaskrn Год назад +41

@@pbnj0 Yes and because he positions himself by default as the "good" guy vs his dad and granddad as "bad" he doesn't have to examine his own behavior because he thinks he's already done, as if unlearning sexism isn't a lifelong constantly ongoing process, which ironically will lead him to make the same choices as his dad and treat women the same way.
It's tragic in a way because he seems like he truly believes himself to be a good person and different from other sexist men. I like Albie as a character study, and I love that they did that final shot of him subconcsiously copying his dad so there's no doubt for the audience, there's no room to argue that he was "actually a nice guy". No, he's the same.

I think S1 was more comical and the satire was more on the nose. The dialogue was more witty and the conversations about social/political issues were more nuanced, for e.g the scene where Mark finds out his father died of aids and the hilarious conversation with Olivia and Paula that follows. S2 was more dark and heavy. The characters were a bit more complicated and harder to perceive. Plus the demise of Tanya is depressing bc you know how much she just wanted to be loved. I think both seasons offer something different which is why the show is amazing.

The loutish drinking where he would quickly veer into scary dominating behavior was one clue (coupled with how he spitefully threw Portia's phone out of the car in the last episode). The second clue--Jack was fine joining an elaborate criminal plot to kill someone for their money. Jack was a handsome guy, so he had options to not involve himself in this. Yet he did with eyes wide open. Two big red flags that Jack was not a good guy, much less a "wounded bird." Tortured and desperate, yes. But morally good--hell to the no. Albie's money could not have saved someone this morally decayed.

@@Luboman411 Does "wounded bird" mean "morally good"? And what do you mean that "Jack was a handsome guy, so he had options to not involve himself in this"?
What we know is about Jack is that he's from the bottom of the class ladder, and he's found himself here, on the abused end of an psychologically and likely sexually abusive relationship. A relationship with a powerful, wealthy man whom he owes a debt of some kind to. In a show that has strong themes of class and sexual politics.
Jack mirrors Lucia, who uses her sexuality as a means of financial empowerment, and who PRETENDS to be in some sort of abusive situation in order to manipulate Albie. Jack on the other hand actually is being exploited and (it sounds like) is indebted to a mafia-adjacent *pimp*.
I'm just saying, if we heard his whole story, we might sympathize a little more with him lol. For sure, he's scary and likely violent. I still hope he finds the help he needs.

I think purely based on comical satire - season 1 wins hands down! It was brilliant writing combined with an eclectic talented cast and crisp episode production with no time to waste - the tension was palpable not just for the characters but also for the audience watching. Season 2 had a huge burden but it worked brilliantly by exploring a different theme and taking us into a new and slightly darker world with much more deception than season 1 and that's why it worked in my opinion. I loved both seasons but I missed Armond greatly - he was such a brilliant character. To lose Tanya this season was equally sad but I hope they bring Jennifer back for a different character maybe? Or perhaps Tanya's ghost can haunt greg to his death next season and that will be the true end for her character arc - either way I'm VERY EXCITED for the future of this series!

Apart from Greg (solely to see him pay for Tanya's demise), I'd love to watch the downward spiral of Ethan and Harper as they have both crossed boundaries and can never set things back. Cameron and Daphne are already messed up as individuals and so is their relationship - it is true to who they are. But with Ethan and Harper, we can actually see how the cheating and deception, which is against their principles, slowly ruins them in the end. I'd love to see Ethan, Harper, Greg and Tanya back but I'm also game for a completely new set of dysfunctional characters!

Last year or so, I was sitting at my computer, I was looking up on google for HBO's best shows since I was bored and The White Lotus came up and said it was a murder mystery. I thought I'd give it a watch (and it took place in hawaii and I was going to hawaii for vacation soon), one thing that kept me hooked was showing us that someone had died (which is a good hook), but I was confused as the episodes went by. My mind was was like "Is this even a murder mystery? Did that website make a mistake?" At this point the eerie and sinister instrumentals paired with scenes of the waves and ocean were the only things keeping me watching the show because those legitimately chilled me to the bone and I eventually realized that those eerie scenes represented the sinister undertones of everyday life in the hotel and that on the surface everything looks normal and by the last episode I was SHOCKED i was GAGGED. I LOVED the show and i was SO excited when there'd be season two and the two actors I LOVE were gonna be in it: Aubrey Plaza and Theo James.
Season two definitely stood out even more with undertones that were twice, if not, 4 times more sinister than in the first episode. The new season definitely impacted me more than the first because I was too focused on being confused as to WHAT the show even was in s1, but both seasons are EPIC.

