Elise, I've wanted to do a video liked this for a while. So glad you did. I love several of Hobby Lobby yarns. I always wait for them to go on 30% off, they are usually well stocked and most are made in Turkey. I actually prefer I Love this Yarn for amigurumis. Sometimes I add mohair. But it has washed well for my granddaughter's toy I've made. If I want a crisper stitch definition I'll use I Love This Cotton. I love the range of colors, it's soft yet sturdy. I have been trying to find the DMC you like. Remind me where you get it.
I've used Breathe Deep and I actually have a hard time finding my stitches in the lighter colors and I feel I need to go with a smaller hook to keep the stitches closer. I have however made clothes with this for my bunnies and bears to change up the texture. It'll be interesting to see your follow up on it. I have never even thought of alpaca twist. I will now. I think it would be lovely. Also, keep trying the soft and sleek. I love this yarn even better than Premiers no pill because of it's price point, yardage and it fills in better. They've added more colors over the years because I do think it's a best seller. I've used it on my amigurumis with a 3.75-4mm and I've also added mohair. Maybe that would help they way it feels in your hands? I'm not sure. To me it's easy to work with but it may not be for everyone. Honestly what I love best is how well it holds up to play and washing. I try to spot clean as best as I can, but sometimes they just need the gentle cycle. I use a laundry bag, gentle soap but they come out great.
Have a wonderful weekend and loved this video so much.

@Misty Dawn thank you for some additional ideas. When you add mohair for texture, do you do so as an add-on or incorporate it as you go? I love Soft & Sleek but would like a different look occasionally. Thanks!

    • @mistydawncreates
      @mistydawncreates 2 года назад +3

@@elizabethhorstman3480 I hold two strands and use it as 1 if I want the overall texture for the full amigurumi. For example, I wanted a larger chick so used a bright yellow #4 I Love This Yarn and Hobbii Diablo with a 3.75mm hook and got a really nice fuzz. I used just the mohair on the top for added look of feathers. So it depends where you want that texture. Interestingly enough, I had a hard time deciding whether I liked the right side of the fabric or inside. The inside stitching actually shows off the mohair better so I've done that too for basic animals. I hope I'm articulating this well. Happy to answer more.

Wow! This is such a helpful video. I used a yarn from hobby lobby on my first Amigurumi project because it’s what I had on hand and it wasn’t great. Looking back, after using some really nice yarns I dislike it even more. I noticed they had beautiful colors recently but I was too scared to try them so I really appreciate you testing out so many different yarns! I hate that there aren’t any nice yarn shops where I live because I really enjoy going and looking in person, feeling the yarns, holding them against each other to see what looks nice together. I pretty much always order online. 😊

Hi Elise! I love most of Hobby Lobby yarn, but the one that looks like chenille was terrible when I made some soft booties for my boss' wife who has kidney cancer. Her chemo was causing the bottom of her feet to become raw. As I worked with the yarn, the soft tufts would fall out and leave just a thin thread. I returned the unused skeins and tossed the one I used. I love the "I Love This Yarn" and "I Love This Cotton." I enjoy walking through Hobby Lobby even if I don't need anything! Wishing you a blessed and Happy Easter 🐣 !

I love Hobby Lobby’s yarns! I have not tried any amigurumi with them yet (i usually use Sugar N Cream cotton yarn, especially for pet toys). I made a really gorgeous granny square cardigan using the 44th Street. I doubled up the strands, which gave it a bit more strength and brought it to a “not quite medium, but heavier than light” yarn feel. I also really love the Soft & Sleek collection - using it for my temperature blanket this year!

I really loved this video…. thanks very much for taking the time to do it all:). I have a wee tip for you and maybe viewers will like it too. I always have two bags at hand, one with an easy crotchet project….. at the moment it’s daisy granny squares …. The second bag has a knitting project….. baby blanket for eg. So, if I’m deeply engrossed in whatever happens to be my ‘important’ project and my hands become a bit ‘cranky’, I can change it out. I find this helps my hands a lot and also further up my arms. The benefit is also that you have 2 on-going projects that will be finished before you can say ‘knitted blanket’🥰.

@@DanielleRoy23 my go-to has always been 3.25 for worsted yarns but I was convinced to try a 4.0 with cotton yarns. Because they don't stretch as much when stuffing, the larger hook does not leave gaps and is a bit easier to work with.

"I Love This Yarn" is one of my go-tos for amigurumi. You can't beat the color range and price! I haven't tried the alpaca twist but have drooled over it several times. I might have to pick some up and give it a go. I made a shawl with the Warm and Cozy and it's divine! I don't think I've ever seen Breathe Deep in my local stores (there are five near me), but I might have just missed it. 44th Street is SO soft, but I definitely think it's better suited to a shawl or wrap than anything else. I'll have to pick up some Soft & Sleek, as well. I love that they have their yarn at 30% off every other week and now they've started having their crochet hooks and knitting needles at 50% off every other week. I think it's just the Yarnology ones, but still! At the moment I'm making the Anna Lucia shawl and using Lion Brand Mandala in Niffler..the colorway is so pretty! Happy Easter! Oh, if you look at the row of boxes that has the care instructions, the weight of the yarn is in the first box.

