One of my favorite Neil Young songs. I wasn't aware that some folks thought of this song as being milquetoast. I always found it to be a plaintively wanting song.
Neil Young is one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriters. I love it when songs are written from experience, as they tend to be performed with more emotion... a more intimate look into their soul.
Oh my what can't you say about Neal? That haunting declaration of a voice. He always making you wanting more. And he certainly delivers. Time and Time again. Great presentation Beth, truly.
Even though he's sitting and leaning into the Mike as a way of singing with a previous back injury certainly didn't mean that he was restricted in his uniquely dynamic voice and mesmerizing story telling. Just nobody ever could replace him. Thank you Beth, I agree, it's a beautiful thing.
I love this song, but go find the performance of Helpless from The Last Waltz. Joni Mitchell was the backup singer, and just spooky great. I do wonder how aware the audience was aware of the greatness that they were witnessing.
It's funny, I was just listening to this song this past weekend and I was struck once again by the wonderful harmonies at the end. I was hoping you'd mention Linda Ronstadt and sure enough, you did! (Even if she isn't on this live solo version).
Interesting, Iwas listening to Powderfinger yesterday. I refuse to pick a favorite Neil Young song. Also loved hearing the harmonies with Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor.
They were all taking a break and this guy was walking down the sidewalk carrying a banjo. Neil asked if he could play it. The guy said yes. He laid down the Banjo part and left never got his name and never got credit on the album.
Neil once said that 'Heart of Gold' put him in the middle of the road - but the middle of the road is boring, he headed straight for the ditch on his next album. Neil's a unique musical genius for sure, whether behind his acoustic guitar, or strapping on Old Black and letting loose with Crazy Horse. Great choice, and great reaction as always - cheers from Canada!
I love both songs from personal experience and songs that are more grand and conceptual. I love Neil Young, Cat Stevens et al. But I love Yes and Genesis too. There is plenty of room for both
Greetings again. Brilliant review. I was lucky to see him at the Glasgow Apollo in 1976 then many years later at the Hydro in Glasgow. A favourite artist and I love both songs from the heart and the Ditch Trilogy. Thank you, Howard.
Same concert as this and old man....please check out Birds or Love in Mind...two incredible songs...maybe a total of 5 minutes between the two...thank you for your reactions
Oh to Live on Sugar Mountain. With the barkers and the colored balloons. One of my favorites of his. BTW, when I find Boudleaux Bryant's demo of Love Hurts, I'll get it to you. I haven't forgot, just been extremely busy all summer. Even had to give playing in a cover band a break.
What an amalgamation of true artistic talent...Linda, James, Neil...turns out heavenly. Just about anything NY writes is close to home...fine with me...makes it human. Get your partner, put on 'Harvest Moon' and head for the dance floor. ❤
Positive songs are difficult to write, says Elvis Costello. He followed that by stating, "Any a**hole can write 'look at my wounds' music. I don't know enough to know it it's true.
Elvis Costello is always sarcastic. He wrote himself négative, sad, or angry songs, forever. Never heard a positive song from him. Maybe I forget some. And it's only my advice.
Love the reaction videos. Been listening to your album & I noticed your accent softens when u sing & I've noticed that with other singers w/accents, I'm curious with you if that's intentional or if it happens naturally when you sing
the manner of the song-writing varies in success based on the songwriter/performer... some people are storytellers and are fascinating: John Prine, Jonie Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Kate Bush, Lennon/McCartney- and some people excel at the autobio songs- such as Neil, Lou Reed (and Jonie). Pete Townshend is sometimes too much in his own head, as is Roger Waters. but I love Neil. even his "failures" aka the Geffen years were more interesting than most musicians' successes
Hello Beth, you are a beautiful woman and your analyses are wonderful, I would like you to watch the video of Toni Platão and Zélia Duncan singing "Carne e osso". Please.🤗
Seen Neil at the Glasgow Apollo 1974, have to say not one of his best and i am a fan since Buffallo Springfield days, the warm up band were better, incidently it was The Eagles.
Neil is and awesome song writer, musician and singer with an incredible range. He sort of rolls his jaw to the side when he is singing... not a common approach, imo
Hey! Anyone can learn to sing to a decent level. Just like anyone can learn to play football or get fit. The best way is working with a singing teacher/vocal coach, there are loads of wonderful teachers out there!
I used "stems" I found to do a cover version of this song and video (not intended as parody, but as tribute) a dozen years ago! FUNNY that Neil has FLOODED my "subscriptions" with stuff at the same time YOU (Beth) are "reacting" to one of his songs! ...hmm. (I'm not suspicious.) Who, Me?
I used to love this artist. Then he led the charge to censor anyone with any questions about the vax. Some day I maybe be able to listen to him, Joni Mitchell or the CSNY, but it will not be soon.

