- A 5th episode of my Dr Vstrom video series about the Oil & Oil filter change on a DL650 Vstrom L0. Although a simple task, it is yet a most vital one that in my opinion has to be performed whenever the engine asks for it. Thus depending on the bike, the environment & the way you ride, the replacement interval might vary.
Be sure to study the temperature & oil viscosity chart of the manual & depending on the temperature range in your area pick the appropriate oil. The colder the area the thinner the oil has to be and the opposite.
The tutorial demonstrates on my DL 650 Vstrom L0 model but the steps are applicable to the entire Vstrom family and any other bike out there, so enjoy.

You should check the diagram in your vstrom manual and the temperature ranges in the area where you drive. Then, after knowing the temperatures you can select the oil (eg 10W40, 20W50, etc). My brand is Belray but its only my choice

I always replace the crush washer on the drain plug and I mark the outside of the filter wrench rather than the filter since I need to use the oil filter wrench to turn the filter two complete turns. Thank you for the excellent videos on a superb bike.

I give the new filter some new oil internally before fitting.
Obviously can't fill it but just a little saves a few seconds of the engine running 'dry' before the oil pressure builds.

That really depends more on the following factors:
1. How you ride. If you are more of a conservative rider (low revs) or really push the engine.
2. The type of oil you use, ie SAE 20 W is good for high temperatures but not for cold ones
3. The quality of the oil you use
4.The oil color, if it looks black maybe its time
In General I change them every 4000 Km with an oil filter but you can leave them on the bike up to 6000Km like Suzuki says as long as their color looks ok.

Is stuff like maintenance (brakes, fluids, cables etc) and things like suspension adjustment or repairs the same on a 1000 vs 650?
Yes many things are either 100% common or very close. Please refer to my newest video for oil change. There are usually updated versions

I have been asked before about that. I do not do anything special really. The only thing I can think of is that when that place gets dirty I clean it with a water wet wipe. I also wear the engine guard and my bike is always parked in the basement garage which is a completely closed room. Hope that helps :) .
I know that people clean the pipes with Harpic cleaning products for the bathroom, www.rb.com/brands/harpic/
but there was no need for me to do so until now.

Hi doc, I’m a nurse looking for some direction. (I really am) I have the oil leak from the socket cover symptoms. I’m looking for the cheapest way to get it sorted, do you know which is the common seal to leak and is there any chance of doing a tutorial video of the area cheers rich

Hi Chris, I think its Gasket (12.1x16.2x3.7) but you can do 2 things. Either search for a store that sells vstrom parts and they will have them there also mentioning the size or if you are planing to replace the one you have, take the bolt and go to a store to buy one that fits the bolt.

Just came across your videos. They are a big help. Do you change the oil every 3000 miles? I ride 90% roads 10% dirt roads.
Thanks. It all depends on many things such as the age of your bike, how well the engine breaking period was, the temperatures of your location, your driving style and the type/quality of the oil but if you dont mind the cost you can change it around there. It also wont hurt if you keep them a bit longer.
I have a 2014 vstrom. I only drive about 500 miles a season. Stored inside house in winter. How often would you think I need to change oil?
Hello, it depends on how long the season is. How many months and how are these miles splitted? Evenly or not? If the motorcycle sits for long periods unused and if you only do very short distances, then water will eventually accumulate in the oil and the oil will even break down faster. Therefore, its best to change it. Thus said cost wise, it might be best to get a cheaper oil that is still within specs and change it more often. However, oil is not your biggest problem. Your biggest problem is fuel especially since now gasoline has a high % of ethanol that makes a lot of damage if it stays in the system and is not fresh. Then its also the break fluid and the coolant. These two also cause problems, cause their chemicals break down and 1st one will break your abs pump (very expensive to replace). The second will clog your coolant system. Thus said a motorcycle is best preserved if used. Gasoline can stay unused if you put a stabilizer perhaps for 6 months without causing damage. Oil should be changed every year at least. The other fluids should be changed every 1,5 years if being unused. Hope that helps.