Both seasons were great but my definite preference was Season 1. It dealt with a more complex array of issues (class, race, money) while 2 focused primarily on sexual politics. Also I just really enjoyed Season 1 satire which was brilliant and hilarious -- even though the show was simultaneously so tragic. It was a bit of a gut-punch when that young woman stayed with her horrible husband in the end. Not to mention the young biracial girl and Hawaiian boy. Finally, I thought the acting and character development was consistently fantastic for every character in 1. Don't get me wrong, the acting was great in season 2 (for example, especially Daphne) but the acting of even the minor characters in season 1 was just amazing ( like Molly Shannon) and added so much to the show.
Anyway it's so interesting to read the strong opinions on both sides for season 1 vs 2. I think it's a statement on Mike White's genius and I can't wait for season 3 so the debate can continue! :)

I really preferred Season 2! Lots more engagement for me in all the facets and details of all the characters and their relationships to each other. I saw S1 as focused so much on that truly disgusting character and I thought that the only mystery was when and how was her going to kill his wife, for not being the perfect little wifey to his distasteful, entitled 'husband' character. Murray was great but also a bit tragic and sad.
Season 2 had my heart from the get go since I adore the Italian language, culture, scenery, etc. The music was better in season 2 as well. Being a huge opera fan I love the addition of operatic music and intrigue. Although I will miss Tanya, I think it was the only death I (and lots of other fans) didn't expect. I mean we were worried and thought there was some plot against her, (some prenup clause re; adultery...) but if they wanted to kill her, why not back in Palermo instead of near the hotel? Loved her rampage before falling overboard. Kept waiting for her to suddenly take a breath and come to the surface but alas the heroine of our opera perished..... 🎼 😢

They wanted to kill Tanya on the yacht because of plausible deniability--killing someone way out there, in the open sea, is way easier in terms of getting rid of crucial evidence. So the plan was to isolate Tanya with Niccolo the prostitute/mafia hitman. The best way to do this was to lure Tanya out there on a "romantic" boat ride back to the mainland with Niccolo as her boat guy. He had a rope, a gun and some duct tape ready to go in his bag. I bet he had a huge rock in the boat. So the best way to get rid of Tanya would've been to shoot her in the head, tie up her body, weigh her down with a rock, and push her body into the sea, where she would sink to the bottom. A very mafia way of killing someone. Of course, Tanya's inadvertent call with Portia totally disrupted this plan.

I knew Jack wasn't Quentin's nephew bc of their accents. I felt it was inaccurate that Quentin would have a perfectly posh accent and then just one generation later Jack would be all "Essex boy"

0:44 much smaller budget? I found it hard to believe, but it is true. From what I gathered, both seasons costed $3M a episode, while Knives Out costed $40M. That's insane ._. WL looked so expensive! Those shots underwater... I don't know

Yes this show could really go on forever! And I will be watching! It combines beautiful vacations with hyper-reality, which is like everyone’s favorite things. They hit the jackpot. It’s done way better than knives out imo.
I also predict they will be doing a back and forth each season where the “rich” “win” and then the “poor” “win”.

It's the new Agatha Christie, where the viewers are the Poirot before the murder even happens.

Enjoyed both seasons. The music is subliminally fantastic. A few loose ends/things that didn't quite make sense like the trouble they went to cater to Tanya at the villa and boat back if only to knock her off. We thought Greg would appear w a blackmail scheme using a sex vid of her and the gigolo. Whatever, still a great season.

Nobody is ever going to start an exclusive hotel chain called The White Lotus because everyone will be afraid they'll wind up dead. It's a great Hitchcockian gimmick, let everyone know someone is going to die and let them try to figure out who it might be.

    Two observations.
    1. One of the creepiest things about the theme music is the incredibly slow and lumbering tempo of the percussion. It's so unrelenting.
    2. When Tanya grabs the bag and locks herself in a bedroom as she searchers the bag for the gun, she already knows the five men on the boat are going to kill her and it's only a matter of seconds before they kick the door in. Yet when she opens the bag and pulls out the kidnap kit, she pauses for the longest time to look in shock and horror at the rope as she turns it around in her hands to examine it. Absolute comedy gold.

On a personal note, I have a hard time paying attention, I always have a ton of things on my mind, and especially nowadays with so many options and screens and it makes it hard for me to follow a show. White Lotus is the sort of superb content that just instantly grabs your attention 100%. For the length of the episode(s) you are just THERE. Ironically enough, it's really good at escapism.
