Really impressive to see these sets come together like this! Really a childhood dream. Also, when it comes to the "Red Planet Defender" mech, I've always thought that perhaps it was some kind of mobile, walking anti-air platform. It would make sense given the fact that the humans had a lot more ships than the Martians.
Yeah, that's a perfect way to describe the form-factor of that one. I always thought the arms being like that were more fitting than traditional arms but I couldn't figure out why.
your passion for these sets are clearly noticable! as for someone like me who had several of the life on mars sets as a kid i can definately understand your notalgia and excitement! if you had the aero tube hangar set back in the day you were a boss!! really enjoyed the video, definately brought some childhood memories!! :)
Life on Mars is one of my favorite themes. I had every set plus the Quaker Oats set when I was 8. Finally recollected all of them at 28. So many things I love about this theme. Great video! I learned a few things I didn't know before
This theme is definitely underrated. Wish we could have seen more of it of course, but even with the one wave I feel we got a really well-rounded bunch of sets.
Your joy for these sets is infectious! When I was a kid, I actually won a small call-in contest on Cartoon Network for some Mars Missions sets, including the awesome drop ship! It's cool to see where the alien tubes and pods originated. Love your content-it is so wholesome and well produced! Keep up the awesome work.
I get it man. I had all of those sets and loved them more than any other, In particular, the Red Mech. I'd spends countless hours in my room playing with them all. Now that I think of it, I think I still have those sets in a bin, somewhere in my closet, so I should probably bring them out again, 20 years later!. It always brightens my day, when building a modern set, and it has one of the martian minifig arms in some way.
You'll have to get that bin out! Building these back was such a nostalgia trip. Recon Mech RP has gotta be the quintessential classic LEGO mech. Solid build with really cool parts
Hey I saw you on Lego Masters! Life on Mars is definitely Lego history at its finest. I personally grew up with Rock Raiders and that PC RTS game. What are your thoughts on that theme? The discontinued turqoise featured there has finally returned!
Hey! I just missed out on Rock Raiders, unfortunately, but I love love love the colors and concept. My all time favorite LEGO in-house theme is Power Miners, which of course was heavily inspired by Rock Raiders! I do hope I can get my hands on some sets though and review them here some day.
This is an old video, but it actually came up very handy. About a month or two ago I took over an old Lego collection from a dear friend's brother. They hadn't done anything with it basically since childhood and having heard I was back into lego again, they gave it to me, instead of taking it to a thrift shop, or throwing it away. I warned them that even old used lego is worth a lot these days, but they didn't care and just wanted me to have it. When I got it, there were a lot of werid pieces and odd figures that I have never seen anywhere. When I finally sorted all the parts I was left with those werid pieces, that almost didn't look like Lego and I was almost tempted to throw it away. I'm so glad I didn't, as it turns out that person basically had this entire collection, judging from what I've so far been able to identify. There are a couple of pieces missing for sure, but all the large tubes and connective pieces, including the pump .. it is very recognisable. While I am not a fan of the set in particular, nor did I do anything with Lego at that particular time, I am going to see if I can sort out all the parts for the individual sets, as all the Alien figures (minus a few arms) are all here. I have no idea if I want to hold on to the set for long, but my thinking is that somebody that really likes this, should have it eventually. This is my second watch of the video, because I tried to figure out how the minifigs were supposed to be built and which sets they belong to. The first watch prevented me throwing it away and made me realize I had something fun in my hands that should be put together again. So thanks for both of them I guess!
Love to hear this one came in handy! It's a crazy theme, with so many rare colors and pieces. There's definitely nothing else like it, so I can totally see where many people have probably overlooked it altogether!
Come on Caleb. Every one of these Vintage sets that you vlog about is your favorite set. But that's okay, because Classic Lego is just so special. Although, these sets had (have) amazing playability. And as far as cost is concerned, you could get a LOT of Lego for about the cost of today's Assembly Square. Not a bad bargain I think.
There's too much not to love! I think Mars Mission nails a lot of the aesthetics with some really great looking and unique vehicles, but Life on Mars knocks it out of the park with the functionality. They can all be my favorite, right???
