As a Cassiopeia fan for more than 16 years, I'm so happy that his solo got a lot of attention. Because I know their era has passed and many young Kpop fans don't how great TVXQ are. So I am really surprised and happy for him.

Changmin wrote the lyrics for Devil. He said it was about the moments at night, when you're about to sleep but your brain reminds you of your regrets. So the Devil is your regrets that haunts you late at night. So it alludes to battling mental issues.

Yess changmin is such a great vocalists. This is why I recommended *Before U Go* by TVXQ!!! That song is a vocal r&b flex!!!
The beginning was giving me plantation movie humming vibe. So soulful. I was feeling my ancestors and then the Korean came in and I gasped. It’s quite unique. I actually liked it.
Yes...Max is SM royalty...2nd gen, along with his partner Yunho, TVXQ's superb duo, after the original TVXQ split up. Max and Yunho still got them vocals, they in their 30s, but in their prime...mentors to Exo at SM...Yunho also has his own solo work. I wish they'd come together again. One day check out TVXQ's "Spellbound", a great song and mv by the duo.💙🌺
They released a full album and were touring in Japan before Cornucopia-19 cut that short, so check out their new Japanese stuff if you need a TVXQ fix. Changmin also released a mini album there last month, so I guess he has evolved past the need for sleep, lol.

There's a vocal coach/producer at SM named Yoo Young-Jin, and it sounds like he also coached Max Changmin. That's Yoo Young-Jin's vocal style.

His eyes at the end represent his winning over the devil. As in, I'm stronger than the devil. Also did you notice, the form of the rock that lifted and fell back to the ground broken was HIS face before his triumph over his hardships. (Yunho and Max talk about this during a reaction video with Yunho)

NCT U's Boss was filmed in an old Soviet era building somewhere in Ukraine, while Devil was shot on a soundstage in Seoul (the exterior/forest scenes ofc were outside).

I think the term you're looking for, whether it's politically correct or not these days, is either slave narrative or spiritual. Slave narrative is most commonly used to describe literature, but lyricized music IS literature. This song definitely pulls musical inspirations from those as well as blues.
