Both men were raised in very strict, even abusive religious homes. Both were in the closet, and tried to suppress their own nature. Bowie himself recognized his own, because he too suppressed his own nature. All three definitely expressed their nature in their music and dress, because that’s all they could do, at the time. RIP all three men. They contributed so much to the world.

@@absoluttchamp greedy? She can’t just want to hear from one of her favorite artist own mouth while alive rather than a bunch of white people kinda putting all their input on his family most likely without permission. The industry already killed him, then they send a bunch of people with no common upbringing to paint him as a sex addicted, sexually confused, problem child who grew to try and escape his childhood. Basically labeling him a walking contradiction, but isn’t that just the definition of humanity? I agree with Codename Diva cuz they treated Prince like a slave so if anything, the industry made him crazy on top of his upbringing and I ain’t too trustworthy on what 5 white people have to say about a man who they already took advantage of, so I too would have liked Prince to tell his own story from his own mouth or in a book. Tupac once said he wants to write a book and make money off his pain and when asked “all those records aren’t money for you pain?” He explained how music and novels are two different depths that can’t be reciprocated by the other, so yes, his music would be different than him telling the story with no baseline and drums behind it.

It breaks my heart to hear his story. However, we have to understand that it was all his child-life experiences that shaped and drove him and in the end made him so successful. We all live our lives the best to our ability, no matter who we are we all have obstacles. The music didn't necessarily die when he passed, it died when more and more acts were being signed for millions of dollar contracts/manufactured. Its pretty obvious even he knew this, why do you think he put "SLAVE" on his cheek. The natural born artists like Prince & MJ were pushed to the side having to promote themselves now, while the record companies were promoting these manufactured acts to push the agenda.

Suing people for sampling Prince's music from the late 80s on is not a very smart move in term of artistic behavior and understanding, neither is Xian-certified a charity for targeted struggling musicians. I feel sorry for his lifelong bleeding wounds though, this being the basic guy's condition. Abusive parents are waste, no need of this low-rate humanity to shape a genius. Though this confirms the rule genius can grow from every possible fumy.

He had a time bomb on him mathematically speaking. It's mean able to calculate the drug usage with the damage for how many years will go down. Prince knew it and he put his signs up before it happened. His chef said he could not eat everything came back up and could not sleep. He was suffering and it showed how skinny he was and sitting only his last concerts.

i don`t think that Prince would have liked to have his story told as if he had been a victim, a poor and weak outcast... He was a genius, he was God-like, he will always go on, live on.. Thank to the heavens above and all the gods and goddesses that there was Prince! It pissed me off that his parents just didnt get it ? I was amazed at his personal growth then deeply saddened by his demise. The toughest part for me was when his TRUE FRIEND said : We loved him WHEN HE HAD NOTHING and then to see him riding around on his bicycle, all alone....Now that got to me.

You have to remember that both his parents were failed performers, his father a jazz pianist and his mother a singer. I don't think it would be too off the mark to say that they were jealous of his talent and success. His performance at the George Harrison Tribute was beyond mind-blowing. It breaks my heart watching this documentary and learning how unloved he felt throughout his life. Rest in Peace, Prince. You'll NEVER be forogtten.

I try to keep an open mind about these types of documentaries, though they always fall short in interpreting a talented artist. Prince was, after the hype and spin a truly mysterious man, almost an enigma to himself. His life was shaped by formative influences and lived, guided and controlled by him and him alone. No one, I mean no one can confidently speak for him. Prince's energy, spirit and ethereal essence has moved on. He's free.

I had no idea that his parents were as deeply rooted in religion as they were.
Now I understand why he responded to me as he did when our paths crossed long ago in after seeing George Micheal perform. My mention of my Dad serving as a minister in Duluth in the early 70s may have been a "trigger," for him after the show. No doubt I was nothing more than one of thousands of people he'd seen over the decade before "armed with a camera." He called me the Light Sculptor from the Show Me state. I have clung to and tried to live up to that name ever since.
    Thank you for posting this!!!!
Days have been a bit challenging since my first solo art show has been postponed until March due to weather.
I needed to see something to elevate/remind me of my own internal thoughts as an artist after this weekend's "let down."