I started Lego Life on Mars with the T3 Trike vehicule, later I got 7311 and 7313 those 3 were the only ones I could get at that time (I was 10-11 at that time) but God I love them they were unique on their own. Sadly I lost most of their pieces while moving to the new house at that time... The good thing is that after watching Lego Rewind special and also that my Lego nostalgia kicked in, I started to collect them again and I started with the big boy the 7316 sealed and the 7311 special bundle all sealed thankfully, and I am hoping to get the mechs also very soon. Thanks for this video is being great to see all together!
The red mech is one of my all time favorite sets ever, partly for nostalgia. But even today it still holds up as a dope mech. I have this memory imprinted in my mind from childhood of building the red mech, running up the stairs in my house so excited to show my dad the completed build, only to trip on the last step and shatter the set right in front of my dad and his friend...
It looks quite good indeed. Not exactly the style I would build, but the color scheme is quite good and it has some decent movement. I hope you could put the set together quickly enough :)
Love the collection. Many of the sand red parts were only in the one mech. I had a chance to grab the set with the tubes in a bilk lot and passed. I should've grabbed it. Great video.
2 years late on the video but I actually picked up an Aero Tube Hangar from a local toy con. Used for $80. Everything was still there including the original print advertisement for the year 2001 sets. A lot of memories in the set and ads. Love it!
I’m working on completing the full Rock raiders theme, and Life on mars is next on the list. I had the two mechs as a kid as well as the tri-wheel human vehicle Also you are right about the cruiser hopping along as his way of movement, you can see it in the Mars area of LEGO racers 2
Awesome video! I love Life and Mars and have got the similar collection. The aero tubes are very fun to play with - sadly I bought them being an adult, they would be cooler for a child. And I didn't know that the hangar was updated - I was lucky to have the newer version. Martians still occasionally get stuck in tubes, but rarely.
i still have the docking station i loved this theme as a kid! funny how now were on the verge of sending a maned ship to mars lol. oh and to make the pods slide faster i used pledge and that made them move better.
this is genuinely such a wholesome video, not enough love goes to Life on Mars and seeing itso up close and intimate spoken about with such reverence warmed my dumb little heart~ i would love to see a another mega review looking over the human sets, and just more of these retrospectives all together, you have a super comfy vibe and make loving lego feel so much more 'homey' if that makes sense? XD 100/10 never stop being your amazing self!
When I was a kid, our grandma took us to a garage sale and bought us a plastic bag of LEGOs, they were scattered life on mars sets, incomplete sets of the aero tube, (we had the arch ways, part of the scorpion set, and parts of the cyber saucer and celestial stinger sets (notably the battery powered "cannon"). It's great to see what the sets actually used to be!
Great video! I only have Excavation Searcher and the human tricycle, but I have a certain fondness for this theme - even if it was peak early-2000s Lego jank. I bought ES on sale to use as a Star Wars walker, but I don't recall if I ever really did. I also never realised the air tubes aren't just circular, that's interesting.
I'd love to know more about the actual design process for the tube system. It's so intricate and absolutely fascinating. The parts designers for the company are undoubtedly brilliant.
Oh yeah this one is brilliant. I got some replacement parts and extra aliens. Most have actually sold out, it's hard to get more than one or two from a Bricklink store now. They're getting snagged up. I have a Mars Moc planned if I ever have own a house with space to waste. But not with brickbuilt terrain. Just dark orange sand as a base. For now, like most people, all that Mars stuff is in a box in a corner.
This is great! I always wanted the whole set, but we were low on money so I was happy to just have the red mech, and then dream about owning the rest while looking at pictures. Thank you for this, now I know what it would have been like. Also, you're one half of my favorite Lego Masters team!
I love this line, and wish Lego would explore more lines like this, so many themes are a battle in a box theme that it’s rare we get sets of 2 factions working together for a common goal. And I think that makes this unique and beautiful
The crystals inside the boulders are called "bodium", and if I remember correctly from the Lego Magazine story, it was not only the power source for their vehicles but also the life source of the Martians themselves. There was also a band of "evil" rebel Martians who lived off in a valley, but didn't have any sets based off them.
Man this really inspired me to pick up a few life on mars sets from bricklink! 3:47 it's funny you mention this, all of these sets appear in the very beloved Lego Racers 2 game and the so called "cruiser" does indeed bounce around like a grasshopper in the game! such an awesome collection and a great video giving us some info on some of my favorite sets from my favorite era of Lego.
@@CheeseyStudios Yeah after watching this a few weeks ago I picked up the red planet protector and the cruiser set, I really want to eventually have them all, Life on Mars, Arctic, and adventurers are top of my radar for sure. I just am super nostalgic for Lego Racers 2. Do you have a discord channel?
