  • I've always wanted to try freezing liquid nitrogen solid. At first, this might seem like something that's really hard to do, but it's actually relatively simple. All I need is a vacuum chamber, and a small dish.

    That wasn't actually a bubble, it's way cooler than that! It was a liquid droplets suspended above the rest of the liquid by the leidenfrost effect. Usually it holds liquids above solids but it also works for liquids over liquids under the right conditions. I've actually done this with an ammonium hydroxide solution I was refluxing before. It's supper cool!

    This video is proof that Nitogen has actual emotions for some reason.
    That one bubble was bouncing because the nitrogen was exited to be solidified.
    And at the end when it got turned into a liquid again, the nitrogen was sad, because being solid is much more fun.
    And if chemicals can have emotions, they can have names too.
    So I am hereby naming that little dish of nitrogen: Nitrogwen!

    When I was a physics undergrad, I worked in a lab that needed to run an amplifier stage at liquid helium temperatures, so I got to help a grad student test mosfets in a liquid helium bath. To conserve the helium, we'd precool our setup in liquid nitrogen. Some of the nitrogen would pool on top and a couple times stayed there long enough to get dunked in helium. It would come out of the helium frozen and last a bit longer than yours did. That's my recipe for nitrogen ice. The vacuum chamber is a good technique.

    Hook up a helium bottle and regulator and repress to ambient with that. The He doesn't condense and you can keep your solid nitrogen.
    I used a vacuum insulated cup (a soda can holder) and put a sheet of saran wrap over the top with a ~1" hole. This allowed the nitrogen vapor to escape, but helped hold the cold GHe near the surface and prevented melting. The deeper container took a while to freeze but had more capacity vs surface area.

    I do research in cryogenics and have worked with "slush" nitrogen before. Due to the latent heat of fusion it has better heat transfer when cooling materials down. This is because, in liquid nitrogen, a thin layer of vapor envelops the material being cooled, thus dampening the cooling rate via the Leidenfrost Effect. That being said, I haven't really seen much of a benefit to using it for cooling over normal liquid nitrogen, so it seems like it's mostly hype. It's also finicky to keep slushy if not in a vacuum as it rapidly melts. There is a company that makes a device that claims it holds nitrogen as a slush, but I found the same problem as you, where it simply rapidly melts and sublimes.

  • @danielsieker9927
    @danielsieker9927 2 года назад +25

    Almost every substance has a triple point, below which, in pressure and temperature, only gas and solid can exist. I would assume that the nitrogen was only solid because it went beyond that point in pressure rather than being cold enough at normal pressure, which is why it melted so quickly when the air came back into the chamber

    • @hnoel9221

    • @DANGJOS
      @DANGJOS Год назад +1

      @@hnoel9221 That's not correct. The actual temperature of the nitrogen is dropping as the pressure drops. This drop in temperature is what freezes the nitrogen.

    • @DANGJOS
      @DANGJOS Год назад +1

      @Daniel Sieker The nitrogen became solid because its temperature dropped below the triple point temperature. If he didn't lower the pressure, but only decreased the temperature, it would still freeze at a similar temperature. It would probably freeze at a slightly higher temperature at atmospheric pressure, but this effect is small. It's the decreasing temperature that freezes the nitrogen, not the decreasing pressure on its own. Decreasing the pressure just allows you to decrease the temperature without a cold source.

    I have a theory for what's going on at 1:40
    Liquid Nitrogen probably has a poor thermal conductivity, like many liquid gases. It therefore must rely on convection to distribute heat. The surface cools due to evaporative cooling, and the colder nitrogen sinks to the bottom of the dish and is warmed by the heat from the vacuum chamber floor. It rises and the process repeats. However, once the surface gets cold enough to freeze, this frozen nitrogen can't convect, and therefore insulates the liquid below. The warming liquid increases its vapor pressure beneath the ice, warms up more and melts the ice covering. This process repeats a couple of times until the liquid is able to sustain cooling (especially if it pushed enough of the ice out of the way to surface cool). This allows the entire thing to freeze.
