Went from Thrustmaster to Fanatec a while ago, but I'm still using the good ol' TH8A. I love that thing. The form, the haptics, the metal build - it's unbeatable for the price.

As good as i thought this shifter from Thrustmaster is, it does feel very well made and would take some stick, i eventually settled on the 3D printed shifter from SHH as it swaps between Sequential and H pattern modes a lot quicker and easier.

Had one of these back in 2016. Solid as a rock. Felt pretty good too. Then had two different Fanatec CS shifters. Felt like a step up from the TM. Typical Fanatec both failed. Finally I got a ProSim. I mostly drive H pattern cars these days so it makes sense as far as an investment.

There is a so called "Mod Cambio" available for 'improved feel' and quite affordable. Also it can be uses as a handbrake, Darin Gangi from ISR made a video about it and there are dozens of mods on Thingiverse as well. I don't like the Fanatec shifter because it's not working as a normal USB-device even with this 20 € 'Clubsport USB-Adapter' and can't count how often I had to un- and replug it to get recognized and how often I had to calibrate it. One of the most annoying devices I bought. I also miss-shift very often with this thing and needed a new spring after using it as sequential very soon after. The new SSH seems to be even better than both for less than 100€ plus shipping and some Alibaba-solutions doesn't look too bad either. So at least there are options nowadays and I would buy the SSH, but still very happy with my Frex, that feels mechanical and miss-shifts almost never happen.

Just printed a wheel-spacer for example that would've cost me 30 € plus shipping if buying it online. Would be out of Aluminium, but my print get's the job done just fine without any flex. I designed and printed dozens of parts for my rig and most I could not even buy. I've bought the Anycubic Vyper because it's almost idiot-proof and decent quality out of the box. An Ender 3 Pro does the same for half the price, just without auto-bed-leveling and two z-axis motors. Today I would buy the Prusa i3 MK2S+, basically the SimuCube 2 of the 3D-printer-market and most common printer in print-farms, but the new Ender 3 S1 Pro looks also awesome and more price-friendly.

    Great review!
One other thing that I may mention. Inside Sim Racing did a video on how to use this as an actual handbrake around 6 years ago. I do not have this shifter so I cannot verify, but it looks legitimate.
To summarize: you rotate the H pattern plate so 1 and 2 gears are to the front. Download the TH8A driver on your PC. From there, you can switch it into analog mode. This will allow you to pull the stick down the neutral lane to use as a handbrake.
Provides a bit of extra value if you only have one mounting location like on some of the tubular rigs. Really considering this strongly after discovering that. Cheers!

@KG, just me thinking, that the possible reason for the Thrustmaster wheel plugged with the TH8A direct would only have sequential gear pattern is that it over rides or utilities the same software program for gear up gear down pathway as the paddle shifters on the WB and as there are no button mapping pathway on the wheel for multiple gear choices programed on the WB this could explain why you had to connect the USB option of the TH8A to the PC or console direct to allow that function as that's what most of the games do any way. ??

I know Gosling is a major hardware guy. I would love to see him address the software side of things. The software for for Logitech g920 is a train wreck on windows 10. I had such a hard time with it, i finally had to uninstall the garbage software, just to get my wheel and pedals to work like they should on the games that I play. I would think that would factor in on people buying the hardware, and think he could save some people some hassles if he would warn them, hey for now, the software side of this or that wheel is garbage.

Just pull it apart and cut the tube to size so it slides over the adjacent metal teeth between the 5/6 & 7/R slots. When I want to use it as a 6 speed I just take it out and put a regular blocker in the 7th slot.