Oh nice! Adventurers is one I've been working on collecting more of too. I don't have a Discord channel yet, but I have certainly thought about it! I feel it could be a great deal of fun, and certainly easier to communicate with people rather than the comment section haha
What’s cool to me is how these sets straddle modern and vintage Lego. The odd minifig design if evocative of earlier Lego but the box design and printing is more modern while the parts used settle somewhere in between. The use of colors that where basically exclusive to Life on Mars is also a more vintage concept.
Hey! It's the guy from Lego Masters that looks like Ricky Montgomery! Really cool looking through the comments and seeing that you reply to every one of them. Just found your channel and wish you the best!
Man, what a juicy nostalgia video. Thanks for doing this theme justice! I'm wondering- your tubes near the back look much lighter than the ones near the hangars- is that a lighting thing, or are they actually different colors? I got the later version and the tube colors are totally uniform.
I was very confused by that as well. They are actually different colors. I'm not sure if one was exposed to sunlight for awhile perhaps or there could be actual variations in the batches produced at LEGO, too. If I ever see another full kit in person, it's something I'll be looking for! It's so weird
The kit normally comes with all tubes the same color. I have no explanation for why yours are different colors (aside from sun exposure as you said), but my kit has all tubes the same color.
My friend Nick had the whole set and I was so jealous of him, I would go to his house and set all of this up to play with it for hours. My favorite was the excavator, I wanted that set so badly that I tried to recreate it (poorly) with parts I had regardless of the horrid colors. This is the era Lego I have the most nostalgia for.
Loved your vid! I actually have the blue and red mechs. Was gonna get the brown one together with an Insectoids set. I remember when I was a kid, I saw the image of the Aero Tube Hangar and wasn't so sure what to think of it. A friend had it for a while and he explained to me how it mostly didn't work; only one tube worked but by placing the minifig right by the end and another tube had a "little car." I was so disapointed that decided not to even beg my parents for it. Your review really made me think twice and ponder on it. Maybe my friend screwed up the build or didn't know how to describe things? Anyways, I'll try to get it on BL soon...
I do hope you can get your hands on it! So long as you have the 3x4 tube connectors rather than the 2x4, it works pretty well. Certainly not perfect, but nonetheless enjoyable in my opinion. There's just nothing quite like this set! What Insectoids set are you getting? I just purchased Planetary Prawler which is a really neat kit too.
@@CheeseyStudios, yes, I think the one with the cheapest posting option is the "new" version of the set. Weird! The Planetary Prowler is exactly the next one I'm getting! I was thinking of getting it together with Life on Mars' Excavation Searcher. Just a few days ago, I made two purchases with the Insectoids' Bi-wing Blaster, Sonic Stinger and UFO's Interstellar Starfigher, Cyber Blaster, Cyborg Scout, Cyber Saucer and Warp Winfighter. It'll take them a couple of weeks to get to me, but I'm so exited!
oh MAN, this was a lego set I had as a kid and I ADORE IT, I really wanna see if I still have all the pieces, but I never got the side sets, and they're SO GOOD. I should gather these up too
Jeez, about that box- I used to have one of these remote controlled lego cars, the oooold ones that had the basically controlled car base with a bunch of studs on top. It's box was similarly as massive as the one you have for that Hangar. I had a bunch of legos stored inside of it later.
growing up i had so many of these parts and always wondered where they came from since i got them from a family friend, wish i had been able to see them in the completed state.
I was a little too young to catch the Life on Mars sets but one day my dad surprised me with a used box he found on ebay and I had the entire aero tube hanger
I have the tube hanger in the mail as we speak! Found it on ebay, complete, I already own the 3 other sets to complete all of it, great job on lego masters by the way! Knew you looked familiar! Also I'm glad I watched this as I had no idea about that tube part update! I'll be looking to see if what I purchased has the update or not!
I won a contest in the Canadian Lego Magazine back in the say, whatever i sent a picture in of inspired the mag to design "the Biodium Bug". Got the four legged walker as part of my prize!
Interestingly, there actually was an antagonist to Life on Mars. Arcturus, the red-eyed alien, was a saboteur planning on staging an uprising against Reigel.
Damn was young me jealous of my friend who had the big aero tube hangar. Me and my sister together had most of the mechs and we loved to play with them. All the aliens having so much character definitely helped with that.
