in 95 or 96 my wife and i lived on rathbone almost around the corner from engine 33 on lawndale. we dressed our son up as a little fireman and took him trick or treating to that station. i remember one fireman who jokingly said..."he's going to take our job" lol that was so cool. memories are priceless.

As a Captain at a volunteer fire dept in Tennessee iwould like to first start off by saying that the men and women of the Detroit FireDept area lung the best and top firefighters I have seen and heard about unfortunately I have not had the opportunity the meet any but they all do an amazing job everyday considering the difficulties they face on a daily basis with the current situations of their city and the administration over them. I want to let you all know that some of the guys at my firehouse we look up to the Detroit Fire Dept personnel and there additude that they have and the passion that they have for their city and the citizens of their city. You all take so much pride in doing the jobs others would not dare the disk to do. So on behalf of myself and other firemen around my area keep strong in what you are doing and thank you for the encouragement you bring to fire depts all over the world because this could be any city at any point in time and you can't let things take your pride away from doing the job you love and that is firefighting and serving your community the best you can.

Switzerland here…. I love your documentations ❤️ they’re great to see, despite the trouble these firefighters go through. What heroes these women and men are!!!! I just can’t, that they don’t get proper equipment, not even toilet paper, it blows my mind 🤯 even in our small volunteer firehouses the equipment and vehicles are way better 😭 hopefully today, it’s better…. they do a priceless job for the community! May the honest and good hearted people be safe 🍀

DFD are true heroes and don't get the respect that is deserved. That is sad, these are some of the best FFs in the US and Canada.

Definitely. If I could rank the best fire departments in the US by geographical region; the Detroit Fire Department would be number one for the Midwest, the New York Fire Department for the Mid-Atlantic, Boston for New England, Miami for the Southeast, Oklahoma City for the Southwest, and Los Angeles for the West.

So they talk about the mileage and it's 80k, 120k, that's sort of misleading. That's how many miles it's been driven. They idle for a hell of a lot longer. Actual miles on the motor would be closer to 300k for some of them. That's inexcusable for the city to not replace that apparatus.

    • @ice44567
      @ice44567 8 лет назад +5

Yep. In the Diesel world, wear is determined by running hours, not mileage. Still, typically a working hour service life is reached around the 150k-200k mile marker.

Many have no clue to the extreme measures the men and women of the department go through on a daily basis. I'm glad Detroit On Fire 2 sheds more light on their situation.

Really heartbreaking story to see people who care about the city watch it literally go down in flames around them. Both literally and figuratively. I wonder what the status of some of those companies are now, post bankruptcy. I'm sure the situation is even more dire and probably past the breaking point by now. There's just nobody to pay taxes to fund anything; the whole city is in the whirlpool of death.
Also, I'm surprised they didn't comment on hydrant issues with complete lack of water pressure or severely reduced from mains that have been turned off or busted for years.

Thank you Constance for making this video. I live in a middle upper class subarb of Chicago and would have never thought the fire department budget would be this bad. We have a population of 25,000 people and have 4 tankers. And an aerial ladder from 2011. Also have 2 scuba dive units with only one small river. I thank all of the firefighters in Detroit with risking their lives every single day fighting fires. Also this shit you guys put up with from the commissioner is unbelievable. Thank You

Let me guess.....the fire stations that are "Browned Out and Closed" are all in the poor areas of the city.
Detroit does have a "High End" area, which is almost never shown. You can be sure that those people have fire stations close by and opened. After all, they PAY taxes.
You have to ask the question , WHY ? Find the answer to that and you'll understand the What.
Why is the city willing to neglect the poor areas ? To get those people out , so that a more viable community can be built ? One that contributes $$$$ to the city ?
    Think about it.