I felt like I had to pull my stitches through and I couldn’t keep a good posture or keep my elbow in. But working with I love this yarn or a chenille yarn, is like cake! Same pattern but no pain! Yarns are always 30% off at HL. If you are still falling for HL discounts, you need to think through the specifics. They raise the price by 30% and then put it on sale!! They also have really decreased the name brands they carry (all throughout the store). Yes they have some good yarns, prices 18:12 and really nice colors. I like the cottons. But don’t be fooled by the ‘sales’. I also have a problem with the political and religious beliefs and monetary donations. For me I will be very judicious in my choices and purchases!

Great video! My number one complaint about HL yarns in general is the color selection, rarely you see more than one shade of a color, for example the “I love this cotton” has one shade of pink which is not my favorite shade.
I wish we had more yarn selection here in the US. Although you can always order pretty much anything online, it’s good to know that if you need something you can simply go to a store to buy it. I personally like to see and feel before buying.

As someone with access to Hobby Lobby and not much else, I don't love most Yarn Bee stuff. Their acrylic hurts my hands really bad, and I'm not impressed with the quality. I Love This Yarn (the basic acrylic) feels much nicer to me and doesn't hurt my hands, and I Love This Cotton is a great cotton yarn (though I prefer mercerized cotton for amigurumi). It's always so interesting to see how different crafters feel about yarns that don't work for me and ones that do!

@@EliseRoseCrochet Bambootiful is smooth and kind of slippery so it seems to make it easier for me than cotton, but I wouldn't say it has any stretch, so it might not be for you. Also there's no halo. Urban Chic is more like cotton, but again it's easier for me to work than cotton, it feels more like acrylic on my hooks and needles. The most scrumptous bamboo yarn for me (I use s.3, DK or light weight) is Sirdar Snuggly baby bamboo which contains 20% wool -- but it runs lighter being a baby weight DK, and it's pricey. I got most of mine at a yarn shop close out sale, thankfully! It also tea- dyes beautifully and I love to soften bright colors by tea dying for a more vintage/antique look.

Recently I have ventured from amigurumi (I made your pigs and wolf) to blankets and just recently finished a blanket by Eleonora at Coastal Crochet.. I did the CAL from last year and just worked on my own for the last 8 weeks. I so loved the blanket journey.. She has You Tube videos to help and this was very enjoyable and my cup of tea. Eleonora lives in the UK. For the pattern Picnic on the Beach the yarn was Stylecraft Special DK. This now is my go to yarn. I’ve only knitted the Little Cotton Rabbits bunnies with it & they are so precious 😍 I’ve used the Lace Doilies, Silver & Charcoal. I love them all 🥰 Also, I knitted some clothes for them with the 44th street yarn and yes, it’s a little tedious to use, but the clothes are lovely. I used a single strand, so it’s very fine, but worth the patience. The size of the yarn is on each label, but it’s super tiny, but it’s there. I love this yarn it's a basic acrylic and very affordable, lots of colors and feels a little thicker than 4 I've worked with but it blends those fibers so will within the stitch. B if that makes sense. There's tons of colors. They are strong. And the wash will. I can say the same thing about I love this cotton. I love this yarn. If you like real tight stitch definition. It's sleek. Got tons of colors. It's a thinner four. The fresh Haven I've made rabbits with. You may end upvl liking it lmk

I've had this video in my que for a while. It's been a crazy few months and now that things are settled i'm ready to get my crochet on again. My beef with Hobby Lobby is that they have totally done away with almost every other brand and all you can find is that Yarn Bee. I remember back in the day they would stock many different brands. Now i drive about 65 miles to get to one of the last remaining independent yarn shops in the Houston area. That shop has so much diversity. So many brands. It's a bit overwhelming but the selection is phenomenal. I'm really glad you did this video because i wouldn't mind using their yarn but up until now i just didn't have any idea about performance. I literally just went to hobby lobby yesterday for my amigurumi project and picked up two of the brands you tested!!What great timing for this video! 😄 I got yarn ID for the first time( love the colors; they need more) and another new one was the soft and sleek. I normally get “I love this yarn” for amigurumi. It works up great, strong, doesn’t feel much like budget yarn (I hate plastic feeling yarn), it’s 355 yarns for just over $3 every other week with the 30% off yarn sale, comes in 65 colors, and easy on the joints. Best thing about it is that it’s easily accessible right down the road. Anyway, thanks so much for this video because I considered most of these yarns you tested and now I have a better idea of what I’ll be willing to try.
Forgot to mention: hobby lobby does have a sport weight with solid colors called yarn bee yarntopia. It only comes in 16 colors but they are pretty. They also have yarn bee cozy toes (but the colors are not solid and yarn bee authentic hand dyed alpaca yarn (more expensive and not many color options). Hope that helps.