The Martians were so cool! They had the most interesting colors. But that's just kind of the story of the whole theme I suppose! Cool sandy colors everywhere 😂
It's unfortunate you don't have the boxes for or booklets for them. I definitely recommend checking them out online. They provide a lot of indication on the modularity. I only had the Blue and Red mechs and the hopper. The blue one was by far the most play value as the hip thrusters could be used to replace the arms, and taking on Leg and plugging it at the back made for a really nice looking flight vehicle. The combination of the Red and Blue mechs is also quite impressive as you can make a pretty robust Quad miner, PLUS the flight vehicle. Wished I could get my hands on that Mining vehicle at least as well. Damn such a good series, but also hard to find.
Fun play feature you missed with the sand coloured walker. You can use the tail while it is docked to unload the rocks onto the hoses and they roll down into the bucket
I remember this series so clearly, I had the red one and I still have the head piece to that alien, somehow it managed to survive 20+ years of moves and play time.
Your review for Mars mission just came up in my feed and I wondered immediately if you looked into life on Mars. I always saw the advertisement for this in one of my sets growing up as a kid. But by the time I had gotten really into legos these were already discontinued unfortunately
@@CheeseyStudios probably my favorite along side alpha team, knights kingdom, 08 castle and space police 3. All being similarly short but extremely creative
As far as the sand purple flying vehicle in the Aero Tube Hanger, my second hand set came with 2 of the black chainsaw/crossbow handle piece and I put them on both sides which then meet across the Minifigure and it gives that extra stability.
I very much want to get one or two more incomplete aerotube hangers and make a larger hub with pod storage or something... i have had fun linking the mars mission base to the hanger though!
@@CheeseyStudios just so you know, the dock for the excavation searcher can be connected straight to the main body of the base or to the umbrella modules.
I got hand me down legos from my cousins and i remember getting some parts from this theme and others and not knowing if they were real , especially the aliens . Now i know so many years later
Now I understand, why this theme didn't feel like the peak of fancy pieces to me: While I have 5 of the 8 main sets, I am exactly missing those with the sand red and sand purple pieces. Now a 7316 is on it's way to fix that experience. Makes 41 different pieces I didn't have before… wow.
What is your experience with the minifigure arms for martians? Mines are breaking a lot at the connection point at the shoulders, and I am treating them super well. Not even playing with them just keeping them displayed behind the glass... Am I the only one? :/
I always viewed mars mission as earth finding out their friends the martians were attacked by the alien invaders, and sent an army to save them. As the martians helped the friendly astronauts so of course earth would want to help their allies.
I adored the Life on Mars sets back in the day. I think Lego should bring back a similar concept, one with no firmly-defined bad guys. The other Space sets before did this well, in that any of them could be the antagonists to another set, but also could be the good guys. The UFO sets looked frightening, but were they villains or just scary? This gives children the opportunity to tell their own stories and have as much conflict or as little as they want. Perhaps everything goes well and it’s a story of exploration and diplomacy. Or maybe the humans and Martians enter open warfare.
I look up anything basically that feels uncommon. I've seen a lot of LEGO sets in my life and have a pretty good handle on it, but it's still a lot of a research! Very much something I enjoy doing though.
@@CheeseyStudios I found my missing bucket of Lego today, and I have one of these! It was the double hover. It was the only piece of the line available at my local Zellers.
So glad I could finally get this up! This video was definitely my longest and perhaps most difficult to make. So much to capture, so much to talk about! Definitely going to be doing some 'easier' content through Christmastime 😂
Set 7313 I first learned of this as Riegel’s mech in Lego Racers 2 which is the fastest vehicle to race against or at play as (creds to Kajeuter) except Boost powerup in the story

So glad you enjoyed, and happy I could bring back some good memories for ya too :)
@Cheesey Studios have you done similar reviews sets for the human sets as well?? Would love to check those out as well if so!!
Not yet, but hoping to one of these days! I've got a pretty impressive backlog of 'Revisiting' videos waiting to be made 🤣
ive never seen this before, its obvious that lego really had a thing for mars and its exploration. i love alllll mars mission related themes
I loved their own creative takes on Mars too! They gave us some drastically different stories and aesthetics
these vintage set reviews are great lol, please do more
It's my favorite thing to do! I've got at least two sets to do, plus an entire theme! So lots more to come :)
Quaker Oats set? What Quaker Oats set?
