    A ha's "ephemeral" music has been shown to survive the test of time. Take on me will always make me feel great when ever I hear it. Their second album Scoundrel Days had amazing adventurous songs on it. When they started again in the new century they did some even more amazing albums. The music , yes , is very synth-y 80's...but for the most part has stood the test of time. Particularly the lyrics. If you consider how the songs were rearranged musically for the fairly recent unplugged album , the songs are quite beautiful and that is timeless. Especially considering Morten's voice is still pretty damn incredible.

    there´s a kind of distance between the interviewer and the guys. a-ha wanted to be a serious band and not only the teenie idols which was a picture that was created by take on me... but take on me will always be a part of music history because of its postmodern approach, the connection between virtuality and reality. it´s not only a comic strip showing young men, it´s a kind of art.

    This, ladies and gentlemen, is why music artists absolutely hate giving some interviews. Those fucking interviewers have no idea what it means for a musician to make music, let alone share their work with the public. You put your heart and soul into your work, you're proud of it, full of confidence, and the next thing you know you're getting screwed by an interviewer. That's absolutely disrespectful!

    • @ahkkariq7406
      @ahkkariq7406 2 года назад

      In the music industry, they were, and they knew. We all knew, and they still are. What they also knew was that Norway at that time had found oil off the coast, which made oil our most valuable exports. At least if money counts as value.

  • @Chimera_V7

    Even though I didn't like the interviewer because of the abrasive way he put his questions, I still enjoyed this because he did get them to open up and prove to the naysayers that they have more substance than fluff. The usual shallow questions were what perpetuated the "ephemeral" stuff which they admitted to have encouraged but they were hoping to neutralize that as they grow into their music while acknowledging the impact it had to their success. When Morten said "the music has to move me no matter what happens to it", that was beautiful because their music ended up moving a lot of people.

    I think that the main problem with a-ha decreasing in popularity after Take On Me was their looks/appearance. And by that I mean that they were always seen as a band of handsome boys/men and their music was not taken so much seriously as other rock bands with more trashy styled members, such as Guns'n Roses etc. I honestly think that the lyrics and music of most of their songs are very deep, but kids were totally in love with the way Morten looked and they took over the audience, the teeny-bop.

    • @soxofthefox8590
      @soxofthefox8590 5 лет назад +8

      Actually the teeny bop (male and female) WERE the first audience, there was nothing to take over. It was literally us or nothing, at the start.
      And a-ha knew that, very well, so they catered to this and played the role.
      They just thought they could start that way and then move on, as the Beatles did.
      The audience was not wrong for them as such: such audiences grow up, gain understanding, infect their new friends, their boyfriends/ girlfriends and then their colleagues and children, ... it would have been a nice natural evolution. If we as fans could have kept our chins up and been proud. If a-ha could have been spared interviews such as these.
      But here you see the best example of what happened: the media caught them in that little belittling box of 'boys' band for teens' and kept them there, for years and years. They kept us fans hostage together with the band in that little box of idée fixe, as if over the years we collectively and individually learnt nothing, nor evolved, nor grew up even a bit. And they riled us for it. We resented that: a-ha ànd the fans, that image diminished us both, it poisoned our relationship on both ends.
      So what if we did appreciate the depth of the songs, noone recognized that, not in us. Even you do not, absurdly.
      For an a-ha fan in many European countries (luckily it was not a global phenomenon), by the end of the 80's , this was the choice:
      Either drop a-ha, or be ridiculed for being perceived as someone forever stuck at the age of 14.
      In the end, we had to break that media spell by walking away from it, we had to each gain our own credibility in the eyes of the world, before being able to return to each other. My hat off for those die-hard European fans who bit through all that crap and stuck with them till a-ha blew things up for themselves the first time. (In great part for the reasons mentioned here btw...)
      Frankly I myself had enough other crap on my plate already. ;-)
      .
