Destiny 2 Lore - Did we just forget about Oryx's Dreadnaught? If Xivu claims it, we could be screwed

  • Destiny 2's Lore and Story is coming to a climax with the upcoming Final Shape expansion, but there are some story elements like the Dreadnaught from all the way back in the Taken King that have somewhat fallen by the wayside. Today I wanted to present the idea that we should really care more about The Dreadnaught because it represents a series of missed story opportunities for Bungie and the universe of Destiny.

Watching the cabal and hive battle it out only for the Primus to be taken right in front of us was awesome. Also, how many other Cabal have we met that are on that same level as that guy? Ghaul, Caiatl, Calus, all them were technically above that Primus in rank but still, at that time he was one of the most high ranking cabal we had ever seen and Oryx just... Took him, in one moment. @@tarantularancher5748 The reason I think the Worm Gods would make a pact with Toland in the future, is because us killing the Witness, revealing the truth to the Hive of it’s deception, Savathun’s defection from them, and us killing the Hive Gods (Savvy’s bound to die in the future), could make the Worms question how they execute their Sword Logic. They’d still practice it, just think from another perspective. Thus, they would choose the Hive-obsessed, mad Warlock, Toland. Maybe he does take over Xivu or Oryx’s Throneworld? The Worms are impressed, and choose them as a new Hive God. They’d must’ve seen the potential in Eris, she was the most powerful Hive God for a very short time. They’d probably even feared Eris, she could’ve killed the Worm Gods, and the rest of the Hive to exterminate them all, ending with Xivu. Making Eris, the last living Hive. Him taking one of, or maybe even both, vacant Throneworlds, could convince the Worms that they must change their approach, they all confirm, and Toland is brought back into flesh. Remade, as Toland, Hive God of Chaos. There has been much chaos in the universe, and especially Sol, since the Witness, and the Collapse. Plus, with Xivu and Savathun dead, the Worms would look to create replacements to the three siblings, as without the Hive Gods, the Worms would be defenseless against the Guardians’ slaughter.

    I think a fantastic story thread would be if you had Nokris try to claim the Dreadnought as a means of claiming his father's throne and legacy as the next Taken King, with Savathun and Xivu Arath trying to contest his claim. Then you could actually explore Nokris' character and his relationship with his deceased father.

    • @ivegonefishing482
      @ivegonefishing482 7 месяцев назад +18

      @@garrettviewegh9028 Nokris isn't like normal Hive. His pact with Xol (who has his heart) and his necromancy allowed him to resurrect himself after he was killed during the Warmind campaign. However because necromancy goes against the principles of the sword logic he has been unable to create his own throne world. He tried to subvert that limitation by having us kill him and allowing his own death to be the tribute needed to create himself a throne world. However Savathun caught onto this clever trickery and instead brought him into her own throne world where they made a pact. Nokris would teach Savathun his necromancy and pledge his loyalty to her and she would give him "insight into the dreaming mind's talent" (the dreaming mind is the taken Vex Mind Quoria Blade Transformed). He then acted as Savathun's instrument of interference during the season of Arrivals to prevent us from communing with the Pyramids. At the end of the season we fought and killed him in the Ascendant space and it was presumed that he would stay dead. Some will argue that this is the end of his story but I say we can't be certain because Nokris is a Necromancer, he wasn't killed in his own throne world (if he was even successful in creating his own throne world with Savathun's interference), and Xol the worm god who has Nokris' heart technically still lives on as the Whisper of the Worm Exotic sniper rifle. Plus we have to find out if Nokris got what he had bargained for and what he planned on doing with that knowledge. Also Nokris as a character has been done a great disservice. The outcast son of Oryx who was hinted at in Destiny One doesn't deserve to die as a mere strike boss or even as a pawn of the Witch Queen.

    I wish we had strikes on Pyramid Ships/key points of interest. The Witness is inside the Traveler and the rest of the Pyramid Fleet is just sitting inside Sol doing nothing. We should be launching offensives on these ships to cripple the enemy, but instead we're sitting idly by doing nothing. Same thing with the Dreadnaught! It's just sitting there doing nothing when we, the Vanguard, should be actively working to secure it so it doesn't fall into enemy hands.

      @garrettviewegh9028 7 месяцев назад +4

      I feel like, we may get an episode in the future, that explores the storyline of the Coalition routing the Witness’ remaining forces and ships out of Sol. Some loyalists may be tries, executed, or simply imprisoned. But, as for how that story plays out, the big plot points would be: how we destroy the pyramids, as assaults would take too long, and certain enemies could utilize them after the war to attack us. Destroying the pyramids, and how that happens. Finally, the last plot point would be, how the Coalition deals with the fleeing Witness forces. After we’ve destroyed the Shadow legion and Pyramid fleets, we have the option to run them all out of Sol, or kill most and imprison the few. It could take years to trial them all for their crimes. I think we’ll find a way to simultaneously destroy the Pyramid and Shadow fleets. Maybe through a strike or raid.

