Wonderful presentation. The Muselar is such a special instrument. A tone like no other harpsichord. Rich and full with a tenor that has a profound fundamental. Thank you so much for your studied approach and interpretation. Cheers
This is a setting of Dowland's Lachrimae. Copenhagen, Det Kongelige Bibliotek, manuscript appendix to Gabriel Voigtländer’s Erster Teil allerhand Oden und Lieder (1642), ff.2r-3v [after 1642]. Paduana Lagrima | M. Schildt.
Thank you Howard! It's complicated: the instrument was part of 11 sets of parts designed by D.J. Way. The parts were distributed to agents of Zuckermann Harpsichords, provided with a drawing and no construction manual. Several instruments were finished, including this one, but muselaars have many peculiarities and difficulties. This one was assembled by William J. Unruh, complete with a soundboard painting and fully strung. But his string spacing and pining/musical finishing was faulty. We added an arpichordum stop once we got the stringing and pinning corrected, and completely redecorated the case and provided a landscape for the lid. All musical elements were done by Curtis Berak (Los Angeles) and David van Ness (Berkeley). The lid painting by Dwight Been (San Francisco) and the case faux marble and papering by myself and Tony Brazier (Los Angeles). As such, the instrument plays easily, and is incredibly stable tuning wise and mechanically.
@@GilbertMartinezHarpsichord many thanks Gilbert for that amazing rundown of the birth of this instrument. Tonally and artistically it was well worth the wait. And your playing was a suitable complement to it.
