    As portuguese, it is very interesting to see a perspective from a foreigner discovering our country. And as someone from the North of PT, i am very pleased that you didn't felt for the typical trap of only major cities. If you ever need some local tips, feel free to hit me... There's probably still a lot of things to see here

      @@lostinreverie2183 to be honest I don't like to speculate in those kind of questions for several reasons. That at a lot of details that can influence the price dramatically that (as far as I remember) are not specified. For example, he says that is "close" To Lisbon but doesn't say in which "direction". For example, just by heart, I would say that the same house in Sesimbra costs at least twice/triple the same house in Azambuja. Also, he probably hired a lawyer, a "buying assistant", architect for the renovation (I prob would) which I also can't properly estimate the costs. My advice would be to keep an open mind and remind yourself that Portugal and Portuguese are heterogeneous meaning that, for better or worse, that are many different places, prices and environments available. A quick search on apps like idealista or imovirtual may help to understand the price ranges. 👊

      well, i am not so sure about modesty, or at least in some people , because i believe sometimes they are just afraid that others can copy not only the house in itself but also the things they have in their houses, so unfortunately i think that envy (maybe) is very evident in some people, or maybe they are just trying to protect themselves from thieves or from other people with bad intentions.

    I bought my dream home... the one I imagined during the pandemic in rural Southern Ecuador. I live in The Valley of Longevity surrounded by the beautiful Andes. I have just under 1/2 acre and a pool. It's my casa de luz, 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms & 2 terraces. About 1800 sq ft. It's absolutely beautiful and so peaceful here. I love it. It too was very affordable (under $250k)
    It's possible... ❤🙏

    • @zetsun0
      @zetsun0 Год назад +8

      260k is nowhere near affordable. Maybe for american salaries, but for Portuguese salaries a quarter of a mil is a pretty big house if you stay away from the city. And most Portuguese banks won't give you loans that big for a house. 100-150k tops, unless you make a buttload of money.

    • @joelstalcup2464

    im portuguese and im so jealous. this year i studied abroad in Northern Europe but I’ve decided to come back to Portugal, i gained a whole new appreciation for what I have back home, I miss the life and energy i was always surrounded with, and the warmth (both in the people and the weather ofc). Some people have told me I shouldn’t come back because of how much worse the economy is, politics are a huge mess rn, and that “it will be much harder or impossible to build a career here” but before moving I had a taste of what a good life here could be, so I know that coming back will be hard (since huge amount of young / go study abroad or immigrate and aren’t expected to come back, except for maybe vacation or eventually possibly for retirement, bcs the “quality of life is much better out there”) but I want to have a little faith in my little country, and the beautiful experiences it will give me :) (but don’t get me wrong i understand the reasons why people choose to immigrate, and I was also super decided on leaving the country ever since I was a kid) - but anyways my point is seeing your videos helped me a little to gain this new appreciation, seeing someone genuinely passionate about the small things and the culture is very heartwarming, and I get reminded of the good things of my life there! :)

      My experience was very similar, but in reverse. I was raised in the UK and moved to Spain. But after many years and an unfortunate personal loss, although I have nothing negative to say about spain, on my return to the UK I realised how diverse and great it really was.
      Has for different countries economies, weather etc, there will always be positives, negatives and huge differences in 'all' of them. And taking that into consideration, it is where 'you' feel at home, happy and at peace....and nothing else.
      I have also visited your beautiful country Portugal (1985 - 1994 and think it is an amazing place, and hopefully I will return and revisit to see all the changes since I was last there.

    The problem with old Portuguese houses is insulation, specially the roof and windows, you lose a lot of heat in the roof in the winter and spend tons of wood to heat the house. In summer very hot. You have to insulate the roof with modern materials. I have a house that I rebuild in Figueiró dos Vinhos, it’s fantastic you are close to Figueira da Foz Beach and have a lot of river beach near the house. The people, the green, the sea, the sun and the food …….
    Don’t go to the big city, go to the villages, more easy going

