    Lusitania returns! Tonight is more chilled and laid back. We're going to explore the ship and with the help of a deck plan find out what rooms we're looking at as well as going places we didnt visit during the sinking video!

    Lusitania's Third class promenade deck is on C deck, not the poop deck, the same deck as the Third class lounge and smoking room. The promenade straddled the upper deck of the First class dining saloon, which led to some problems.
    In Lusitania's early days, some First class passengers complained that Third class passengers were looking through the windows, watching them eat.

    This is somehow like the what White Star Line had in the RMS Olympic (1911) They did had one of those 'NOTICE' signs hanging by the walls on B deck in this case, but it seems second class didn't had any railing or doors that would prevent them walking into the first class promenade areas there.

    That ship has such gorgeous lines. I love it. I loved the guided tour throughout the exterior of the ship. I learned quite a bit. As much as I like this ship, I do have to agree that the decks look cluttered compared to the Olympic class. It's like Cunard just wanted to throw bits and bobs everywhere, while White Star was a bit more pragmatic with their design. After watching this, it makes me want to hunt down one of the 1/350 scale model kits of this ship floating around and finally put one together. It's been on my bucket list for years, as well as doing another 1/350 Titanic. I still have the 1/350 Titanic I did as a kid, but it don't look pretty. lol I'm not sure what to do with it.

    The Lusitania is taught a lot in American school just because it caused America to join the war. But it’s more than that. If I were a teacher, I would create a maritime disaster class. I would have students play this game and Honor and Glory. What better way to learn about a disaster by being there yourself?

    So why is there usually an enclosed wheelhouse behind the bridge on most of these classical liners? I understand that steering is mostly done with a compass but it just comes accross as inefficient to me.

    • @Spammals
      @Spammals  5 лет назад +2

      I don't have a fancy pants answer to your question but I would say considering the older liners had open bridges exposed to the elements it's likely a good idea to have a weatherproof area. :)

    Yeah, the curved forward Superstructure seems to be a signature of Cunard liners. You see it with the Lusitania and Mauretania, you see it on the Queen Mary, Elizabeth/2, and the Queen Mary 2. Aquitania had it... But it's remarkably flat in comparison. Given how she was built in response to the Olympic-Class, I have to wonder if Lord Brown ISN'T her father, and in fact she is the result of illicit relations between Madam Cunard and Lord Harland-Wolff.

    • @sockjim9016
      @sockjim9016 4 года назад

      During WW2 the British repeatedly hit the wreck with depth charges. People were getting better at refloating and salvaging shipwrecks in shallow water and the British didn’t want the Germans trying that with Lusitania, so they just went and mangled her so any parts would be essentially useless. I believe the bow is still recognizable and you can apparently still read Lusitania’s name, but aside from that she’s a sorry sight. Better that than being in the hands of the Nazis though
