As per Meguiar's, the ULTIMATE is PH balanced and will not hurt painted brake parts (zinc coated rotors, painted brake calipers, and etc). As for the other cleaner, it suggested that you remove the wheel/tire. There is your $5 difference.
Hot rims is a iron remover (acid based as it dissolves iron ) the purple colour changing is a gimmick in ultimate Phenanthroline is the ingredient to change colour but that’s all it does not dissolve iron

i actually use both, idk i just always have. I start witht the black bottle and spray it on the wheels and tire when dry then scrub with a brush then pressure wash them, after that I follow up with the washing of the car and spray the wheels with the foam canon and after i rinse i spray the purple bottle and scrub one last time then rinsing, drying and tire shine.
Same in UK, decent stuff but high premium, Auto Glym is the best comparison for a UK product for the Everyman but recently been getting into Bilt Hamber, best all round value and a more trade focused product.

And put coating on u r rims to save u less time cleaning your tire and rims save you time spraying just wash off with water save u time and they both don’t win because it’s dry u r tires out

just bought one from halfords ,yes still £16 on shelf ,,but i saw it advertised online on halfords website,for £12 .80.. asked them to check ,, they did.. and then i had it for the £12.80...still pricey though
That's not how you use the wheel cleaner..... You spray it all over on dry wheels until it turns purple (taking the dirt/rust off) and then you wash it off with a hose... And dry the wheels with a microfiber cloth to get rid of the rest of the dirt.

So for the Ultimate you can use it as an iron remover on the paint as it's safe but not the hot wheels right

The price difference where I live is 7 dollars. I went with the purple one because like you said it works just as well and more cost efficient.

The Hot rims wheel and tyre cleaner contains acid and you should avoid getting it on the paint the ultimate doesn't contain acid