    I am Portuguese and I live in California, Santa Barbara county, which is not so different then central Portugal, but probably twice as expensive. I really miss my country and I would like to go back and be with my family. My grandparents left a house in a quiet little village in the country side near Viseu, and that's where I want to live. The house is very old but charming. Made of stacked stones, has a huge balcony with a view of the mountains, in the morning you can see the clouds inside the valley, it's breathtaking to eat breakfast looking at it. In the afternoon you can sit in the sun and enjoy the view as you tan. There is a wine cellar underneath, the adega. My grandfather made his own wine from his own little vineyard. There is a gazebo covered with a huge canape of grape vines. Kitchen has a big wood fireplace. And of course the bathroom has a bidet. I do worry about infrastructure, like internet, transportation, shopping, and I'd prefer not to use bottled gas. Here in Cali we have natural gas and it never runs out - unless you don't pay the bill. Also, we can order anything we need, and even to send it back is a pice of cake. But living in a village in Portugal, I do worry about conveniences and other things.

    The site I found most useful for listings is called Idealista Portugal. It is a clearing house for multiple agents. You can draw boundaries around a specific area for all the listings in that area or draw around the whole country and zoom in for each listing and its description. There are some amazing values compared to the US.

    Amazing house, not sure if anyone else has said this, but as a gasfitter, I would highly recommend you move your butane bottles to outside. you will notice on the top of the bottle opposite to the inlet there is an over pressure valve. in the hot summer as your butane turns from a liquid to a gas within the bottle, the pressure can build up within the bottle, so the bottle vents to stop it exploding. but this in turn vents butane into your house . because it is heavier than air, you may not smell it and will be mostly at floor level and can pool in low areas (like your wine store for instance). but other than that, amazing place.

      As of late Portugal has become too expensive to live in, plus new laws regarding taxes will get deep into retirees and peoples pockets, crazy taxes, rents are threw the roof, real estate getting sky high, how the heck are the locals dealing with this high cost of living now, because high cost locals seem getting fed up with foreigners living there now, truly crazy!! i remember the old Portugal!!

    Just subscribed, congratulations on your dream house! Recently, you have been making references to the best places to live in Portugal- especially at the end. I wonder if you think of making video about areas with high humidity and concentration of mosquitos. I mean "places to avoid because of those issues".

    Hey Dave! I’ve watched your videos from here in Canada, really enjoy them. My wife is from Portugal, it’s a rural town called Murteira, 45 minutes north of Lisbon in Cadaval. We’ve watched your videos racking our brain trying to figure out where you live, lol.
    Of course, you probably don’t want to reveal the exact town, but are you close to there? My wife was there until she was 8, were going back for a visit in July. So interested. Keep up the great work!

    Great house that you have already made into a fantastic home. Fantastic tour that gives a true flavor. I purchased an apt in Lisboa (which I am preparing to move to, finally) but my bet is that soon I will be looking to the other, quieter areas of Portugal so thanx for all of the recommendations.

    The house is super charming & the view looks amazing! I have been living in Portugal for about 3 months now and will be starting my house search soon. Looks like you found a great house, but the struggle to find something mold free is real! Just looking for a rental took me forever because the damp and mold issues are so pervasive. It is very difficult to find a house with good-quality insulation and a heat source plus ventilation that makes sense. I love love Portugal, but this problem is something to be aware of before you begin house shopping.

    • @jeanlundi2141
      @jeanlundi2141 Год назад

      Well it depends which part of Portugal you are in. This is not a country like a nodrid country where insulation is a matter of survival. And there are places in Portugal that are waaay drier than others (like Alentejo region away from the coast, for example).

      If humidity is an issue for you, you should look up at rammed earth houses called "taipa", they are an ecological and traditional way of construction in Portugal ;)

      As to usual mold, gaining the habit of opening the windows daily for cross ventilation, especially after showers/cookings, plus scrubbing/washing off the mold on the walls and ceilings with bleech does the trick for good long time :)

    Hey Dave. In the future you can exchange the butane water heater and stove for a heat pump and photovoltaic panels. In 5/6 years you have the return and you get the free domestic hot water heating. And depending on the size of the installation of the panels you can even heat the pool in winter! Cheers! nice house!

    The wooden pole propping up the chimney in the kitchen looks aesthetically unstable, could be quite stable structurally though. Cover the prop with an wooden prop with a larger diameter. Let this prop with larger diameter be eccentric to the old prop at its core. This will make sure that the space in between the kichen platform and the prop is not reduced. Great house, by the way.
