The Y6B is still the winner on my layout on level track. My EM1 had a max pull of about 48 mixed freight cars which is really good, but my Y6B was able to pull 72 mixed freight cars at approximately 30 percent throttle.
You should look at Kato's JNR D-51, C-57, and C-62, and the two UP's, FEF-3 and Big Boy, all at N scale. Not only are they as detailed as this (or more?), they're surprisingly affordable! (this Bachmann is a few hundred more than the Kato's I've seen online)
One of these behemoths was supposed to go to the B&O Train Museum in Baltimore. Due to some snafu, that "experts" still argue over, one never made it there. Although there was an EM-1 in the yard at Butler, PA as late as 1961...
Awesome video Jimmy! Bachmann has come a long way with their models over the years and have some awesome products out now in multiple scales. Thanks for sharing about your y6b!
My mallet is still king on my layout for pulling power. It'll pull 50 cars up a 1/2% grade with no slip. My EM1 starts slipping at about 34 cars. The only loco that challenges my mallet is my gel 4400 turbine and that's really a consist so it's not a fair comparison. EM1 is a great engine though. The only issue I have with the newer bachmann steamers is they still have sloppy fitting idler gears. I've had my Em1 jump a tooth before and had to open the driver set to fix the quarter issue. It's been very good since though. I would buy it again.
well i have an athearn big boy that pulled 144 coal cars on a level layout with out issue on the nys&a. i have a video on my channel so you can see it and count them. my athearn challenger pulled 88 cars on the same layout but i didnt video it. sorry for that but they are all good haulers with lots of power for such a little loco. i mean to just pull those cars with your hand is heavy. thanks for shareing
My dcc EM-1 was able to haul all 55 MTL light and weighted mixed freight cars with no issue. Our club layout mind you has 3 seperate 2.3% grades. My only issue is going to try and speed match it with my BLI Y6B once BLI is done working on it.
Hello Jimmy love the videos and you do a great job of explaining things. I'm drinking Lipton unsweetened black iced tea. You have explained and done multiple videos on the use of arduinos, however I have what I believe is a unique question, 0 scale is mostly tmcc and dcs so I'm wondering how could I incorporate the use of arduinos for my layout?
Great video Jimmy… I have ONE steam locomotive in my collection. It’s a TEENY TINY little 0-6-0 bachmann that came with my first starter set… the tender has 3283 printed on it (DAVE) if you remember the old telephone sequence…. I HAD TO GET IT! It was a message from GOD ! The train already has my name on it!!!! …and that’s how I justified my first $125. Purchase…tell your wife that it’s for the sake of science and industry… AND you maybe have to get more rolling stock for the “correct” calculation. Thanks for the video, enjoy your trains CMF
I've been looking at getting one of them Yellowstones but I wanted to make sure it could pull good. Looks like it can so I think I know what locomotive I'll be getting next lol
Between the 20 and the 25 second of your video shows a loose pin in the side rods up front. You might want to check that out. One reason I hardly buy steamers in N scale because I can't fix it without breaking it more. Don't get me wrong, I love steam locomotives as long I don't have to mess with a problem with it.
Hello there! So I have been watching you for a few months now and have loved the content. One question I have for you is, do you think Bachmann is starting to make a push to get a higher status within the N Scale community? I feel like a ton of people trash them but my Bachmann stuff is great. I know they arent BLI or Kato, but do you think they are trying to work up to that? or do they just have a bad wrap for whatever reason? I know they dont have top notch detail but I feel like my loco and rolling stock do well with just about everything else I have. Thanks for all the great content, keep it up!
When did this EM-1 from Bachmann come out? I bought one last year, and it cost me a small fortune because I couldn’t find anyone who had them in stock! I had to get mine from a small retailer in Germany. Factory Direct has them, and I’m shocked!
Sorry, Jimmy, but I just cannot believe your test. Either you have some very light cars, or you lucked out with the Y6b, and maybe EM-1. After your review of the Y6b, and that of other people, I decided to buy one. The loco does not fit either of my eras (I model 1972 on my home layout and 2018 on my club's layout) but I love the Y6b. However, when I tested my purchase on the club's layout, where we have a maximum of 1.5% grades, and where the entire train is on the grade, the loco basically failed - it could only pull 15 boxcars, weighted to NMRA standards. On level track, it was able to pull 22 cars. I actually returned it to BLI and after waiting some 3 months, they said that it performed similar to their stock locomotives. So, did I get a lemon, or is there something about your layout and rolling stock that skews the performance? I don't know, but I now know that I can no longer translate your results into what I would expect from a locomotive. 😩
I think it was your engine. My y6b pulls fifty on level track, and is limited by coupling failures on the cars. (A number of my cars have extra rolling drag because I weathered them and sprayed Dullcote on them while the wheels & trucks were still on.)
Even in real life the Y6b has more tractive effort than the Big Boy, even the Erie Triplex had a higher tractive effort than the Big Boy. Just because it is the biggest locomotive doesn't mean it is the most powerful. The Big Boy was meant to pull fast freights over the mountains vs. heavy coal drags that require more power.
Thanks, but I was talking about the models themselves being that the BLI Big Boy is heavier and bigger than the mallet, that it would out pull the mallet. Maybe it's because it has more traction tires.
I have been very impressed with mine. It cost me $750.00 That was $100.00 less than I was expecting to pay. I want to get another one and try to modify it to an AC-9
I guess your explanation to your wife will have such highlights like passing 55k subscribers, 600 videos and other goodies that youtube will show you...
Mostly the music overlays? Tbh it was a good presentation apart from the Muzak.... If suggest it's entirely unnecessary given the subject matter, and best left off? You have a good subject (the n scale loco) and good commentary, so maybe less would be more? It was way too loud... 😉😉
The Y6B is still the winner on my layout on level track. My EM1 had a max pull of about 48 mixed freight cars which is really good, but my Y6B was able to pull 72 mixed freight cars at approximately 30 percent throttle.
72 cars in N scale is insane
For my Y6 I ran out of cars before I could find out, at 60 with no hesitation
The amount of detail they managed to put on this loco in N SCALE? Its just awesome. Also the sound quality sounds really good