Gerald Magdaong only If the oil filter codes are the same. For Vstrom and other suzuki bikes the code is 16510-07J00.

Do you ever pre-fill the new oil filter before installing it?
Why is 2800 ml stamped on the engine case?
jim snow the horizontal position of the filter makes it not possible to pre-fill as oil will come out while putting the filter. It does not say 2800 but 2300. There is a newer video as well in my channel which provides even more info.

You can find this online in many motorcycle shops including amazon. Make sure to buy the one with the long leg so it can get more accurate readings

Hey man,I'm about to replace the oil on my V strom. I used motul semi-synthetic the last time, but i found cheaper oil from Ipone. I'm thinking: oil is oil, if it's the right one it should be fine. The molul says something about esther, ipone doesn't. They are both 10W40 motorcycle oils. Should I go for the ipone?

Cup type filter wrench with 3/8" socket.
Oil Filter tool dimensions:- 68mm internal diameter with 14 Flutes.

Γενικά η εμπειρία έχει δείξει ότι ποτέ φιλτρο της εταιρείας δεν εμφάνισε πρόβλημα ροής.
Αντίθετα, προϊόντα από άλλες εταιρείες είχαν θέματα. Το racing μην το πιστεύεις, είναι
Καθαρά θέμα marketing.
Το γνήσιο φιλτρο κάνει τέλεια την δουλειά του και μπορείς να το βρεις γύρω στα 10 ευρώ.
Εγώ βάζω μόνο γνήσιο φιλτρο χωρίς να υποστηρίζω την suzuki. Λαδια και φιλτρο αέρα
Βάζω αλλά. Σύντομα θα ανεβάσω βίντεο με ένα πολυ καλό φιλτρο αέρα που δεν θέλει αλλαγή
Ποτέ και ούτε θέλει καθαριστικά. Το αγοράζεις μια φορά και το έχεις για μια ζωή.

Do you need to use torque wrench when tighten the oil plug.
I use torque wrench everywhere, Some people play the great mechanics and the say they have a great feel on when to stop tightening by hand. I m not interested in making such claims. The materials used in today's motorcycles and metals are not quality and mistakes then cost. You will need a torque wrench for other areas in the bike so why not use it also here? Hope it answers your question. By the way there is a more updated version of oil change in the channel, it has better information just look it up.

Εαν εβαλες την σωστη ποσοτητα μην ανησυχεις. Τα λαδια κυκλοφορουν στο κυκλωμα λιπανσης και γιαυτο μετα στο τζαμακι δεν τα βλεπεις. Οταν σβησεις θα ξαναερθουν στην σωστη σταθμη. Μπραβο για την 1η σου δουλεια

Γεια σας. Να ρωτησω, τα λαδια ειναι της BELRAY? Kαι ποιος τυπος ειναι? Ειστε στο επαγγελμα μηχανικος μοτοσυκλετων? Ευχαριστω και μπραβο για τα βιντεακια!!!
Γεια σου billy, ασχολούμαι από μικρός με μοτοσικλέτες κ αυτοκίνητα και είμαι άλλου είδος μηχανικός. Όχι μηχανολόγος. Τα λάδια exp 20w50 μόνο κ μόνο για το κιβώτιο και για να αλλάζουν καλύτερα οι ταχύτητες. Το καλοκαίρι ότι πρέπει, το χειμώνα αν θέλεις να έχεις αυτά θα πρέπει να αφήνεις να ζεσταθεί 5 λεπτά ο κινητήρας γιατί είναι ποιο παχύρευστα.
Εάν θέλεις χτυπά καμία διαφήμιση από τα βιντεάκια.
Ότι άλλο θες ρωτά,

You forgot to mention at the beginning to warm the engine alittle first to make the oil thinner and any particles will be floating in the oil and not settled on the bottom of the sump.
