I just bought a 521 for my first nitro engine ever because it’s such a good deal and I felt Reds was a good reputable brand. My engine does the exact same stuff, idle is all over the place. I sent it off to a local rep, nice fella, he told me that when they are new that they are super tight and you have to run a bigger idle gap with a higher idle. Also he said that they are not ready for a race tune until you run at least a gallon through them and to not even attempt a race tune until you have run a gallon through it
I can agree on the the bigger idle gap and higher idle during the break in, as you run a very rich tune. But the engine should run consistent. 1 gallon is a lot. I usually run about 1 to 1,5 liter on the break in. ( About half a gallon)Than it's ready for a good tune. Still slightly rich on the highspeed needle but the engine should run perfect and consistent. If you still are having these issues after half a gallon there is definitely something not good. I suspect a bad batch of reds bearings, but the 521 doesn't come with a ceramic bearing.. You could try to replace the rear bearing if the engine keeps doing that and see if the issue is solved
@@kings-racing yea, I seen your other video and I am considering the bearing change at the moment. The idle has been getting smoother though the more fuel I run through it
I recently was experiencing the same erratic idle behavior from a .26 Sportwerks engine. Even though the engine was from the 2000’s, it was not ever run till I purchased it about 2 yrs ago. I didn’t change a bunch of stuff chasing it, I just slapped a carb off of a .21 Force I wasn’t using and it solved the idle problem 100%. I’m just thankful I had another carb to throw on. Way more snappy and crisp while getting on throttle as well. I couldn’t find anything bad on the old carb like needle o-rings, ripped or torn throttle boot, base o-rings were good, nothing. Has me baffled. I don’t recall having any problems last year is what’s getting me.I’m still eagerly anticipating the dyno videos you mentioned.
Apparently this inconsistency can't be solved by a different carb after using a os carb. Good to hear your issue got solved with that force carb. Was planning to dyno this engine first, but there is a interesting theory in the comments which makes me run another 6L through this engine. This 721 story got my dyno plans delayed. So probably gonna dyno a other engine first. It will takes some time but it's coming
Two people in new Zealand have or had this issue, one was our only pro was given one to try directly from reds. They wanted to love it, however it got sent back! I bet due to this issue
A lot of these stories on these engines. Check out the next vid i uploaded. I have a strong suspicion a batch of bad bearings went into a lot of gen2 engines.
Thanks Robert. Love running this track. And the new section is pretty challenging. I don't think a engine should be like this, but there are interesting theory's in the comments. Definitely to be continued.
Hi buddy! My gen2 scuderia have exactly the same problem, engine have 5L now et still very strong pinch like it was never broken in. Friends from my race track told me that reds need at least 10L to be ready to race, and to not try to tune it before 10L
What up Buddy. I really don't think the pinch causes the inconsistency. Got other signs, but guess we have some running to do. Have fun! Keep me posted buddy. To be continued 👊
Great driving! Sucks about the engine inconsistent idling issue. You're right a 721 stage idle is not acceptable by any standards and if Reds knew anything about this issue shame on them for releasing it to market without addressing it first. Thanks for the video bro💯🫡
Thanks bro. According to the story's and comments these 721's are special and need 10 liters to be fully broken in. I don't think that's normal, but guess we will find out in about 6 liters. Thanks for watching brother👊
@@kings-racing for mine (2nd gen 721 regular non-sv) i did a quart (1 liter) of bones breakin fuel on the hudy breakin bench followed by another quart of 30-10 on the bench then after about 1 1/4 gallon of just driving and tuning to keep it up in the 220-245*f range it broke in and seems to run ok. Its been awhile since then but i didnt experience these issues alot of people are having. Maybe i need to pull it back out and try to get some more performance out of it and see if i run into the same issues.
My 721 sv is exactly like this one(green head) gen 1 and as soon as I put a performa or nova carb on it, the idle has Ben more consistent but still not 100% to my liking like my os speeds. Iva also tried raising phc, running 25 & 30 nitro and nothing changes and I haven truly kept up with it but I’m sure I have close to a gallon on it. When it was new and breaking in, it idles absolutely perfectly. I don’t understand it and I’m no new by tuner either.
Apparently a lot of guys experience the exact same inconsistency with these engines. But also guys that don't. There is something about these engines what's causing this and i'm eager to find out what it is. Could be multiple factors. Tried a lot of different things but so far it remains inconsistent. Pulled the engine apart yesterday and did find that the rear bearing is not really good. Maybe a bad batch of bearings plays a part. I've cleaned the engine, replaced the rear bearing and will be testing again this weekend. Your story fits mine. On break in with a richer setting it was fine, but as soon as you dail it in and start running the track the inconsistency is there. To be continued. Appreciate the comment buddy..