Very nice Loco Bachmann is doing a nice job these days compared to 30 yrs ago.
Bachmann does make their em1’s strong , but you gotta remember how strong they were irl too!

The bridge scene is awesome

That is one empressive engine. The sound was very good and looks great on the layout. So glad you shared it with us.
GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
I've had my BACHMANN em1 more than 2 years it's on my channel in a video dam good loco great puller
You are such a sucker for big steam locos. This is nice!
My dcc EM-1 was able to haul all 55 MTL light and weighted mixed freight cars with no issue. Our club layout mind you has 3 seperate 2.3% grades. My only issue is going to try and speed match it with my BLI Y6B once BLI is done working on it.
I love my EM-1. Got mine from Midwest Model RR when they had them.

I can only imagine what Broadway could do with the EM1. And hope they do an EM1 down the line
that is really cool looking. I do have to ask though, any idea what's with the little yip before the full whistle is blown? you can hear it at 2:02
Hmmm. This was the default whistle that it came with, but I am pretty sure it has other whistles programmed. I'll have to check them.
I've been looking at getting one of them Yellowstones but I wanted to make sure it could pull good. Looks like it can so I think I know what locomotive I'll be getting next lol

I have 2 of them. Love them. Only problem is cab step’s fragile.

Beautiful. I watched the video and drooled..... and thought, how unlucky it is for me to only be in the USA. Balls. But Always Beautiful.
I got mine the day they came back in stock. Haven't been able to run it much but the things a gem and about half the cost i guess by looking at jt
A friend of mine has 4 in ho scale...big b&o fan....his father worked on those monsters too
Great review. Looks and sounds great. One question for you. Do you modify your KATO Switches as far as the frog is concerned? Thanks.
Sorry, Jimmy, but I just cannot believe your test. Either you have some very light cars, or you lucked out with the Y6b, and maybe EM-1.

I have both and the BLI mallet out pulls the em1 by at least 20 freight cars (all BLI).
I still can't figure out how it out pulls my BLI Big Boy
If I'm not mistaken, the mallett has four traction tires vs. the Big Boy's two.

Did you big boy come with an alternate pilot front for a coupler?
If BLI does a Yellowstone, I’m praying they offer it in the DM&IR (Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range) variant. I would be a happy camper.
The intro goes entirely too hard. I love it.
Have you ever tried to double head them?
I want to see an N scale Allegheny model. We have one here in Michigan in the Henry Ford museum
There are brass imports of it, but they’re very expensive
Really surprised how Bachmann much Bachmann has improved.
I like that loco a lot!
I have been very impressed with mine.
It cost me $750.00
That was $100.00 less than I was expecting to pay.
I want to get another one and try to modify it to an AC-9
Any suggestions for UK/Euro equivalents? Just getting back into N guage (scale now?) and sooo want to focus steam era this time round!
Britain has Beyer-Garratts and Germany has duplex-type locos.
They didnt do a pretty good job, this is a fantastic locomotive. If you enjoy big steam in N scale, get this locomotive. Its beautiful.
Do a tug of war between the two locomotives
You should jet bachmanns 2-8-0 something smaller
Not gonna lie I REALLY want a blue Y6B like that one but the cheapest I can find is like $480
Is that US or Canadian dollars?
My local N trak club had one of these. Big n impressive for N scale. Not my cup of tea, I do NG.
good vid on channel thanks lee
Do a tug of war!
Tug O War! Tug O War! 😂

Hi
Sadly, your sound levels were so wildly varied it made for a most unpleasant experience....🔊🔊🔊
Hmm. That’s weird. I do check my audio levels and balance for -6dB. May I ask what parts were loud?