people who have lived there for years can't see the decay as much but i left detroit in 2001 and came back for a while last year and i could see the how much decay had happened to the area surrounded by vernor, springwells, lawndale, and fisher. in the 90's that area was a lot more intact and clean and probably one of detroits last remaining areas that was still mostly intact. so yeah even that area is starting to see the decay that the lower west side that i grew up in around the michigan ave./livernoise area experienced in the 70's and 80's. so no detroit neighborhood or hold out area i used to call them is safe of massive decay anymore no matter what it seems. i predict in 50 years detroit will be a small city of 2-300,000 people if you're lucky with just a fairly big skyline for that population. and most of it will be unrecognizable for it will be sprawled out like a western or southeastern city with rebuilt suburban looking neighborhoods and subdivisions with actual woods inbetween. it will no longer be built like, look like, or feel like a huge midwestern city but again more like a half sized atlanta or nashville. what a freaking shame, but that's what's probably going to happen. i think what needs to be done whether people like it or not is to raze the majority of structures on the outer 70 sq. mile ring and allow new municipalities or suburbs to develop there. make detroits new city limits the inner 70 sq. miles and raze much of it and fix up what's remaining and redevelop infill in a respective retro urban style, get a government and system that works, draw in a diverse amount of industries, and try to slowly repopulate that inner 70 sq. miles to a million again cause you can forget it ever having 2 million again, and at the very least aim for a respective midsized 500,000 population that will level out and stay. it's better to have a functional cohesive fairly dense half million than than the dysfunctional fragmented condition it's in now. and hey, who's to say that if that actually worked detroit could have the option of re annexing that outer 70 sq miles back once redeveloped ? or it can do what nashville, louisville, and certain other cities have done which is merge city and county. the stronger population and economy of wayne county merged with detroit could do wonders for the area. might sound like a crazy idea but desperate times calls for desperate measures and right now i don't see anyone trying to think of any progressive cures for the town.

It's true what he said about not making the news unless somebody dies or it damages equipment, but if you live in places like Livonia or Novi it's breaking news. A few months ago in Walled Lake when a long standing historical building that housed Pepino's Restaurant burned down, you had every news station in SE Michigan flying over in choppers talking about it for days. You never hear about fires in Detroit, because if the networks started to report every fire that happen it would take the entire hour they have 3x a day just to report arson fires.

Detroit needs to have a Homesteading program, like they did in the wild west. Sell land for one dollar, as long as the buyer improves the land, and stays there for 5 years. Then, the DFD needs to have a "Mutual Aid" program, to have volunteer Fire Companies come in and cover stations, in Detroit, from the outer suburbs, to get training and experience. Then, they should also ask for donations, of gear and rigs, from all over the US.

    • @constanceyork
      @constanceyork  Год назад +1

The new mayor has actually made a lot of changes and things are looking much better than when I did this. They have hired many firefighters- they had to as many were forced to leave after bankruptcy. They have bought many new rigs. They have torn down a lot of vacant buildings, rehabbed some, and the mayor has come up with many ideas that are unconventional. In Detroit- the people who stayed have seen property values rise. Arson has dropped, but crime is still pretty bad.

@@constanceyorkConstance I am glad you have made two documentaries on the struggles and strife of the Detroit Fire Department. Mike Dugan seemed like a more competent mayor when compared to Coleman Young (may he burn in Hell) or Kwame Kilpatrick; who was released from prison and put on house arrest at his mother's home in Georgia due to the virus outbreak. Watching the firefighters talking about how it's extremely upsetting for them when elderly people, children or disabled people are either severely injured or killed in fires tugged at my heartstrings because many of them are moms and dads.

I am from Michigan. Seems like the DFD is totally badass working under those conditions. I feel so bad for them and worry about their safety as well as the citizens. I remember driving through Flint and out of 12 houses on a street there were 4 or 5 burned out at that time. I live in Virginia since I was 19 years old. I wondered why the abandoned and burned out houses weren't boarded up like they do here. Now I know why, no resources and they will just burn it again. This is just so sad for the good people that live there and want to stay. They get frustrated and leave.

Detroit is a prime example of a city government that cares ONLY about the special interest groups that flood the officials with under-the-table "donations" and how much they can gain for their own greedy purposes. Cities that are run by people like that fast becoming more like a septic tank than a place to live, work and raise a family. I really feel sorry for the firemen, police and other first responders that have to battle through each workday TRYING to make a difference when NOBODY in the city government gives a damn about them or the citizens of the city.

At some point, you have to choose your family over the community over the area you live in. When things get so bad that you have to move your family to an area that is safer, so that your family will thrive. Detroit used to be a place to grow your family. Beautiful area with growth, but now, between low economics and the bad element, it;s not worth it. You have to get out of there and grow your family some where else. It really hurts to have to relocate , but it;s for the better.

Yes, I'd love to, but it costs a lot of money and even more time to do these docs and I've never broke even off doing them, so to do another is basically agreeing to volunteer my time for a year. Which was fine when it was an urgent matter. When my friend's lives were in danger. When citizens were living in hell. But without donations, I simply can't afford to do a follow-up. That may change at some point, just the way it is right now. Sharing my docs does help though- so please do. Thanks for watching.

Ive been down to Detroit city hall to offer to purchase properties....and Iam greeted with rude workers who enjoy telling you "you can't buy it"...but I can sit on my porch and watch scrappers slowly destroy the home I wanted to buy cuz the City and Wayne County are slow, corrupt and STUPID!!!!