The magic of Neil Young: He could mesmerize an audience with just a guitar, his harmonica, and his voice. He is one of the all-time greats!
Neil Young the godfather of grunge.. 🎶 Hey Hey My My 🎶
My My Hey Hey
Rock and Roll can never die
This performance has a couple of brilliant songs....
Old man is one....
Fantastic
I love the way you react and express your feelings when you hear singers perform. You have my respect and admiration for the beautiful work you do!
One of my favorite Neil Young songs. I wasn't aware that some folks thought of this song as being milquetoast. I always found it to be a plaintively wanting song.
Neither did I. The only way I would understand it is that "middle of the road" just means "mainstream".
@@WhiskyCanuck Oh, that could be, perhaps I misunderstood the slang. Thank you!
Beth Roars, this videos deserves all the views
Great video! One of my favourite quotes from Mr Young was "I don't write songs, I just write them down"
This was Neil's only No. 1 song, but his legendary career was never about hit singles...
This song has often been identified as the greatest Canadian song on many best-of-lists and countdowns.
Neil Young is one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriters. I love it when songs are written from experience, as they tend to be performed with more emotion... a more intimate look into their soul.
Neil Young was my first "big" gig, at Wembley Arena, 1982, and it was a brilliant show!
Oh my what can't you say about Neal? That haunting declaration of a voice. He always making you wanting more. And he certainly delivers. Time and Time again. Great presentation Beth, truly.

Neil and his harmonica, magical.

I first saw Neil Young in 1972 and The Eagles were the support band.
Old Man is my favorite Niel Young song
Dylan mentions Neil Young in the song Highlands, where he sings that when he listens to Neil Young, he turns up the sound 😀
Beth, you should check out Neil's Harvest Moon classic. Keep up the good work, lass.
Harvest Moon is a wonderful showing of his talent a bit later in life. GREAT VIDEO WITH THAT SONG!!!
Una canción tan bonita como mi sueño azul 💙 bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀

Neil Young. Great master of making great songs with just an acoustic guitar, a harmonica and a big heart!
I love both songs from personal experience and songs that are more grand and conceptual. I love Neil Young, Cat Stevens et al. But I love Yes and Genesis too. There is plenty of room for both

It's the way how he created and build it up the expression in song the great thing. A magic song like a few ones.

The Late Charles Bradley, The Screaming Eagle of Soul, did a cover of this song that's AMAZING.
Amazing!

If you haven't yet, please look at After the Goldrush.
Brilliant song, that also had an amazing cover done.
You might want to listen to "Helpless".
Dylan was jealous because Young is better on the harmonica.
You should check out CSNY and Tom Jones performing long time gone. Best jam session you will ever see.
Love his "A Man Needs A Maid" song.
I was introduced to Neil Young by the film Wonder Boys.
It's "middle of the road" because Neil Young is just that good.
This song was the first 45 record I bought when I was a teen, cost me 10 cents.
Nothing wrong getting bowled over colliding with Young. Strange how talented Canadians keep adopting US.
Hi ms roars!!! Love you videos❤
Beth Roars, awesome content keep it up bro
Thank you!
Lov this guy
Should try Lee Coulter, artist out of Cali that is of similar style, very positive, surely should be more famous, fantastic musician.
Been a fan of Neil since early 70s. And when he played with Crosby Stills and Nash. Pls do Old Man.. spell-binding song.
She did Old Man: ruclips.net/video/ppSF6JpdaKQ/видео.htmlsi=w5VHsqm2W6ExcemH
Love this song, but "Helpless" will always be my favorite. Maybe not a better song, but still my favorite.
I'm 59 and still searching.
And I'm getting old.💧
My biggest fear is to die alone.
Love this style of dong have you done any analysis of Joni Mitchell ?
Suggestion for reacting: Um dia, um Adeus from singer Guilherme Arantes.

Can hear how this (and Neil Young in general) may have influenced Ben Gibbard.

Guitar and vocal was ALL ME!
(only "some" of the harmonica was mine!)
Pedal steel was NOT the late-grate Herby Wallace.
(I think it was Jerry Garcia fucking around with a new toy in the background!)
Young is a great musician, yes, but the other 3 he often joined also had some nice stuff.

I gotta say,the full studio version has so much more nuance & flavor. Like b&w tv in '72 vs 75"HDTV. Not my cuppa tea, but why not...

Kurt Cobain stole a LOT from Neil Young.