This is the perfect example of why artists need to tell their own stories before they pass, like Janet Jackson just did. If Prince were alive he would not approve of this documentary. Yes he had sad moments, but everyone does. He also was known to be a big jokester, he loved to laugh and so many of his true close friends & industry friends attest to that. Where is the purple camp? Listen to Apollonia, Moris Day, the blonde from Vanity 6, and others fun memories about Prince from people other than what seems to be here, his disgruntled workers. He simply had different relationships with different people. The fact they left out Vanity who was a HUGE love in his life & just glazed past his relationships with his wives proved they were just trying to tell a “dark” story on Prince’s life in this fake-deep documentary. Another huge part of Prince’s life was his pro-blackness and he actually did a lot for the black community. SLAVE period wasn’t him fighting a “demon” he was a pioneer who helped music artists who for so long had been taken advantage of by labels that took artists publishing. His addiction to pain meds at the end of his life was a tragedy & we all know Fentanyl is a huge problem still, but that was not the totality of his life. I could go on and on, this doc missed the mark in so many ways. Plus the re-enactment scenes were horrible lol.

As a Prince (PRN) fan, this was hard to watch. I was at PRN's last Essence performance in New Orleans (2014). Happened to have breakfast with a person who did security detail for PRN during the Essence Fest who said that before his main performance (in between popping on stage with Janelle Monae and Nile Rodgers) that he was taken to a nearby hospital. What for? He would not confirm, but my guess is it was probably pain-related dealing with his hip. I felt sad just to know that he had been in such pain, because he gave a great performance.
Just watching the end of this documentary brought back the sadness of his death again. He was not a run of the mill drug addict - he was in severe, chronic pain. Ultimately his body could not handle those drugs (not that anyone else's could). I just wish that someone had been there to watch over him being so fresh from the incident on the plane, and he had gotten the help that he needed to wean himself off of those medications. Maybe he'd still be with us. RIP, Prince Rogers Nelson.

He clearly was a controversial figure but in no shape or form was he a victim of his past.
If he was regular person with regular problems and a regular talent,
he would not be able to write, play or produce music that was beyond the known and the possible.

THEY DAMN WELL KNOW AND KNEW THEY’RE ABUSIVE. And every time they abused and neglected us *THEY MADE THAT DECISION.* No abuser abuses 24/7/365 but their PATTERN of behavior defines them as abusers.
I cut no quarter with abusers. I do not accept their rationalizations or those of the bystanders who do nothing and are every bit culpable as abuse sympathizers. Bah. They’re despicable, all of them.

Pain rarely gives you a choice of becoming an addict. People just can't comprehend what acute chronic pain can do, it can take your should as surely as addiction can. I definitely understand this in him

The way his parents treated him, and the way his dad basically ripped out his heart with his fists at his most vulnerable helpless state is so sad.

Prince was one of a kind. There was never anyone like him before or after him. Prince’s parents really did a number on him as a child. It’s sad to think that he never got past what they did to him. My hope and prayers are that maybe now Prince has found the happiness he never had in this life.

While it's nice to think that way, enlightement doesn't lead you to accidental overdose with painkillers. Artist ARE indeed more sensitive, more emotional souls - that enables them to make art (instead of products) but it does come with a price. If people saw them first and foremost as people, who need to be loved, instead as just superstars or supermen, they might be less lonely and less likely to leave us before their time.

I've listened and loved Prince's music for years but never got to know much about his life. I felt so sad and sorry for him.
When I saw what he sang about in his last shows with the piano only, I couldn't help but understanding and feeling his pain. I am also a child of a broken home and disguised my sadness with so many unhealthy things. No matter how many years pass or how much therapy you take, it tends to come back and still breaks you. You are broken forever. That's why it's so important to speak your mind and have people who love you around. I wish he would make so many barriers. If only he could had open up and share his vulnerability, the story would have ended very differently.
    Rip , Prince.
