Dave, I have not played the viola in over 10 years. My wife just bought me one for my birthday and I am trying to relearn things. Please help as I miss the days of playing this lovely instrument..... yeah for viola's :)
Thanks so much! I'm in the middle of doing my Aural Skills homework online and the publishers deviously decided to throw some exercises in alto clef at me. I've been playing piano for fourteen years, but had never had a reason to read in alto clef and was quite baffled. Thanks again! It was very helpful!
Violins definitely are as awesome as the violins. My favorite uses of the viola in orchestral music is probably Mozart's 40th and then how Prokofiev uses them in the Dance of the Knights to create a portamento effect.
Thank you! This video was very informative. I play the flute currently, and I might take viola lessons this summer. It's gonna take some getting used to, but it was helpful so thank you!
Well yes, but when learning a new clef you should strive to be able to identify the notes for what they are in the clef instead of thinking, “well, it’s shifted 1 space down from treble clef”
I am learning violin, my brother plays the viola (and the cello) it's worth knowing this, especially if I ever wanted to compose something to be played on the viola or mandola maybe? Do any other instruments use this as their primary clef? I know it CAN be used for the cello, though the tenor clef might be more common for the mid range, though as he primarily plays the viola (and no he didn't ever want to play violin, he just liked the viola, nothing wrong with that, don't get the jokes, it's a lovely instrument!) it might be more comfortable for him. Though if you can identify G4, C4 or F3 (in the absence of any markers indicating a different octave) you should be able to figure it out, even if subconsciously by the interval from the the line the clef is resting on.
Thanks so much. Trying to teach myself viola (I took it in school for half a year years ago) and this will be helpful. At some point I want to be able to transpose guitar to viola so learning music theory is first. I never learned it originally when I was learning viola or guitar
Why don't we take a page out of piano teachers' books and use mnemonics to remember the notes? GBDF could be Good Boys Do Fine, kinda like treble lines. And I haven't found a mnemonic for alto spaces, but I'm thinking of something like Father Anthony Cared for Every Girl for FACEG.
Great videos, I am learning a lot. I did a search through your channel, but I couldn't find a video that differentiates musical terms that are similar. I would love to know the difference between a key and a scale, or between timbre, tone, texture, and color. What about rhythm, beat, and time (like a song being in 4/4 time)? What are the differences between harmony and chords? What about notes and pitches? What makes something melodic, and something else atonal? Also, could you explain why sharps and flats exist? Why not just use a straight lettering system? How many scales exist, how many keys? Can any set of notes be a scale? Thanks a lot!
I played viola for three years then stopped cuz I couldnt rent it any longer. Now I play guitar. So I've learned multiple clefts I understood the alto clef the easiest though.
Okay, so I'm a violinist and I really like the deep and dark sound of the cello/viola, but since I dont want to deal with the hassle of new fingerings of the cello (also really expensive, dang) I'm going to try viola. How would I read viola music? The alto clef makes sense, but would the middle line (c) be played on second finger A? probably not. Is it a first finger D? Someone, please tell me atleast one note and where it is on the viola so I can make some sense of this. My violin mind doesn't want to cooperate with me, lol
+Nadaa Koubaa The viola strings are set up as if you took the E string off a violin and added a C string as the lowest string. C, G, D, A are the strings, all of which are between the bars in the alto clef. Middle C is the second finger on the A string, just as it is on the violin. The trick with the alto clef is in learning to recognize that note when it is written. Takes practice. Good luck.
+Zale Dalen +Zale Dalen oops. I just check that against the piano. Second finger on the A string gives you high C. To get middle C you need your third finger on the G string. Sorry about that.
I still don´t really understand the purpose of how the piano looks like anyway and why there isn´t a space for every pitch in the notation anyway. It would still be easier to visualize how it sounded like even if just 8 of the 12 spaces were used for every key/mode. The key buttons could still be called C#/Dflat, D, D#/Eflat etc in the same order anyway even if every other key button was white and every other was black. These particular places for calling a pitch a letter plus adding that it´s sharp or flat of course just make complete sense in keys with C as the first scale degree. But I get now why this particular order of calling buttons sharps and flats is needed. If all of these letters are going to appear in all keys/modes.
alto clef is used for mainly viola not piano just think of it as a normal treble clef but each note looks 1 note lower on the staff for example f on a alto clef looks like e on a treble clef both e's are played the same but read differently
I play the viola and the reason I'm watching this video is so that I can start playing the violin instead . . . the viola is a very unrecognized instrument.
Jokes on you, I am watching this so I can learn the viola audition piece in a week and show that even there most mediocre violinist is better than the best violist
I'm a Violist, I love the alto clef.
Same I love my viola
I'm a violist and the violonists don't like me and my clef and my instrument...
Alto is weird, i don't like reading it cuz I am a cello. but ok
I love my viola and btw I hate that people say that viola is a rip off violin
I really respect you guys, violists. But seeing this gathering of violist just reminds me of TwoSetViolin and their viola jokes :D
Here is a violin joke:
Why are Viola jokes usually short? So violinists can understand them.
Tris1014 Excellent! :)

oof
Why is viola bigger than the violin?

So is alto clef just treble but shifted down 1 note?
Matt Weiman and an octave
I'M NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO THOUGHT OF THIS AYY.
@@camtothemax Dont forget register u have the clarinet too u know
I think it's shifted down 6 notes because B is in the middle on the treble clef, and C is in the middle on the alto clef, and B is 6 notes above C.
Well yes, but when learning a new clef you should strive to be able to identify the notes for what they are in the clef instead of thinking, “well, it’s shifted 1 space down from treble clef”

I wish this video included pitches along with introducing this clef, since I think that would help with ear training and sight reading.
fantastic tutorial!
Great video. Right to the point, valuable info. Thank you.
For the record, I can play fast I play guitar. I chose the viola because it fits me so much better, I'm 6'4" and have big fingers

Brilliant video, great presentation, thank you so much! :D
I keep seeing the Alto Clef for Euphonium and Trombone music
Yay my clef is known!
The thing that confused me the most about the alto clef was that it could also be called a tenor clef. Long story short I now understand why it is.
That's good. It always helps to understand something a little better
2:15 Low brass, strong bass?
1:50 Viola is just a travel size cello.
I dunno about viola but I see a lot of cool bassoon parts in alto clef

Haha the part you said violist are slower, I’m a violist and the fastest one in 8th grade
Tenor clef is awesome too
this is goated for tenor sax
it’s a good thing i’ll never have to play alto clef as a cellist
hah, that’s funny.
The 13 dislikes were violinists(I’m a violinist but I liked the video).
Violist will be able to play and hear longer than violinists. Every time I play the E string, my ears doesn't exist.
Say that again. Just kidding my E string sound like a cat died
