I love it when Mandy Patinkin talks about Andre the Giant, he does it so sweetly and respectively, like they were the oldest of friends. And when he tells stories in general, he really does it captivatingly. RIP Andre.
I've always loved Andre the Giant. Every interview with him and every story of him exemplifies what a true gentleman he was. And he could drink us all into the grave.
He really was a Gentle Giant, I also read that when they were shooting on cold days, Robin Wright would complain that her head was cold. So Andre would put his hand on her head, to keep her warm.
I'm reading Cary's book, As You Wish. It's very clear from the behind-the-scenes interviews and more, that this group of folks cared for each other very much. I can only hope to be able to do what Rob Reiner was able to do with the cast.
Every person they interviewed in the behind the scene stories that are on the DvD talked about how much of a joy it was working with Andre. Truly remarkable cast/crew behind a wonderful movie.
This is immediately one of my favorite stories about Andre. He just seemed like such an incredible and genuine man, and this completely reinforces that.
As a kid I was a huge fan of Andre the Giant. For my 12th birthday my mom to me down to Cincinnati Gardens to watch Andre wrestle. A moment I will NEVER forget. This is when Andre was still in good health and I remember even at a young age how amazing it was to see up close a man of that size move around the ring with speed, agility, and power. A moment that will live on in my memory forever. RIP ANDRE YOU'RE TRULY THE GREATEST.
No!! Aww Andre can't die... I watched this film as a child, I watched it a thousand times over with my dad (who is now passed on), quotes etched into my brain at this point. This is my childhood movie. Poor Andre.
Because everybody, no matter how strong, how tough they are, wants to hear that someone will take care of them and protect them -- and be able to do it. It's that inner part of us that needs to be protected when we're hurting the most. I see your comment is 5 years old; I hope you're in a better place today and feeling safer and more protected. We all need to feel protected sometimes.
From my experience it's because we would accidentally hurt our friends by being too rough, especially in growing up. I certainly did that plenty of times and I felt so bad about it that I realized I needed to be more gentle with people.
I wonder if they’ll ever release a blooper reel with Andre letting out a giant fart during shooting of the scene where Westley comes back to life as Cary Elwes talked about in his book. Cracked me up tremendously when I read it.
Your comment is 8 years old, but I'll respond, anyway. I experienced the same thing. When _ER_ and _Chicago Hope_ played at the same time on competing networks, I was one of the few who preferred the latter. Even though I already loved _The Princess Bride_ , it took me forever to realize Inigo was played by the same guy who played a doctor on _Chicago Hope_ . Geez, it's been so long, I can't even remember Mandy's character's name. All I remember is his wife had drowned their child during a psychotic break. I remember him singing "And the Band Played On" to her (she was institutionalized) and crying my eyes out. I tried to find a place to stream that show, but it's just not available. _ER_ was always more popular because of George Clooney. I've never understood Clooney's appeal. I never thought he was particularly handsome or charming. I found Mandy's character more compelling. Maybe it was his singing voice?
R.I.P Andre, we will always remember you :) Sounds like he was a great guy, dude deserves every ounce of respect he gets If he was still with us you bet your ass I'd buy him a beer :)
I love this clip, and also read about it in Cary Elwes's book, as you wish. Everything about this movie is absolutely perfect. The only small glitch in this clip is that the Cliffs of insanity where the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, and not the Cliffs of Dover in England.
I never heard that story. That's so beautiful under. The giant loved his farm in Georgia because the animals wouldn't judge him. It was his sanctuary, his sanctum sanctuarum. What a loving man oh my
This is an incredibly sweet story. They really should have put a cam close to them, to capture that, and put it in the film. Having the Giant saying that and petting the Wally Shawn's character would have been classically funny, or at least incredibly pathetic, which would have been hysterical for that situation.
Wow... talk about a real life gentle giant. That right there is amazing. And to the one person who disliked this video: apparently you have no heart or soul in your body.
"He was a giant in so many ways" Indeed. Of all the things that were big about Andre, perhaps the biggest was his heart. Damn onion cutting ninjas. They sneak in when I least expect it. (snif)
I love the movie and those that starred in it but Mandy Patinkin is wrong @0:12 about filming the scenes of the Cliffs of insanity at the Cliffs of Dover, I'm from Dover and those are definitely not the white cliffs of Dover, but they are the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare Ireland.
Somewhat.. strange, but also cute and endearing. This was the oddest/best DVD extra I've ever seen of anything... Andre the Giant had to pet Wallace Shawn to calm him...
We have this guy at work. His name is Yuri. He is a former weightlifter from the Ukraine. He is not Russian--don't ever call a Ukrainian a Russian. He is 6ft and 300 lbs with arms bigger than my legs. He is built like one of those guys from "The World's Strongest Man" competitions. He has such a gentle disposition. For some reason a lot of big guys are like that.
9 years later, your comment made me remember something that happened to me in either Kindergarten or 1st grade. There was a large boy in my class named Troy. During recess one day, I fell and hurt myself and started crying. Troy was so big, he easily picked me up and carried me to the teacher. He was so nice to me. I'm reaching my mid-fifties, so the fact I'd remember this is pretty wild. The largest boy in the class was also the most empathetic.
Mortals, it's crucial that you get saved from the eternal fire of hell! We're sinners, and the effect of our sin is eternity in hell, but Jesus Christ loves us so much that he will save us when we trust him alone as savior. Jesus is true begotten son of God {Absolutely God and Man} who is totally sinless, and he sacrificed himself on the cross for our sins, {Each bad activity we do}, was buried, and was raised back to life from death. The second you believe in him alone, you will get eternal life and forgiveness of sins from him.
One man's sin is another's salvation. The world is not black and white, it is every shade of every color and non-color you can think of. Sin is what you say it is. I say, there is no sin, only action and reaction--or, consequence.

