    The McLaren F1 is still far and away my all-time favourite hypercar. A car built to be the ultimate road car and it certainly succeeded. Never before had a car been built with such a pure ideal, with every component designed and manufactured to be as light as possible, making a truly incredible road car that also proved itself around racetracks. Gordon Murray's latest looks to be a true successor to the F1 but it'll be this car that will still remain my number one.

    4:15 Steel brakes. Carbon/carbon was in F1 for a while, road applicable carbon ceramic tech was in its infancy. Murray mentioned those and said that they weren't really ready for a nice road experience when the F1 was built. Again, his point was to build the best road car in the world then, not the best racing car. It just happened it was so damn good it made a great racing car with only a few modifications. The Enzo is 10 years newer and by then the carbon ceramic brakes were much further developed, indeed the Enzo was the first road car to use them.

    • @jamesengland7461
      @jamesengland7461 4 года назад +5

      I think his comparison to the Enzo brakes was nonsense for the very reasons you mention

    • @cleverusernamecl5532
      @cleverusernamecl5532 4 года назад +2

      The 2000 Mercedes-Benz CL 55 AMG F1 Edition was the first I believe. Also the 996 911 GT2 had carbon ceramics in 2001, both predating the Enzo.

    • @sparkycalledmarky
      @sparkycalledmarky 3 года назад

      I think McLaren probably had a ceramic brake upgrade pack at some point, with this car being retrofitted (note there's none of the usual squealing the F1's steel brakes are renowned for). Still, the whole system wasn't designed for ceramics, so it's no surprise they're not up to par with a much newer car that has a braking system designed with ceramic discs in mind.

    • @BlatentlyFakeName
      @BlatentlyFakeName 3 года назад

      They aren't the best for road use as you can't keep them hot enough. A lot of people take them off supercars and fit steels.

    • @pgr3290
      @pgr3290 3 года назад

      @@BlatentlyFakeName Early carbon brakes had narrow and high temperature operating windows, plus they were enormously expensive which is why they were rare and only $500k exotica. Advances in the materials mean they are now slightly more common and usable on the road with cold stops, and somewhat cheaper than 20 years ago. Everything is relative though as they are still many times more costly than steel. Several sub $100k cars use them or have them as options, for example various Porsche, BMW and Mercedes models have offered them as options for several years now. They can put used buyers off although they typically last quite a long time. Money is the primary reason they get replaced. Many people convert back to steel when it is time for maybe 1/4th the cost.

      @@sparky4878 true. I was watching a chris harris clip where he was looking at porsche gt products with the gt program guy, he remarked it cost a relatively huge amount to develop unique side lights for the 997.2 gt3 (I think) which were universally compliant with all sales markets. Thats where the development cost lies on parts barely anyone will ever appreciate.

      "Aston Martin also looks very outdated" ................... Something that looks good, always looks good. Only idiots look for "fashionable cars". Stick to clothing.