This city got what it deserves: Greedy politicians, Democratic thought, Liberal/Progressive ideology, ran out the production and productive people. This is the direct result of socialism and big government. You have to look at what made the city thrive in the first place and why people came to Detroit. Freedom, production, and opportunity. Three key components which were ran out of town. Now what is left are city employees with no tax basis due to know industry. This socialist process will infect city after city until the U.S. turns into a 3rd would industry. Just say no to an obese federal government and Progressive do-gooders.

Hi Adam, Thanks for the donation. I ran into trouble after a computer upgrade my software stopped working- when I was almost finished. So now I'm forced to start over with editing. I'm suffering from some medical issues right now and only working part-time which is why I am forced to fundraise for the remaining $300 I need. Not having a lot of luck. But the good news is- yes I have been working and planning the entire time. I have great interviews great footage and enough ideas to do at least 3 more documentaries. I'm sorry it's taking so long- trust me it's VERY hard to wait. But you will be very happy when they are done. I'm really excited about them. Thanks!

I'm sure the DFD appreciates your support- but volunteers offering to come here and work for free- does nothing to help the guys here. You only re-enforce city hall's attitude that the guys here are expendable- that their vast experience and dedication mean nothing because they (city hall) can get guys to come here and do what the DFD do for free- or minimum wage.
I'm sure your hearts are in the right place, and I THANK YOU - but offering to come here and work for free doesn't help the DFD's current fight- which is being paid a fair wage and retirement for what they do and have done for 20+ years. If your guys want to do something for the DFD - hold a fundraiser for Brendan Milewski who just had his medical cut after working for the DFD left him in a wheelchair.
I am not DFD, and can't speak for them- but this is my opinion on the subject.
DFD Firefighters work hard and have seen plenty of death and carnage- they deserve for their employers to respect and honor their dedication and sacrifice- and they deserve to not have to worry about their retirements. People don't understand that having 7,000 fires on your resume does IN FACT - make you a better firefighter and one that can't be easily replaced- as much as city hall likes to think they can.

Constance York Thank You for creating these documentaries. I have family who put their lives on the line in the line of duty and this is criminal what is happening to the folks @ DFD. They live in another country and know what it means to be a DFD Firefighter and these guys have respect from other FFs.

    Detroit: A pyromaniac's dream city.
I am, in fact, a diagnosed pyromaniac myself. I don't live in Detroit though. I know I will get hate for posting this here...and I am taking a chance sticking my neck out like this, but I have to say this: I am sickened by all these arson fires. I have never EVER burned a structure and I never will. No matter how badly I want to, I just can't and won't. I channel those urges into something safer: newspapers and cardboard and wood in a fire pit in a clearing in the woods where nobody can be hurt. I feel so badly for these poor residents of this city who have to live in such fear. I know. I get hate all the time, even though the worst I have done is torch a dumpster (twice, same dumpster). I can understand why people would get angry when I tell them what I am because it is frustrating to have to put up with some immoral jackass who burns down houses for fun and then to see someone admit fully that they suffer from pyromania...I get it, and I am sorry. I am not dangerous and I wish nothing but love for the people of Detroit. I desperately want things to get better there. I have nothing but respect for the firefighters who have to risk their lives putting out these fires. :(
Much love from the E. Coast.

They need to audit the city of Detroit and if the city leaders.are wasting one dime they should be fired and put in jail. When you can afford to put toilet paper and paper towels in fire stations you're doing something wrong. I realize they need tax dollars from house and property taxes for fire departments and Detroit has more abandoned property than just about anyone but still.

As much as i would love to get a crew of guys from my area to go help fight fire for a week or two in Detroit. What needs to happen is we need to get all of the IAFF divisions involved. NFPA , OSHA, NiOSH...freakin EVERYONE. We need career, volunteer, part time, current, retired, and future firefighters. We have to hit not just city but state level and FORCE A CHANGE. The conditions our brothers and sisters with the Detroit Fire Department and many others are working in is just too far beyond terrible and inexcusable. And its not just fire department but police and EMS as well. All over the nation theres departments being browned out closed and even entire agencys shutdown. Theres not enough support for the emergency services from the rest of the emergency services community!

    so it seems,
    no work,
    high crime levels,
    firehouses closing down,
most arent equipped to run properly,
when the land is empty, barren and scarred,
those in charge of running the city will be out of work too,
and who are they gonna blame??
do they realise they wont paid to run an empty city??