What are the temps there? Also the fuel, is it castor oil or synthetic? Castor oil in the fuel helps. Depending on temp you would want TS3 cold and TS4 for hotter temps. The carb that's easiest to tune is CARB SET CG3 GEN1 3.5CC S SERIES BUGGY/GT (SKU ER210146). I would use a 8mm venturi to start, idle gap about 0.8-1.0mm and tune the bottom end needle to set idle rpm/mixture.
if it's not working properly, the carb or somewhere has an air leak, so I would pull it apart and inspect. Usually if something acts like it's defective, something is defective.
Thanks for the comment. You are right, something was defective. Check out the next video on the channel. It was the rear bearing. I suspect a batch of bad Reds bearings
Sad story but great video 👌 Seems like that reds cant be helped but the driving was awsome! You definitely can race that engine if you dont care about how it sounds and as long as you keep it revving high.... a shame for a 450€ engine I have to say.
Not the only story like this. Apparently these 721's are special and need 10 liters to be fully broken in. We will find out in about 6 liters. i do think it's strange there are various stories. Some people never had these issues and others do. This story definitely is going to be " to be continued." I sertainly hope the 10L theory is true. Otherwise it would be a shame.
It's really sad that your REDS doesn't work properly. I don't know if it would help if you continue to break in a few more liters or if there is an air leak somewhere. I hope you find out the reason.
it shouldn't be like this imo. And a lot guys experience the same. Others say their engine runs good. I'm pretty sure it's not a air leak and will continue a rich break in. This story will definitely have a follow up.. Appreciate the comment buddy
Man Kings-you have the worst luck with Reds engines! Both of mine run super consistent, tune like a dream, tons of power, and insane fuel mileage.. I run .026” piston to head button, and have run 30% from Bones, VP, or NitroPro without any issues, 7 or 8mm venturi, and OS P3 ultra hot plug.. Pipes are x-one 2113, and 2143, also a Hipex 2135 with either short, or medium header.. They’re both Gen2 SV’s, and have the 3needle carbs.. I don’t make BIG changes on the needles like with an OS; like 20% as much, and never adjust multiple needles. I’ll adjust one, clean it out for 80ft and back, then further changes as needed. I came up with Picco, and the Mario Rossi GRP based engines, and find they tune very similarly, just require smaller increments.. Tough to diagnose an inconsistent tune over a short video, and in text though.. Hate you’re having such terrible luck with ‘em! Thanks for another awesome vid though brother! 🤙🍺

Ran a 7mm venturi on both carbs, since that's the standard venturi that comes with it, but definitely can try 6 or 6,5.
My 16% contains 2% less oil than the 25%. This does not effect the blowdown imo. It was a bit less inconsistent on the 16%. Can't help thinking it could be a ( hardware) issue. Material or manufacturing flaw. Since a lot of guys experience the same and others don't.
Gonna do some more testing. Hoping to find out what is causing this.
Appreciate the comment buddy 👊
@@kings-racing Gotcha! ventures only takes a second as you know it could make a Big difference . Hope you Don't have a bad set of bearings But could explain a few things going on. Let me think on it a Lil More Buddy great to hear from ya just hate it's bc of this tho! TC Brother
@@ofnaguycarlwatts8602 well, ...i just changed the rear bearing and it didn't feel good. Grey ceramic sludge in the engine too. Still need to run it. Hopefully good weather this weekend. Fingers crossed. But think this is it. Probably bad batch of bearings since more guys struggling with this issue
@@kings-racing I agree Brother
I think I would put some more heat cycles on being it up to temp let her cool repeat. It sounds like an engine that isn't broken in completely to me. Some do take longer .like some my piccos 26 s. Heat cycles and tear down again then .I think you be set buddy.hope that high end Engine comes around for ya.for ya Brother.later
Very interesting
Yes indeed. This story will definitely have a follow up.
The Idle Sounds for me just a lile a Air leak🤷 but could also be the engine idk had a reds my self and after about 10L it had the same problem 😂
😂😂😂 i have a strong suspicion it's not the 10L theory. 6L to go.😂
Hy Kings ! Did you test the OS B2104 ? For you, it is a good engine ? I'm gonna install it in a future Team losi buggy.
Hello Bryan, i don't have the B2104. My friend Tasty B has it and he is very satisfied with it. I saw you got one. Think you will be very happy with it.
Looking forward to see you run it.👊
@@kings-racing I'm gonna build my tlr and break-in the OS in august !