Your joy for these sets is infectious! When I was a kid, I actually won a small call-in contest on Cartoon Network for some Mars Missions sets, including the awesome drop ship! It's cool to see where the alien tubes and pods originated. Love your content-it is so wholesome and well produced! Keep up the awesome work.
Really appreciate it, thank you! So glad you had the dropship too - that's a truly epic one.
it brings me so much joy seeing a grown man smiling while playing with a lego set, i wish i was financially stable enough to live like this
I get it man.
I'm in the process of collecting the entire lineup, polybags and all, minus the extra pieces set currently. Absolutely my #1 favorite Lego theme ever.
That's wild! Best of luck collecting!
Check out for the Rock Raiders RTS fan-remake "Manic Miners" if you are unaware of it.
That might be the coolest gimmick I've seen in ages. I could see a Bionicle fan recreating the Le-Metru chute system with the tube parts.
The tubes are so epic. I have seen them in a few MOCs in the past!
Best of luck getting the rest! It's so cool that you've got some sealed copies
If a chance comes by again, be sure to pick it up! I don't think you'll regret it.
Always loved this theme and the awesome parts and colors it came with. Shame I wasn’t alive when it came out🤪
Thank goodness for Bricklink - how would we survive without it???
2 years late on the video but I actually picked up an Aero Tube Hangar from a local toy con. Used for $80. Everything was still there including the original print advertisement for the year 2001 sets. A lot of memories in the set and ads. Love it!
$80 for a complete copy? BIG win! So glad you have it!
@@CheeseyStudios thank you man!
There aren't many up in the EU sellers on Bricklink, I think you did great for $80 for sure.
This is such an underrated series thank you for showing your love for this series awesome contact keep going strong.
Thank you! Lots more to come :D
I’m working on completing the full Rock raiders theme, and Life on mars is next on the list. I had the two mechs as a kid as well as the tri-wheel human vehicle
Also you are right about the cruiser hopping along as his way of movement, you can see it in the Mars area of LEGO racers 2
This makes me want to rebuild my Space Explorer and T3 trike sets! Was always one of my favorite themes growing up
I still need to get my astronaut builds back together too. Such a great theme!
i still have the docking station i loved this theme as a kid! funny how now were on the verge of sending a maned ship to mars lol. oh and to make the pods slide faster i used pledge and that made them move better.
Elon Musk is gonna find Vega on Mars, I just know it
@@CheeseyStudios indeed! :P actually if i was going to mars i take that lego set and set it up on the ground take a picture of it lol.
@@fruitsnackia2012 That would be great for this video's thumbnail, ha!
@@CheeseyStudios lol agreed :P
this is genuinely such a wholesome video, not enough love goes to Life on Mars and seeing itso up close and intimate spoken about with such reverence warmed my dumb little heart~ i would love to see a another mega review looking over the human sets, and just more of these retrospectives all together, you have a super comfy vibe and make loving lego feel so much more 'homey' if that makes sense? XD 100/10 never stop being your amazing self!
Really appreciate it! I do need to get those human sets back together. I've got all the pieces somewhere!
I still have most of the life on Mars line in a tub in my spare room. It was such a neat part of my childhood.
Lots of good memories with this theme too. Glad to hear you've still got the parts!
That's such a fun selection of parts! I miss finding more stuff like this at sales.
I remember this one. A fantastic set full of playability.
Indeed! Love it
Great video!
That's awesome! I really hope you're able to do the MOC one day - I'm not sure if I've seen any LoM MOCs, but it sure sounds awesome.
This is great! I always wanted the whole set, but we were low on money so I was happy to just have the red mech, and then dream about owning the rest while looking at pictures.
Thank you for this, now I know what it would have been like.
Also, you're one half of my favorite Lego Masters team!
Glad you liked the video, and thank you
My grandpa mailed me some of these sets for my birthday. I'll always remember :)
That's so awesome
I love this line, and wish Lego would explore more lines like this, so many themes are a battle in a box theme that it’s rare we get sets of 2 factions working together for a common goal. And I think that makes this unique and beautiful
The crystals inside the boulders are called "bodium", and if I remember correctly from the Lego Magazine story, it was not only the power source for their vehicles but also the life source of the Martians themselves. There was also a band of "evil" rebel Martians who lived off in a valley, but didn't have any sets based off them.