Well I wanted to cry tonight, for other reasons. But damn... What a beautiful man Andre was. Such a gentle giant. Mandy tells this tale so well too.
He really was a Gentle Giant, I also read that when they were shooting on cold days, Robin Wright would complain that her head was cold. So Andre would put his hand on her head, to keep her warm.
Robin Wright said that was actually true Andre was her personal head warmer

That was Andre for you. His heart was so huge, and he loved people so much. We lost a true jewel when he passed.
this made me cry... Andre must have been soooo incredibly sweet! Would LOVE to have met him!

lmao, well that would comfort me too
Andre sounds like a very sweet, humble and caring man. Rest in Peace Andre.
this movie was magic
An amazing man. An Amazing Movie. Just Magical. Brings me right back to my childhood when I watch this movie. It's truly a treasure.
No!! Aww Andre can't die... I watched this film as a child, I watched it a thousand times over with my dad (who is now passed on), quotes etched into my brain at this point. This is my childhood movie. Poor Andre.
ALL the feels.
This choked me up idk why???!!!

Not the cliffs of Dover, Cliffs of Moher (in Ireland). The Cliffs of Dover are white (as in the song)
The true definition of a gentle giant. The world misses you, Andre. Rest easy.
I searched for bloopers of this movie, WHY AM I GETTING FEELS?!
I met him at a WWF event when I was a kid.. He was amazingly nice and humble.
fascinating stuff after all these years
This movie... this movie is great for so many reasons and one of them is the actors. Damn, they're the best ppl

OMG I've seen this guy on t.v. for years now and I had absolutely no idea he was Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride!

Agent Gideon! I love Andre the Giant. He seemed like a Giant Sweetheart.
How could one not feel perfectly safe knowing that a fellow like Andre was looking out for you, and had your back?
R.I.P Andre, we will always remember you :)

@LiveOkie Good point. A keg it is! :)

He was a giant in so many ways.
Aw geez I actually choked up! How sweey!
Andre man…I swear. Heart of diamonds! 😢
That brings tears.
0 people disliked this video, that shows how much respect people have for andre the giant.
love this movie!!

That one person who disliked this video (how dare they) has never known a gentle giant like the rest of us!
Wow! That's a really cool story about Andre! :D
Wow. That was really nice.
That was....really cool.

those who are looking for bloopers of the movie, the whole movie is a series of bloopers.
Cliffs of Mohr, West coast, Southern Ireland.
Mandy misspoke....they filmed at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland with a stunt double, not the Cliffs of Dover (which are white).
Somewhat.. strange, but also cute and endearing. This was the oddest/best DVD extra I've ever seen of anything... Andre the Giant had to pet Wallace Shawn to calm him...
I am a massive fan of the princess bride...If me & the mr get married...i may do a princess bride theme...as you wish x

I NEVER KNEW GIDEON WAS INDIGO!!!!!!!!
where can i get this dvd with these stories?
Totally
Who could be scared with Andre the Giant telling you he will take care of you?
They are like that because they don't feel they have to prove themselves to anyone.
Andre the Angel ❤️
Andre was a real life Shrek.
Gideon!
That's pretty cool. :)
He believed him because it was true🥺
I would trust him as well.
Cool story, Bro.
I miss Andre.
Aww. :')
Ermahgerd... THE FEELS!
@guyfihi The reason is that it is completely illogical to stereotype a person based on their appearance.
Andre the Giant.... A Big Big Man.
Just shows the true man was
A-Who names his boy MANDY?
B-The guy from Dead Like Me portrayed Intigo Montoya?
His given name is Mandel. It means "almond" in Yiddish, which isn't terribly exciting, but it is legitimately a name.
@@johndybala8580 considering that i wrote that comment 12 years ago (when i was 14), i do now know that Mandy is short for Mandel. But thanks
@@Netalula0707 (facepalm) I really should have checked the date on this. Mea culpa.
Sounds like Andrea was an angel
Uh oh! Do I smell soiled baby diapers?
@oldschool6804
Everyone is an asshole at times. Can't be in a good mood all the time.
6ft isn't that tall xD Andre was 7'7"
:)
TIL Mandy can be a man's name.
Manny, not Mandy
Talking Walrus No, actually it is Mandy, not Manny. .
UpRoaryus You think you're so clever with your FACTS.
Talking Walrus Unfortunately Facts are Facts, It is Mandy. However the name Carey can also be a girls name.
Thats creepy.

amen.
If Moses had come down from the mountain in the 2000's, he'd've brought an extra commandment with him: Thou shalt not spam.
***** wow... dude. i think u found the perfect solution
Seems legit.

Lovely story, total bullshit but lovely story Mandy