Thanks for your help !
Damn bro so fast around the track bro well done an that Xray looks amazing bro 🤜 I know you can sort out that idle out 🤜💯💥🇦🇺
Must say the shorter chassis on the new xray suits me very well. I like it.
Think it's very interesting that there are so many various stories on these engines. But we gonna try to get to the bottom of it. Thanks for watching buddy 👊
@@kings-racing always bro love watching your videos bro you always keep it real and I appreciate that have a awesome weekend bro can’t wait to see how you go 👍🙏💯💥🇦🇺 you have to check out my engine stand to bro it’s not as good as yours but it came out great 👍
@@tonysands2837Thanks bro👊 awesome engine display💯 definitely as good as mine. Love it!👌
I got one of the new reds and it dose the same thing
Stay tuned. Interesting theory's in the comments. We will get there. Thanks for watching.
Woooo 👍always . 👍number 34 . Yes i am down with the sickness . Go Kings Go. Therspy time.🔥💪🏼👍🤙🤙✌️
Woooo🤘👍👊
i doent buy reds engines anymore ive heard nothing but horror storys of them very ionconsistant engines they didnt used to be the older ones i had were always good but the last 3 years no one seems to like them great vid brother by the way love the end screen tunes ive heard that some were before lmaooooooo
Very inconsistent. Interesting theory's in the comments. So some work to do.
Thanks bro.
Wasn't aware of the outro untill you mentioned it....but knew Freakin would love the intro lol
Hmm wow crazy how the idle is inconsistent yet the low and TSN sound great, have you considered a carb swap? I have a lot of nitros and have REDS engines in all of them(15 REDS engines) and never ran into this issue. Please post an update if resolved issue.
Spot on track driving👌👌🏅🏅🏅
Thanks brother👊. I'm not talented so need to practice a lot and have as much fun as i can🤘
Best RC Guy ever
😂😂😂thank you for your kind words.
Exactly 💯 percent a class act of a Guy.no matter what other ppl thinks of you .he is a True 💯 percent Friend hands down. I'm glad that I met King's.he needs a Big sponsorship on his professionalism. He is as good as if not better than anyone out there all around Person.much respect for King's!!
@@ofnaguycarlwatts8602 appreciate the kind words Carl, but this is really to much for a modest guy like me😊😅
She has a mind of her own😅
- You where doing pretty well on the track though. Nice work ‼️
Looking forward to future testing 🩷 Thanks for the fun vid
Interesting theories in the comments. So i will need to run 6 liters more.
Some guys tell they have exactly the same issue and others say it runs like dream.🤔
I suspect it's not a tight pinch what's causing the inconsistency, so this story will definitely have a follow up but will delay this engine's dyno test
I just love running this track and the new section is a good change. So awesome when the double double succeeds and turned the car in the air for the little straight. Very challenging
Thanks for watching buddy and shout out to you for sending people over.👊.
@@kings-racing You’re welcome for the shout-out. Happy to do it
- I have not run that engine but, I’m not thinking there is a magic amount of fuel to run through it. There may be some kind of consistent issue with the carb that a lot of people are having (or something from the design/manufacturing process)
I’ll be looking forward to your follow up 🩷
@@a2rc 😂Magic amount of fuel. That's a funny way to put it, definitely gonna keep that in.
It could be a material or manufacturing flaw, since a lot of guys experience the same and others don't.
Maybe a disturbance of the stoichiometric ratio caused by multiple factors. It's less inconsistent on a richer setting. Definitely gonna do more testing and hoping to find out what the issue is.
Sweet she’s sounds great 🤙
The first minutes were not bad at all.
Big up Kings 🤜🤛
Big up Auditing 🤜🤛thank you for sharing the video. Greatly appreciated 👊
@@kings-racing no worries. I enjoyed it so had to share. I hope you are well mate 🤜🤛
i had this problem with 2 out of 3 of my reds made me so maddddddd
Beginning to think 2 out of 3 is the ratio of guys having similar behavior on their engines and guys saying it runs like a dream. Appreciate the comment. To be continued 👊
Bro iv been keeping up with with you since day one you’ve came a long way
Wow what a track 😊 great video bro 👊🏻
It's so awesome to run. Appreciate you stopping by 👊
As i know, reds has a massive pinch level. My (onroad) 721 pista's did exact the same thing. They need more liters around 8-10L than it is as they say "fully broken in" and has optimal power.
Had this info already before i bought them from someone who is in the development team of the onroad engines.
Interesting theory! I don't think the pinch causes the inconsistency, but guess i will need to burn another 6L to be sure now.
