Vax: shaves Grog's beard.
Grog: of course you realize this means war.
With Laura going FULL WIFEY
“Half. A beard?” the simple anger in that statement was amazing lol
The mechanical pencil suffered his wrath.

"You have grown what is a rather majestic full chin beard."
And then Vax got an idea. An awful idea.
Vax'ildan got a wonderful awful idea.
Now I need to see someone draw Vax with a Grinch smile
I love how the description reads "to instantly grow a full beard" but having to grow it bit by bit led to so many good moments.
It was just being a good DM on his part. The item says "if you're capable of growing one". Goliath usually don't have facial hair at all.
(Females have hair sometimes thought)
@@bluebird8221 I've made it a personal quest to freak out as many of my characters with a goliath bartender with long hair hiding his eyes like a hentai protagonist
Only if they are capable of growing one. Goliaths cannot grow beards, hence why it took so long. Great DMing!
make the most macho Goliath capable of it, very slowly, with magic. excellent choice.
😂 Like when Vax shaved half of it off.
You could FEEL the anger in him when he says
_"Half_ a beard?"
Big burly man, with gray skin, bald head and glorious beard. I just realized that belt made Grog look like ps4 era Kratos.
Now i just imagine "BOY" in Grogs Voice...
That’s exactly what Grog looks like
oddly enough, I believe this predates the new Kratos.

Travis’ unadulterated joy when he learns Grog grew a full beard only for it to turn to pure rage at liam’s prank is amazing 😂
Their dynamic in a nutshell. 😂😂 Such pranks.
Vax and Vex had their quest to sort out their daddy issues, Percy had his quest to overthrow the Briarwoods and retake Whitestone, and Kayleth had her quest to complete the Aramente, but the greatest quest of them all was Grog's quest for a full and luscious beard!
But nobody did anything for Scanlan! They didn’t even know his mothers name

*Vax shaves Grog's beard*
Travis: and I took that personally
"Let's say I... Assume."
Woof. That is up there on the threat level of inter-party banter. Vax is lucky that Grog is pretty nice for a rage monster.
As a person who has only watched campaign 1 through highlights, I only knew about Vax shaving off grogs beard and wondered if it was serious enough to make Travis break a mechanical pencil. Now I understand the struggle Grog had to go through to grow it, and wonder how was Travis so collected when it happened.
It was a wonderful moment of critical rolls history
Because Travis Willingham is a phenomenal player that, in all the episodes of CR I've seen, one of the only players I've known who successfully and consistently can take what's happening in the game seriously, simultaneously without blaming the players for the behavior of their characters.
He always pays attention to everything his DM says, he interacts with the party in great ways, he's charismatic and I imagine a lot of fun to play DnD with, and on top of all that acts more mature than many I've played with would in situations like this. Not to mention he seems to *legitimately* be actively listening to the other player's actions and stories.
A lot of players default to thinking of themselves as the "main character". Travis is a phenomenal player largely because, as far as I've seen anyway, he seems to *never* have that mentality. He's always aware he's part of a whole.
All the CR cast are very good at at least one aspect of being a player, even if they're weak in others. Of everyone at the table, Travis always seems to be the most respectful and most genuinely interested in the party. Not that the others aren't, I just think Travis goes above and beyond as a player. Sure, Vax had a lot of one-on-one moments with other characters, but Travis as a player seems to always be interested in anything that happens with his party members, and as a DM, I would say that's a rare and highly treasured trait.
@@MarkEdwardRom I don't honestly see it as a wonderful moment. I feel like Liam was just being a dick.
@@martinbanner5628 ya me too, it makes me dislike him even though i like him
@@martinbanner5628 but wasn't that like Vax and Grog's thing? Being dicks to eachother
"I'VE. GOT. A. BEARD!" -Grog "Legend of Vox Machina"
Oh man. I saw the bit with Vax shaving it before, and I knew Travis was ticked. I did not know the long, desperate journey that fueled that rage.
For me it was 20 minutes. For Travis and crew it was 4 months.
😂 Those two were such dicks to each other.
I figured Grog's beard had some fun history in the campaign given how excited he got in the show, but I wasn't expecting this rollercoaster of insanity.
I love how Matt's throwaway item became Grog's reason to wake up in the morning
Group: We should give it to the member who can use it to its fullest capabilities
Travis: I wanna grow a fucking beard
You are a lucky woman Laura. Travis is a keeper
It was very good for a barbarian tho, it increases his AC by 1 because of unarmored defense

