Haven't got around to ordering a degaussing coil yet but I always love watching the process. Watching the nitty gritty analog CRT tech at work and seeing the stuff that can affect its output is great, has a charm that more convenient modern displays can't stack up to

FYI for future reference this isn't a good idea to do for kicks on a Trinitron. The aperture grille support wire for the nask is very easily bent or dislodged from the pull of a magnet and you can't undo that damage with a deguassing coil. A slot mask won't care if you do this. Deguass will fix it.

Came hear after seing slomoguys last short showing CRT TV degaussing in slow mo to learn what the hell degaussing even is
I'm surprised I don't know about degaussing CRT TVs, I'm old enough to we had CRT TVs in my house until I was 16 or so, but maybe the degauss button wasn't on any of the TVs we had, or I never noticed it.

a lot of time it was it was in the menus as well for manual degaussing. but most CRT TVs have an automatic degausser that activates when the TV is turned off

Highly recommend getting a degausing coil just on the off chance a magnet does that to your screen. With a little bit of patience an old corded drill can do the same thing. It isn't as powerful so it will take longer and might require awkward sweeps to fix parts of the screen. The drill worked for me till I got a degausing coil.

That song is the same one as in DanTDM's custom mod adventures he used to do.

I've heard it said that using a degaussing coil/wand on a trinitron has the potential to damage the aperture grille. Is there any truth to that? It wouldn't seem like it; if an external degausser could damage it then surely so could the inner one, but I'm no expert.

I've not heard that before, but Trinitrons can be finiky when it comes to some restoration tools. A CRT rejuvenator cand ruin a Sony Trinitron. I'll see if I can find any data, but I've not seen any damage to my Trinitrons.

@@RetroTechUSA I've heard that the issue is if you get way too close to it, probably excessively, to the point where it damages the grill. I haven't seen examples of it actually happening yet. I've only read about this tip on reddit as well.

The so-called aperture grille is indeed a bunch of fine vertical wires (that's why a couple of horizontal wires is used to keep the vertical ones in place). I guess that a strong enough magnetic fild can somehow bend the wires.

@@RetroTechUSA Any update? I just bought one for my Sony Trinitron and I don't want to cause any further damage, is there a proper way to use it?

Where does one buy a CRT degausing coil such at the one shown here? I've got need for one as one of my CRTs has convervance issues.

I have the exact same model shown in this video. Got it years ago from an ebay seller in the US (I'm in the UK) so I'd recommend hitting ebay.

Is the safe to use around consoles computers that are near the crt you are servicing

sorry to ask a possibly obvious question, is the DEGAUSS button not enough?

    • @CPS2
      @CPS2 2 года назад

An external degaussing coil is much more powerful than the internal loop.
The degauss button should normally be enough though.

I tried the cordless drill trick on a 2030 with a persitant purle corner on the screen. Didn't work. Ended up gluing a couple magnets to the tube

Would a degaussing coil help fix a portion of the screen being discolored ?

Depending on the monitor. If lcd could be a stuck pixel. Or dead pixel. If it's a crt monitor degaussing may work
