I remember this kit from back in the early '90s, back then it was moulded in silver plastic and the decals were the correct colours, if I remember correctly it was the only mass produced model of a bubble canopied Spitfire on the market, mind you back then you were severely limited in which Spitfire marks you could buy. As to why you would buy this kit nowadays, it appears that with Eduard discontinuing the bubble canopy Mk.XVI they used to do this Heller kit appears to be your only option.

I nearly bought this kit back in the day. I'm pleased I waited and got the much newer Eduard one instead! Great video. +1 new subscriber 😀👍

Nice entertaining video - I'm far more likely to watch a build video than an unboxing so that twist was a nice addition.

@docbrownscalemodels I personally prefer build videos as well. Unboxings do give an option for audience participation before a build though.

2 pounds for spare parts? About right for 72nd Spitty cuz we know Tiger Moths are priceless 😬

Did you do the mk1 / mk2 as well?? I would probably give it a shot at a couple of quid!

One pound / spitfire is a good deal, but yeah, unless this is the only Mk XVI on the market I don’t see why you would go for this kit. Turned out nicely nevertheless

Not only is the colour of the decals bad, the font of the letters is completely wrong. How is the G anything like the one on the box art.

I bought the Heller kit purely because I wanted a Mk XVI. It only had the decals in that ridiculous green so I used them. What I should have done was to buy a sheet of aftermarket RAF squadron codes but I didn't think of that at the time. I might just repaint it and put the correct letters on. I sometimes buy started/damaged kits from ebay, it's a (usually) good way of getting hold of difficult to find models.

For £2 I'd go for it. I would have also used the green decals just for the hell of it.

Against my good sense, I’m always tempted by old kits in the bargain bin.
I similarly purchased an old second-hand Revell 1/72 Sikorsky H34G kit and when I got it home I realized there were two kits plus aftermarket decals in the box.

For £2, and even missing parts it would be a great deal for a kit-bash kit to build something sci-fi or "what if" type of model.

I'll just say something, it hurt me a lot that you broke Fujimi's spitfire, especially since it's such an old model and hard to find today. It could still be repaired with an extra propeller blade for a flying diorama or in the current state crashed and forgotten somewhere in England, I think that old models should never be broken there are always options or someone willing to buy it and give it a use

My sentiments exactly. In my youth I busted up a few kits that I would really like to get again but can't find or are now way too expensive, I really regret breaking them up or chucking them out. Some kid out there would have given a weeks pocket-money for that Fujimi Spit !

@alanamato9382 I understand. For me there are many kits that have sentimental value, but I have once again run out of display space for models and this one had been broken in a box for a number of years.
Was I ever going to repair it? No.
Do I have other silver Spitfires? Yes.
I have to draw a line somewhere and broken models that look rubbish to me have to make way for new ones.

built this kit some years ago, replaced the bright green DG * E decals (ironically I pronounce that as dodgy!) with a full aftermarket set that also had decals for the other silver one you built here, nice as I still have another one from an airfix box set called 90 years of the spitfire (I think) another mistake on this kit is that the instructions call for the interior be painted in humbrol 87, a blue/grey, which I believe is a typo and should be 78, and yes, it was only after I had painted it out in 87 I thought to myself hang on a minute, this ain't right!

@@philsmodelmaking2260 I didn't even notice that! I just default paint Spitfires in RAF interior grey-green.
I did contemplate turning this I to a Belgian Spitfire as the real DG E went on loan to the Belgians after the war, but I'd actually rather just get a better kit!