    Another possibility to consider: Cabal do not pull out of a battleground until their victory. And with the Hive destroying Torobatl, the contingent there may have become extra motivated to claim it. Add in the Empress setting up shop in Sol as well. Cabal love big weaponry, and the Dreadnought's strategic value would make it a prime theater to place the Ascendancy's attention on. Even if not her, former Red Legion, maybe the Psion Splinter, or the Shadow Legion could try to assert control of it in a bid for dominance.
    Or we patrol it between Crucible matches on Cathedral of Dusk. And it's just as unpopular in-universe as it is for the players because of that fact.

    The Vanguard didn't learn. They left the Dreadnaught unsecured and luckily nothing has become of that. But when we left The Almighty alone, some Psions aimed it at Earth to obliterate the Last City. That incident should have prompted the Vanguard to immediately secure the Dreadnaught and leave behind a small detail to protect it, thus allowing Eris Morn and others to study it and learn.

    Since you asked, I agree. Xivu taking the dreadnought would be a perfect road to down.
    I remember that artwork from the light fall book, the dreadful image of the God of War, her billowing cape a closing pit of ever swallowing darkness, her own figure cast in the shadows of her relentless power.
    That was the God of War I wanted to see. But, if Xivu continues on as she is, she’ll be little more than a well designed knight.
    I want to see her take the dreadnought, I want to see her swollen with power when we come to face her.
    If not, I will be grossly disappointed.

And then eventually taking the push to the Cabal home world with Cailtl and liberating their planet of the hive as well

      Oryx was impending doom, and Savathun was never meant to be “scary”. She was always the most irritating (I love the character themselves, dont get me wrong) obstacle to every plan while holding her own schemes that could grant her victory. She makes others fear themselves and their comrades, she makes enemies tear themselves apart with either mind control or worry.

    Man this video posed an awful lot of questions that have direct existing answers
    Xivu was already on the dreadnaught/ has claimed it. (theres a lore tab in Deep where she chats with the witness).
    We destroyed the main weapon on the dreadnaught. That was like the first thing we did in the taken king storyline. Repairing it is likely off the table as the dreadnaught is dying (in Immolant pt. 2 when osiris is boarding the place) speculation here, but this decay of the dreadnaught is likely due to oryxs death. Death of ascendant hive causes a throne to collapse, eventually. The older the hive the longer this seems to take
    We do know how the weapon works, its oryx expanding his throne into reality temporarily. (Book of sorrow, where the eversion of the dreadnaught is detailed) This is referred to as an eversion breach in the dreadnaught grimoire card, and is connected to other taken portals, so thats how it can be used to take. No oryx, no control over the throne. Xivu cant control her throne since banishment. The weapon is pernamently disabled.
    The last thing is the core detonation being a system killer. Why in the name of god would xivu detonate it when the witness needs the traveller conscious to 1. Find the veil 2. Link the veil and now 3. Be inside the traveller.
    Thats assuming the core isnt also diminishing based on what was said in immolant pt 2.
    As for why we dont hold it outselves, keep in mind the dreadnaught is the size of the moon, and riddled with hive. To completey secure it would require a herculean effort, and we cant hold even a medium sized city without an incursion every 6-9 months.
    So its a site of limited use to our enemies (that xivu is already sat on, fuffilling the "legitimacy" point. Though i dont know what sitting on the site of your civilisations greatest defeat does for morale, but you do you). Osiris was able to breach it and interface with it fairly handily, no different from any other guardian mission. Would we not be better off securing the moon? Hell, securing earth? There are 100 higher priorities than the limping megastructure thats slowly disintegrating