My god, life imitates art in a big way with this one.
In Norse Mythology, one of the better known myths is about Loki getting drunk and shaving off the golden hair or Sif (Thor's wife) while she sleeps, as a hilarious goof.
When Sif awaken, Sif is devastated. (Her hair was sort of a literal manifestation of her powers over fertility and the harvest)
When Thor awaken, his fury wakes with him.
And much like Grog, he utters a single word though clenched teeth:
"...Loki"
Then, and sadly, here's where the stories diverge; he breaks Lokis arm in three places, and promise that he will break every single bone in his body, then heal him and do it again the next day, every day ad infinitum, unless he can somehow procure a new head of perfect golden hair for his wife. Loki is more than happy to accomplish this, through dwarven shenaneganery.
grog also has a hammer that he can throw and returns to him, it doesn't have any lightning powers unfortunately but close enough
He did have a lightning javelin! But he didn’t use it often. Thor’s voice actor subconsciously channeling the god of thunder into his dnd haha
Well, I guess that explains the origin of the belt then, perhaps it was fated to watch history repeat itself.
@@Theminecraftian772 Funny you mention that! Thor needed a magic belt and gauntlets to use Mjolnir. In 5e, there is a legendary warhammer that requires the wielder to be attuned to both a belt of giant strength and gauntlets of ogre power in order to fully use its powers.
I had flashbacks to this very myth when the shaving happened. I knew there would only be one way it could go.
I love how pissed Laura gets when Vax shaves Grog's beard
He was literally just idly sitting there until the part about the beard was mentioned.
I love how all fan art of grog I’ve seen has him with full face majestic beard
Keyleth: "50% chance of growing a beard"
Grog: >JAW DROP
15:00 the smile just drops from Travis' face as he realizes what Liams about to do
laura getting real mad about liam fake shaving travis’ fake beard is so funny to me
The rage travis had when he broke the mechanical pencil.
The party: It'll get his CON up to 20
Grog: Fuck Dat I just wanna beard!
The anger in his vocie, the bend of the pencil; Travis was ready for blood
5:13 Something about Ashley and Travis immediately syncing up - just all the feels!
God
I kinda miss these moments
The beard checks were such a hype moment.
Also the fight with the orc guy was pretty freaking epic.
Ah C1...
Nostalgic enough to make me miss it, but not so much to make me go through all of it again
the memes were fun and the overarcing story was interesting, but those are the only things that carried it.
Noone knew what they were doing, the fight with the orc guy pretty much proved that.
After i finish it and go through all of C2 again, I’ll probably watch everything again after Tiberius leaves despite the beard stuff happening when he’s still there

