i think the real issue with the "remake classic fairytale disney movie but make it woke" thing is that it's still a disney movie in the end, so any diversity or subverted tropes they try to include still come across as soulless. there are countless other adaptations of classic fairy tales that actually do something interesting, actually challenge the misogynistic tropes (beyond just making the princess a hashtag girlboss), actually retell the story from a poc perspective--but since it's disney doing it as an official remake, they CAN'T use the framework of these classic stories to say anything genuinely subversive, so any attempts to do so come across as very surface-level and no one's happy with it.
I think the dress looks cheap because of the material and the way it is fitted on Rachel. If they used a more expensive texture like silk, it would've suited the royal aesthetic but they went for a more airy chiffon like material and chiffon is such a tricky material to look expensive. If you don't drape it properly and give it some sort of structure then it's gonna look like a cheap cupcake. Also the top with the gigantic puff full sleeves doesn't do anything for Rachel's body type. She looks petit so they could've lowered the waistline, showed some skin on the arms and make the puff sleeve smaller according to her proportions so she doesn't look swallowed by the dress. But they went for the exaggerated Halloween costume and couple that with that small hairstyle with no volume, she just looks like a nightmare. This is such a big failure on the costume design department.
I think they spent most of their budget on the CGI and reshoots, and cut corners in the other departments. There is NO WAY that the costume and hair department is pleased with this outcome.
I feel you about the dress. I've seen cosplays ten times more regal than that Temu knockoff. Plus we have to consider the whole "corsets are patriarchy" nonsense again, since the time period the dress was styled after was very heavy on the corset use and it looks significantly worse without it. I can't lie, I was also hoping for something more historically accurate too but I thought at minimum it'd at least look,,,, professional y'know?
Also, we're talking about Snow White's outfit, but in the cartoon in that scene... If I'm not mistaken, she's in the poor person's garb because she's made to be a servant so she doesn't look like a princess, and it makes me wonder if they just tried to go a whole different route or something where maybe the actress is too good for that. I don't know? But she's in that outfit with the patches and rips in the clogs

The white collar should have been bigger to copy the original, and the hair is doing her no favours. It should have been a chin-length bob to make it much softer. So with the deer in the Cartoon she runs through the scary forest and everything is frightening because she is in a panic and then it shows creepy eyes looking at her and then they step into the light and it’s just a bunch of cute animals.

The colors of the costume are wrong that’s the first offense. The bodice is supposed to be a dark cobalt blue with red accents. The skirt isn’t that in your face yellow they chose I’d almost say it’s more of a cream color or pale yellow. Then you have the hideous red shoes they gave her when snow whites matched her skirting.
