    I like the idea of having a trailer as an ice fishing hut! I have a 5x8 that I set up for camping and put a similar side window in but it is an emergency exit as well... what if someone locks you in? One last thing you should consider is to reinforce the door where you installed the latch... that door flexes a lot and you may find it will bend at that weak point.

    • @JoelTremblayCA
      @JoelTremblayCA  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! I typically put my puck lock on the latch so that no one can close the bar on me. I don't normally see people where I go camping so I am not terribly worried about that.

  • @markrossbach1458
    @markrossbach1458 2 года назад

    You should put tin over it, The same size as the insulation under the flooring and then vulcom all seems. It needs to be enclosed. It's quite hilarious How everyone on this page is saying good job, well done, you did a great job, you know why they're saying that!? because they don't know the 1st thing about building, Also make sure you have a very good ventilation system pulling out the humidity and bringing in fresh air.

    • @JoelTremblayCA
      @JoelTremblayCA  2 года назад +1

      Yep, I wrote a book (my thesis) on the design, building science, and logistics of converting a cargo trailer for camping usage, including the importance of ventilation. I've done my homework and although I might not have the most experience building, I think I did a good job with the resources I have. I appreciate all the feedback I can get, I'm always learning. I thought about enclosing the underside of the floor with sheet, if you watch my individual build videos, you'll see me discuss this. It's been 2 years, and I still haven't enclosed the bottom and the insulation is still there, looking like the day I installed it. I used rigid XPS boards that are moisture resistant. The idea of leaving it open allows for water, mud, snow, salt, etc. Dry out. You can't build it like a house, it's not a house, it's a trailer. If it's enclosed then water will get in, no matter what you do. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support.

  • @charminbaer2323
    @charminbaer2323 2 года назад

    Pretty damn cool build, very minimalist like I want. One thing I've noticed with many of these builds is the continued use of these ceiling lights. I'd be much better, easier AND cheaper to use LED rope/strip lights around the top perimeter. You only need one point of power source instead of running power wires through out the ceiling. You also have the added benefit of different color lighting as well. I used to want a 5x8 trailer but now I'm more convinced I want a 6x8 at least, and definitely standing room.Thanks for sharing.

    If its for occasional ice fishing then you live in snow country. I CANNOT imagine the moisture that we be trapped on the underside with that foam board. I vote for closed cell spray foam. Much much fewer intrusion points and waterproof.

    • @JoelTremblayCA
      @JoelTremblayCA  2 года назад +1

    Just wondering if your trailer came with some kind of plywood/OSB Walls and, if so, why did you exclude them in the final build? I have 3/8" OSB walls on my newer trailer and I thought about leaving them on to reinforce the sturdiness of the structure of the trailer, but now I am thinking of leaving them out to cut down on weight and because of the strong off-gass smell. This video will help a lot of people (like me) really grasp the big picture of a conversion. Thanks again!

    • @JoelTremblayCA
      @JoelTremblayCA  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment! My trailer only came with a very flimsy 1/4" plywood that wasn't too nice to look at. If it was a thicker plywood I might of reinstalled it but I do like the idea of saving weight.

    • @frenchfryfarmer436
      @frenchfryfarmer436 2 года назад

      I actually added 5/8" plywood to my entire floor AND side walls. I feel it is the minimum to actually be able to mount E track to safely for my loads, additonally I needed rigidity to push my foam board between the studs tight to the outer sun, worked perfectly.

      I'm eyeing up a 6x12 for towing behind my Cherokee. It has a dry weight of 1200lbs and a max of 2900lbs. All my research indicates to plan for somewhere between 10-15% of max weight. I think you'd be fine with a trailer Joel's size, at least in terms of tongue weight. There is actually much more to it than tongue weight though. Check out towcalculator.com.

    That's awesome. Just about to jump into a 6x8 conversion here and definitely found some inspiration from your build. Did you design that bed as a slide out into a double? Been trying to figure out the most efficient ways of getting that done so you can rock as a single or mix up for a double.

    For a off road trailer, why didn't you do a axle flip. To get more ground clearance ?

    • @JoelTremblayCA
      @JoelTremblayCA  3 года назад

      James, with the installation of larger off road wheels, it gained a considerable amount of clearance. (Level with the truck) I thought about doing an overslung axle but that would raise the trailer way too much. I will most likely replace my drop axle with a straight axle if I ever feel like I need it more lift.
      With a drop axle you can't just "flip the axle" as the axle is designed to be positioned a certain way. What you can do is switch it from underslung to overslung. You will have to weld brackets on the opposite side of the axle of course!
      Thanks for watching!

    • @jamesfrancisco7308