If Grog somehow doesn't get the chance to grow a beard in Legend of Vox Machina season 2, we riot.
How just half of it?
"Good news everyone!"
Eh, Good news, everyone!
Thanks from the future for manifesting this.
😏 This aged well.
He rolled a 99 and a 100 on his beard checks. Kind of wild.
A 99 and two 100s, actually. Truly wild, like Matt said.
He gets so excited about his beard check and it’s so wonderful.
Vax: Shaves half the beard.
Raven Queen: Huh, that thread isn't supposed to be there.
I love how it just grows tiny bit by tiny bit and grows a bit better each time it’s “shaved” like reality.
It's so weird seeing Travis without his beard in these early episodes.
I love how Travis actually shaved to endure the process of growing a beard as Grog.
Oh LIAM! I never realised how heinous that prank was until now!!
By shaving it you ruin all the effort, and make them start from square one, but by shaving only half, it has the same outcome but it also makes them half to put down the other side.
@@jb-wc1hx was a groomsman at my buddies wedding. i had a nice 3- 4 inch or so long full beard and a trimmed mustache. woke up early to him trimming a chunk out of my beard on my chin. glared at him told him to fix it. he was shitting bricks. im also 6'3'' wasn't calm.
his wife shaved his right eyebrow 1.5 months after their marriage. after she heard what he did lol.
@@jb-wc1hx Like with slashing tyres
Slash all of them, and insurance covers it
Slash 2 or 3, and they have to pay for it themselves
He broke a pencil because of that prank OMG LOL!
I mean, the guy wanted to grow a beard for his hairless character. As the proud owner of a beard (now much thicker than in the pfp i still use out of laziness) i get it. If someone touched my beard, which is months of grooming and growing without magic, I'd be irritated. Grog has a low tolerance for things, as seen with the hill giant drinking his ale.
Not just a pencil. A Mechanical Pencil.
Seeing percy's comment at the time was funny but after knowing what he has been through that's some beautiful foreshadowing
I love that there are 20min of pure beard content
Grog's beard journey is truly glorious and inspirational. The goliath facial hair struggle is real
Public service announcement: if the chance is 50%, you can just flip a coin.
during the shaving scene with vax all i can think of if this very specific piece of fanart where bearded grog is nestled in his bed and then the frame switches to underlit vax holding a shaving cream brush and a razor with the most amused smug look on his face. environmental storytelling at its best
Sadly, the description actually gives the stipulation, "if you're capable of growing one" which means it shouldn't work on Grog, but Matt let him, so that is cool.
Fuck that restriction. I can't think of a single instance where it wouldn't be funnier to let the characters grow beards. Male Goliath? Check. Vex? Check. Little goblin girl? Check.
Besides. This way, it doesn't ruin the immersion by giving the item some kind of meta ability to tell whether the wearer _should_ have a beard - instead, it says _fuck that_ and gives them a beard! I think that's the way magic should be. 🙂
@@Drekromancer 100%, rule #1 about D&D is that the rules are optional. It makes for a better story and a funnier moment to allow someone to grow a majestic beard even if they can't normally.
That is why Matt made him roll to grow a beard slowly, as by RAW it would grow a full beard overnight.
@@philosophicaljay3449 I think the rolls where just because it's a 50% chance over night regardless. He just made extra rolls
Yea, and as a prank let's shave half of it off.
No stats no nothing... Travis: "I want to grow a beard"
I'm SO happy they kept that scene on Vox Machina series
6:35 oh god that DM smile
Travis as grog: rolls multiple 100’s
Travis as chetney: I’ll never roll a 100
Arcane Bearded Goliath should have been a new sub race spawned by Grog
like for Goliath sorcerers or some shit
8:20 it was at this point Travis started thinking up Fjord
Love that this is getting animated! Grog looks so happy!
Imagine if he were able to grow more hair the morning of the Great Shave Incident... He'd have bristles on one half, and a longer beard on the other lol. He'd need a good trim to fix it haha
This whole time.....THIS WHOLE TIME! I thought Grog was just homebrewed a beard for his Goliath, or wasn't actually a Goliath.
I so hope this gets animated, now that grog has the belt and beard
we got it is animated
WHO WOULD HAVE FORSEEN THAT IT BECAME GROG'S MOST IMPORTANT ITEM
Taliesin's comment at 8:20 hits way to close to home

Thanks! I’m so glad you enjoy them!
Grog straight up Looks Like Kratos to me when he got his beard.
Nah, Kratos looks like Grog, since he got the beard first. Kratos got his 3 years after Grog did
In the moment that he wakes up with half a beard, if I was playing grog, I’d immediately go into a rage and start charging Vax.
Grog and his beard. Still a better love story than twilight 😂😂😂
Accurate
Truly, the Saga of the Beard deserves its own Amazon Prime series.
We need that meme of the man holding his hand up against the +2 to con, and bonus to persuasion towards Dwarves. Then he points at "full beard."
"It looks nice." Anyone else feel that one. 👀
Just finished season 2 of the show and Grog with a beard is epic.
I just came back to this and totally forgot that Travis has actually rolled Trip Zeros before. Man.... Chetney would be dead. lol
I had a character who improperly attuned to a belt of dwarven kind and as a result, even after he took it off, his facial hair still grew in significantly faster
The fact the scene with vax shaving half of grog's beard isn't in the animated show disappointed me, it was too good to not put in it
16:25
straight up became rise kujikawa to ask vax why he's evil.
Aw man how nostalgic. I never have time to watch critical role anymore as I always work closing shift. Damn I miss these guys.
I've never had a chance before today to ever watch the show. Just always had to listen to the podcast... Totally forgot about the beard. Vax and Grog have been my favorite just for this moment..
Oh....NOW I understand that part of the show....
2:55
Aww, should have zoomed in on Travis’s face when he said “oh crap” for dramatic effect! 😝
Actually Taliesin raises a fair point, can you pass it around and get a full party of beardy warriors?
Travis: Yeah yeah, carisma, dwarves, blah blah blah….-
Then he heard the beard thing and it was all he needed to hear.
would have been funny for him to roll a 10 after getting the beard shaved off to then do the cartoon thing where he flexes and the beard grows back in
god the storytelling, this is a rolercoster
This is the joy of D&D that so many people don't understand. Like this isn't world changing, but it's amazing.
Grog went through a lot of fire to finally grow that beard....and then Vax fucked it up for him.
