Yeah I like the mechanical backdrop behind the band. I'm sure there was guy behind it, turning it by hand, LOL. And it was probably bright dayglo colors, which you can't see in B&W....Now it would be CGI - Times are different, not necessarily better....

SO true. Geezer also did a lot of work on that bass that makes very little sense to me, and I'm a gigging bass player myself. It's great, though. Those little runs, the galloping and the dissonant verse stops ... so good.

Man the straight people of the world tried to beat down Sabbath over and over again, every chance they had. Where are those folks now? Their music is immortal. The straw that broke them down was when Ozzy and Sharon were guest of George Bush at a fundraiser in 2002. What's beautiful is they bumping elbows with the very people who cursed them, Black Sabbath, then Ozzy solo.

Fun fact about this song and the album it's on. So the album was pretty much completed and they were going to call it War Pigs. But the label wanted one more song, something that would "hook" people. So Tony Iommi came up with the riff and the group quickly recorded the song and that became the title track. But it was too late to change the album cover, which is why it looks like War Pigs would have been a more fitting title. Paranoid though turned out to be one of their biggest hits and most recognizable songs. When you hear those opening chords, there's no choice but to turn it way up!

Paranoid was the first song I think I heard by Black Sabbath back in those days. This album and Deep Purple in Rock got famous (among my friends in Sweden) about simultanously. Slightly after Led Zeppelin II. Those three albums formed "hard rock" to us. There was some rock program on radio 2-3 hours a week - and vinyl albums which were expensive for us young people. Very different from today when you can listen to anything anytime. There was also a significant generation gap. There were almost nobody aged >20 interested. Elvis and Beatles was for young people and parents were worried. (Check F Zappa's comments on music industry!) Anyway, there are older albums and groups, but these three albums marked the start of something different for many people (while I myself turned more to Hendrix, Zappa, Jethro Tull etc.)

Tony Iommi: the left-handed grandfather of heavy metal guitar. It seems like all the greatest guitarists are southpaws, from Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix out of Seattle, Washington to Paul McCartney and Tony Iommi from across the pond. Paul McCartney knows how to play more than 50 different musical instruments, which is unheard of for a left-handed musician. His former bandmate Ringo Starr is also a lefty but he plays a right-handed drum kit, which is what gives him such a distinctive sound.

Tony chopped off the ends of two of his fingers in a kick-press accident at work. He tuned his guitar down, because, less tension on the strings allowed him to play with less pain. So, if Tony had not chopped off his fingers, metal as we know it may never have happened.

And after over 4 decades of listening to him play, I just realized he's left handed.

This album was originally named after another song, War Pig. Their label didn't want to release the album with that name for fear of backlash so the new name they chose was Paranoid.