  • @SymbioteMullet
    @SymbioteMullet 7 месяцев назад +1

    Thing is...
    Throne worlds decay once their creator is defeated.
    When we killed the Mindbender back in Forsaken, his Throne collapsed in under a minute.
    His Throne was fairly small, but this should still apply to other ascendant beings.
    But how quick is that collapse?
    We went back to Crota's Throne in TTK to steal his essence, and although the oversoul was gone the geometry of the place still seemed intact... (development logic, this might have been before thrones collapsing was a thing)
    We know that Thrones can change dramatically - Mara Sov's throne is Taken, broken beyond repair, although it still seems to perform it's function of keeping her immortal.
    Savathun's throne is an even messier situation, we don't know if the removal of her worm caused her to stop being Ascendant - Mara, Toland and the Mindbender didn't need worms to create and maintain their thrones, so if she was the Ascendant one then Immaru never needed to reforge her in light.
    But if her Worm was the ascendant being, then the fact that she's basically conquered her worm's throne is remarkably impressive. Especially as we have turned the owner of that throne into a gun.
    The symbiotic/parasitic nature of krill and worm makes this rather tangled. It fits that the worms would be ascendant rather than the hosts, and they just drag the hive along for the ride, since the deal between them was always one-sided.
    So, back to Oryx's throne.
    It should be decaying.
    It should be dissolving back into the Sea of Screams like it was never there - this may be why it's called derelict all the time.
    During King's Fall, we shoot into Oryx's chest, hitting him in the Worm - both the King and the Parasite died that day.
    So the real question is why is it still there?
    My personal theory is that the Narthex, the power source of the Dreadnought the Bond Brothers were hoping to destroy, is the lock and key holding the Dreadnought and Throne together.
    We know the Dreadnought can be damaged, as the Cabal were able to break it's outer hull when they crashed their ship into it.
    Perhaps the Ascendant part of the ship will fade away and only the physical shell will remain?
    It looks from gameplay like there is some difference between the physical and ascendent spaces of the Dreadnought - the raid starts with activating the Court of Oryx and going through an ascendant portal to areas you can't access on patrol, that begin to get a bit weird, like the ship jumping puzzle - you can see stars to either side of that hall, it's a weird bit of architecture.
    Presumably all that ascendant space will be inaccessible?
    Oryx appeared to command the ship from a physical space, but beyond making it move, perhaps most of the higher functions of the ship have simply faded away...?

    Xivu could easily use the Dreadnugaht as a powerful flagship for her armada. She may no longer be immortal, but if Torrobaital is where she chooses to make her final stand, we’ll have countless Hive, War Moons, Tombships, other ships, and the Dreadnuaght to deal with. Which would make matters worse. It was already hard for us to infiltrate, let alone make a beach head to transmat onto. But, Toland could step in after we’ve permanently killed Xivu (and Oryx) taking every precaution to ensure they don’t come back, and take the Dreadnuaght. We know it can’t be destroyed either.

    Couple of points here.
    #1... the Dreadnaught is HUGE. It's been calculated that its diameter is the equivalent of Earth's moon. You don't need to blow it up, or even fire its weapon.. You need to nudge it in Earth's direction and unlike the Almighty it would end everything on Earth if it fell into it so it is definitely the biggest mobile blunt force instrument in the system outside of any of its regular array of tricks.
    #2... we (somewhat) recently started "going back" there for crucible matches which means that A. we are either there ourselves or B. if this is just a representation of it in one of Shaxx's "holodecks" it has to have been scoped out and catalogued by his Redjacks meaning there should be somewhat of an active force there or has been recently.
    #3... I don't think anyone will mind seeing the Dreadnaught return to the Destiny universe as a playable location. I routinely pop into D1 to play and I can tell you most players are either in the tower, the dreadnaught or the plaguelands. I welcome its return both for lore and gameplay.

    I wonder if this is what Xivu's next plan is. Banished from her own throne world even if she cant take control of the dreadnought entirety, it is probably rhe safest place in Sol for the hive. Along with it being one of the few locations to hold a large enough army to assault the last city or the pale heart itself. If she can somehow take hold of Oryx's throne world or even as you said invert her own, she would be the strongest enemy left outside from the Witness

    this might be what they do with episode (1?) heresy, the core thing might be gaining a foothold and then pushing Xivu's brood or lucent hive out, the scattering of the scorn that will probably happen post final shape that we already saw with warlord's could see a them wanting to take the dreadnaught for themselves to give themselves a foothold that has access to the ascendant plane, this could get the mindbender back into the game and his play could be trying to get the barons back. we could have some weird feelings of "hey these guys aren't just zombies, they think like the Eliksni or anyone else, is it moral to keep fighting them or should we try talking?" which could lead to some characters not forgiving them for Cayde's death, those feeling drudged up by his ghost in TFS and other characters realizing that they need their allies in a time of uncertainty.

    Honestly they could bring back the Dreadnaught but with alot more changes and story elements. Imagine instead if the Dreadnaught was changing, being pulled into Saturn, making it tear itself apart as it slips between reality and the Ascendant realm, and it's changing like its being Taken. Not only would this destination be similar but full of new alterations, but they can expand the destination to include something with plot significance. Maybe one of Xivu's war moons was sent to intercept, or one of Saturn's moons has become the new base for Xivu's hoard. Either way I would be fine with the Dreadnought, so long as that means a fresh experience AND a location that includes more than just the ship