This the first time I'm hearing of evil Martians 👀
Man this really inspired me to pick up a few life on mars sets from bricklink! 3:47 it's funny you mention this, all of these sets appear in the very beloved Lego Racers 2 game and the so called "cruiser" does indeed bounce around like a grasshopper in the game! such an awesome collection and a great video giving us some info on some of my favorite sets from my favorite era of Lego.
Ayy! Which sets are you picking up? They're all so great. I'm glad to know that it appears to be canon that it's a hopper!
3:48 you are absolutely right! this set is featured in lego racers 2 where it hops around, as an obstacle for racers to avoid.
What’s cool to me is how these sets straddle modern and vintage Lego. The odd minifig design if evocative of earlier Lego but the box design and printing is more modern while the parts used settle somewhere in between. The use of colors that where basically exclusive to Life on Mars is also a more vintage concept.
This definitely did serve as a bridge between two very different eras!
Videos like these fuel my old Lego set addiction
Ha! Mine too. I'm a sucker for this older stuff!
Dude I love your channel I’m so glad I found it
Glad you found it too!
This is definitely on of my favorite vintage Lego themes.
I know, right? This one was so much fun, and so unique too!
Something i loved to do as a kid was to use the "base side extensions" as backpacks for the red mech to use as mobile bases for expeditions :)
That's a fun idea! Love it!
Sand purple and Sand red, you will be forever missed! 😭💕
Forever in our hearts ❤
I had the accessories pack as a kid with no other knowledge of the theme. The sled completely baffled me 😂
That is wild lol! Yeah, I can't even imagine having no context for the sled - is there literally a single connection point on it? xD
That was really nostalgic, I would like to see a harry potter video in this style perhaps of the 2010 or the older sets or even the new ones
Definitely! I would love to do something like that too. I have to do something really special for the 2004 wave - my favorite Harry Potter wave ever!
Lots of nostalgia!
This theme was a great one. Rebuilding these sets certainly took me back too!
Hey! It's the guy from Lego Masters that looks like Ricky Montgomery! Really cool looking through the comments and seeing that you reply to every one of them. Just found your channel and wish you the best!
Ayyy, that's me! Thank you
Man, what a juicy nostalgia video.
So cool to see the models, I remeber seeing these in Lego Racers 2 and being disappointed i couldnt get them 😅
My friend Nick had the whole set and I was so jealous of him, I would go to his house and set all of this up to play with it for hours. My favorite was the excavator, I wanted that set so badly that I tried to recreate it (poorly) with parts I had regardless of the horrid colors. This is the era Lego I have the most nostalgia for.
LEGO was just so bold and creative during this time!
I bought several kid's old collections of lego from garage sales and her in france at least, the red mech seems to be VERY popular
Wish I knew about these sets.. they look pretty cool.
Such a short lived theme! It certainly flew under the radar with it's one year existence.
Thank you for showing me some cool older sets, I enjoy learning new things about Lego
oh MAN, this was a lego set I had as a kid and I ADORE IT, I really wanna see if I still have all the pieces, but I never got the side sets, and they're SO GOOD. I should gather these up too
Do it! It's so much fun to mess around with
Oh my god. I remember these. These were better than the star wars set "at the time"
These sets did generally look quite good for their time!
Jeez, about that box- I used to have one of these remote controlled lego cars, the oooold ones that had the basically controlled car base with a bunch of studs on top.
It's box was similarly as massive as the one you have for that Hangar.
I had a bunch of legos stored inside of it later.
Those big boxes sure do come in handy!
growing up i had so many of these parts and always wondered where they came from since i got them from a family friend, wish i had been able to see them in the completed state.
I was a little too young to catch the Life on Mars sets but one day my dad surprised me with a used box he found on ebay and I had the entire aero tube hanger
That's so epic! Used lots can have absolute gold in them.
I miss sand red and sand purple. Beautiful colours.
Indeed. I hope they make a return one day...
I won a contest in the Canadian Lego Magazine back in the say, whatever i sent a picture in of inspired the mag to design "the Biodium Bug". Got the four legged walker as part of my prize!
Sweet! I always loved entering those LEGO contests
I got the excavation searcher for $30 because of your review last year
Yo! That's a pretty sweet deal
Interestingly, there actually was an antagonist to Life on Mars. Arcturus, the red-eyed alien, was a saboteur planning on staging an uprising against Reigel.