I have only used the I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby. I like it because of all the color choices and it is a great price and so soft. I have made several Amigurumi toys with it and find it to be easy in my hands and not splitty. I love the stitch definition and how strong it is when sewing the pieces together. One of the light yarns you mentioned 44th street might be good for knitting socks. My husband can't tolerate wool socks which I love to knit. So I might try that for his socks. I was disappointed because the linen color is perfect and I haven’t found a match elsewhere. However, I use Soft & Sleek regularly for crocheted toys and like the finished products quite a bit. Now I envy you! 😂

If you like Breathe Deep also try Bernat Bundle Up and Lion Brand Feels Like Butta. I love using them for amigurumi.
Also Hobby Lobby does include their yarn weights in MICRO on the labels. It is below the box of info and inside a drawing of a microscopic skein of yarn. If you have a magnifying glass (lol) you can see it.

Thanks for this video. I need direction as to what yarns to use as I am new to Amigurumi, and your Three Little Pigs and Not So Big bad Wolf patterns are the first patterns I've ever purchased. I went to my local Hobby Lobby and was overwhelmed by the yarn choices. I did not get any of the ones you tried, but I did get the Yarn Bee Nature's Nook. I loved the colors although not many to choose from. The Bare Blush is 3.5 oz, 180 yds and is 54% Acrylic, 28% Lyocell and 18% Flax. I like using it (with my 3.5mm hook) but it is a little splitty and has texture that has some pokey bits of what I assume is the flax. Not so sure it would be a good toy to be played with by a tiny tot. I look forward to trying your recommendations in the future.

I picked soft and sleek weight 4 for my next project. I am making a bat for my daughter from animal friends of pica pau book (also you recommendation) .
I will try the alpaca yarn next. Thank you for this video. I really love to buy yarn at a store. I love to touch the yarn I buy.

So I’m confused….which yarn did you like the best?
I just picked up “Yarntopia” because of the colors (bought 12 of the 16 shades) and it’s sheen. It’s 100% acrylic and a #2 weight but is thicker than some of Yarn Bee’s #3 weights. (Wanted something finer to make radishes and carrots for the Bernat Velvet bunnies I made.). The yarn is soft but is bulky looking when worked up. A #3 yarn (but looks like a #2) that made a beautiful and fine beet (in oxblood) was “Soft & Sleek DK Low - Pill fiber”, it’s 100% acrylic. 16 colors in this line. I’m still trying to find my favorite Hobby Lobby yarn too!

I'm not sure I had a favorite. I liked many of them, but to choose one favorite I would have to make a full toy I think. They do have some beautiful colors!! 🧶🧶🧶

Hi Elise, the only yarn in your demo that I've used for amigurumi is the "Warm and Cozy" like you I LOVED the colors and thought "Parment" would make a really cute Easter Bunny; however, Iran into the same problems with it that you mentioned. I had to work with it only during daylight because it was so hard to see the stitches. I do own some of the other yarns in your review but haven't used them yet.

They do label all their yarn for the size. All the yarn I've ever bought from hobby lobby the size is on there. It is right below the little graph telling about the fiber. It's next to the washing instructions. You have to hunt for a little bit, but it's there

Yes, it is very tough to frog. I use a lot of mohair so I'm used to picking out the stitches, but it can be a bugger at times! But boy is it pretty though! 🧶🧶🧶

I prefer to run to Hobby Lobby for my yarn. I have ordered different yarns online from different companies. Shipping costs can quickly become a problem. Plus, you can't touch the yarn. That's a problem for me. I am currently using I Love This Cotton for my toys. I am presently making the birds from A Partridge In A Pear Tree by Kerry Lord. This yarn is working well. I really look forward to your videos. Shoot, I keep rewatching all your videos. Thanks

Oh, I want a pool of yarn to fall into! I really don't know what I would do with myself in a store like Hobby Lobby, a dream yet to come true. Those yarns are gorgeous and i loved the colors, but what I really loved more was ... seeing again your adorable knitted bunny! Have you given her a name? She is the reason I started knitting again after ages... and, guess what, it's a bunny. 😊 BTW, those thicker yarns you didn't like crocheting, you can use as doll hair. Looks lovely! For the fluffy yarns you can't see the stitches, try using a slightly bigger hook and reserve it for toys you don't have to stuff tightly. Just some things I picked up on the way. 💕

I so appreciate this video! I love Hobby Lobby, love all the decor and love the multiple craft offerings, but when they transitioned from mainstream yarn brands to mostly their brand, I had trouble shopping there. I make to gift and make to last, and never really found a HL yarn that didn't pill, even the low-pill line. When I make an heirloom quality baby blanket, I don't want to have to include a lint shaver in the gift bag. I make swatches and "live with them", carrying them in my pocket to see how long they stay pretty. I was very interested in seeing your take on HL yarns. We now live an hour from our closest HL, but I may pick up the ones you're willing to give a chance next time I'm there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I can't wait to see how your experiment turns out.

Hi, the weight of the yarn is a little yarn skein symbol on the label that has a number of the weight in the middle. :) hopes this helps. I actually saw it on the label in one of your shots, it’s pretty small so I can see how you missed it. Great video!
