baltimore swagga , hey, you can get a 50mm Canon Prime lens for around $100, but it's cheaply made & very noisy. The best way to go is Vintage Lenses. You can get them Very cheap on eBay & they are just as good if not better than the expensive lenses out there. You will need adapters for certain lenses from r them to fit your camera ( only about $15 on Amazon ) One I highly suggest is the 58mm Helios Lens, it's a f1.4 which mean you can shoot in low light, it's very cheap & a Very good lens. Vintage Lenses are all manual focus lenses but that is better for video anyway, the lenses with motors in them make noise & don't do a good job at focusing from one point to another, and there are Many of these Vintage Lenses that are great for Photo & Cinema at prices anyone can afford $100 & less while the L-Series Glass from Canon will cost from $1000 to over $2000 & up. All you need is to practice shooting in manual focus. Another tip is Magic Lantern, look it up on RUclips,, it is Amazing !! It's like having a Menu that the most expensive cameras don't have, HIGHLY SUGGEST IT !! Hope this helped some, let me know if you have any questions.
John Sides I honor ur info and wish more people in the comments help like you do, question ? where do I buy the lantern cause I checked every store where I live , how much does it cost , and how would I know how to install it the proper way without damaging anything , and if I get lantern do I need lens, hope all answers get answerd.
So cool. Old video, still 150% relevant. When I did macro/insect photography back in the day, people always used to say "you must have an expensive camera!" - completely negating the hard work, knee-grinding, face in the dirt, lens scratching, sunburning effort that goes into getting under a shrub, and waiting for a bee to fly past at the right distance and time. It's about light, and only light. Light is what film and photo is made of, and using it as paint is the end goal. Your videos are insightful and inspiring simon. Many thanks.

It's funny and ironic. Spend as little on the camera as possible. It is the lighting and the lens that makes the most difference. the best camera today will be worthless in a short time but good glass is forever. For example the Trailer and the shot of the director with the lights behind him were both shot on the NEX 5r. Check them out on our Kickstarter page.

DIYCameraGuy a short film.
+Pharaoh Knighton i'd say the t3i - only because it has a rotating screen, which I find myself using all the time.
Wondering how you achieve the handwritten font. Do you write it yourself or is it an actual font? Love it.
here's how: ruclips.net/video/2Aqk8OaIyXg/видео.html
So so excellent! I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this channel. You're work is great. Many thanks.

Damn dude, such an informative video. The passion you have for film is incredibly obvious in the way you structure your videos. Keep up the good work!
I love the tones you use on your videos! I have no idea how to edit both photos and videos yet but I'll follow your videos when I get my entry-level DSLR to try editing. Thanks for putting on these videos which are really helpful for a beginner like me.
very nice God bless

Hey buddy love the cinematics getting a t5 soon and btw what is the font called I love it
So... Are you now using the T5i (700D)?
no. not yet. Although an upgrade wouldn't be bad for him.
He made a vid about how he doesn't want to upgrade
tbh wish he did... he has already got the experience but im sorta rooting him to upgrade to something like a 70d or t6s
I like it, it gives me a lot of strength knowing that i don't need a better camera, and the difference in quality is a fraction worse.
I honestly think he shouldn't. The T3i is not that obsolete, and it gives his low-budget fans some hope that new technology doesn't necessarily make a film better.
Now, I believe that skills is more important rather than an expensive equipment. thanks i found your video. another gem to learn.
Truly wonderful. Best filmmaking tutorial I've seen in years...
I really love these videos but this guy makes me hyperventilate because of his random and constant pauses between words in a sentence.
Step 1: Buy a 1237347$ camera
The canon t3i isn't even that expensive it's like 500 dollars new and 300 used lol.
Normal stuff like getting splashed with water, getting slapped or having someone put a knife against your trought.
We all know what that feels like....
Simon = Total Ghetto
Was just looking to buy a Canon T6i when I stumbled across this video, and man did I learned so much more than I bargained for... Thank you so much DSLRguide!!!
I'm not even into filming but the concept of what you're saying is interesting. I definitely see how your tips can apply artistically
this guy sounds like crocodile Hunter or is it just me?
1:35 - you're clearly English, why have you spelt colour like an American??
And again, calling it the T3i, which is surely the American name?
lmfao indeed, Larry. Because it really grinds my gears when British RUclipsrs use Americanisms. He may as well just go the whole hog and put on a New Jersey accent whilst he's at it...
maybe it's because most of his audience is American and most of the world calls the Rebel T3i a T3i. I know, I know, just think about it tough.
This video felt so long.
i pity your wife if you think 6 minutes is a long time
I just love to hear you talking about film man, the passion is so obvious!
You are fantastic. I haven't felt inspired for a good while, and this little video has me up and grabbing the camera again. Thank you for that
that's awesome!
Is a Nikon D7100 Good for this?
Like he said it doesn't matter what camera you use. It matters what's in front of it. That said... the D7100 is an amazing camera!
I came back to subscribe and like this video because 8 years ago I watched your videos when getting started with video with my canon rebel. Had to come back to recognize real talent.
You are the best simon
When I didn't know a bit about filmmaking
And now I'm directing a short film
And I love it u give importance to the audio
It's funny and ironic. I went to film school in Vancouver to learn all the tricks and trades of film, only to work in the film industry business, and I would always turn to this channel for advice, tips and reminding me how the film process works and making a movie is always fun.
That's what I've learned from this channel and will always support it. What's even funnier, is that I'm older than him and he has better advice than me XD
I've been watching your videos for several days. You inspire me.
Excellent points in this piece. Nuance, detail- The gold & diamonds of any film piece. Good form.
Without doubt, you are one of the most talented people I watch on youtube, being so young I think you will do some great work if you continue.
This was a perfect summarized video understanding the different pieces of filming cinematically. Well done!
Great advice! I wish sometimes I lived in the British Isles so I would be forced to work in cloudy situations. I think it forces you to analyze your shots more carefully and be less "lazy" with available light. Thanks!
Brilliant. Off the charts. Keep up the good work. The things you said just make so much sense. How every element in the composition must adhere to the simple theme of the storyline or the character. Simple and yet enriching the immerse-the-audience ambition of a film maker.
Great video man! When I saw this and knew I was already doing these things, I got really happy to know someone else is filming like I am. Keep filming man!!!