👀👀👀
Brings me back
Good times...
Elegant review about wholesome theme:)
Love this one - wholesome is a great word for it!
Fun fact: In the instructions, the red and blue robots separate so that they can be recombined into an outstretched, "Superman" flying arrangement.
That's pretty epic. Love the combining feature of this theme
Fun play feature you missed with the sand coloured walker. You can use the tail while it is docked to unload the rocks onto the hoses and they roll down into the bucket
Oh! That's what those tubes were for!
lego sets used to be more expensive indeed, but the parts had better, more sturdy plastic and used more paint to color the parts. So it makes sense.
I remember this series so clearly, I had the red one and I still have the head piece to that alien, somehow it managed to survive 20+ years of moves and play time.
I'm sure happy to hear that! I know those clips used on the Martians could be fragile too
Your review for Mars mission just came up in my feed and I wondered immediately if you looked into life on Mars. I always saw the advertisement for this in one of my sets growing up as a kid. But by the time I had gotten really into legos these were already discontinued unfortunately
Such a short-lived themes, but I love how wholesome and creative it is. Definitely underrated in my opinion!
@@CheeseyStudios probably my favorite along side alpha team, knights kingdom, 08 castle and space police 3. All being similarly short but extremely creative
Ah, Knights Kingdom! I'll definitely cover that in a future video too. Love that one. My first ever LEGO theme!
@@CheeseyStudios I'll be looking forward to the main castle review
As far as the sand purple flying vehicle in the Aero Tube Hanger, my second hand set came with 2 of the black chainsaw/crossbow handle piece and I put them on both sides which then meet across the Minifigure and it gives that extra stability.
That's smart!
I very much want to get one or two more incomplete aerotube hangers and make a larger hub with pod storage or something... i have had fun linking the mars mission base to the hanger though!
The things you could do with a bunch of tubes and pumps like these. That could lead to some pretty wild and epic layouts
@@CheeseyStudios just so you know, the dock for the excavation searcher can be connected straight to the main body of the base or to the umbrella modules.
True! There was such a good modular system for this theme. Love the customization
@@CheeseyStudios agreed! This series and lego galaxy squad are some of the greatest series in my opinion!
I got hand me down legos from my cousins and i remember getting some parts from this theme and others and not knowing if they were real , especially the aliens . Now i know so many years later
LEGO made some weiiirddd stuff in this era for sure - I know I've gotten rid of LEGO that I thought was something else too RIP
They should do this again for any other sci fi themes they do in the future but with a motorized pump.
That would be pretty wild!
I recommend playing Lego Racers 2 to see all the sets working together if you havent already
Yeah, some sets here are an absolute gold mine for crazy parts. I love it!
Yep. This set also features a lot of old brown, which is always a save bet for rare colors.
What is your experience with the minifigure arms for martians? Mines are breaking a lot at the connection point at the shoulders, and I am treating them super well. Not even playing with them just keeping them displayed behind the glass... Am I the only one? :/
I think I have had one or two break too. Unfortunately it's a pretty common problem. I think RR Slugger even did a whole video on the situation!
I always viewed mars mission as earth finding out their friends the martians were attacked by the alien invaders, and sent an army to save them.
As the martians helped the friendly astronauts so of course earth would want to help their allies.
One day I hope to see a return to Legos in house space theme. He'll maybe a updated life on mars theme with modern building techniques and parts
I'd love to see a Mars theme return. I've loved both this one and Mars Mission so much
I adored the Life on Mars sets back in the day.
I do like the concept a lot too. It's so much more opened ended and imaginative!
How do you know which prices are exclusive and in what color ?? Do you look up ever noncommon part?
I look up anything basically that feels uncommon. I've seen a lot of LEGO sets in my life and have a pretty good handle on it, but it's still a lot of a research! Very much something I enjoy doing though.
I remember the blue mech being a pain in the behind in Lego racers 2
That accessories pack would have matched my underwater explorers (yellow sub, chrome dag,) mostly very well.
Those packs were so cool. I suppose their kind of similar to the Xtra and VIP add-ons they do today!
@@CheeseyStudios I found my missing bucket of Lego today, and I have one of these! It was the double hover. It was the only piece of the line available at my local Zellers.
Yes! A Cheesey upload!!!
That was in Racers? So cool!
I now know why my set always had the little pod get stuck in the middle.
It was such a weird oversight on LEGO's part!
