  • The Stephen Keene virginal of 1668 is both beautful to see and hear. In this video Jan Waterfield plays music by John Blow.

It seems to me that it feels very pleasant to the touch, and the tuning is wonderful.

Thank you for your lovely comment. Our musical instrument conservator takes extra care to tune each of the instruments to the historic pitch and temperment.

Splendido strumento, bellissimi i bassi. Originale la tastiera con i naturali in ebano, come nei cembali francesi, fiamminghi o inglesi.
    Grande Blow, delicatissima interpretazione. Grazie.

We are glad you enjoyed the performance. The piece is from John Blow's Suite in A Minor: 1. Almand

Bravo! Does this work the same as a clavichord by any chance?

This works in the same way as a harpsichord - it plucks the string when the key is pressed.

It’s an unruly child because the keys in the base are short with little leverage to raise the jacks
