Read the letter out to the police, omitting any references to TV Licence, TVL, or the BBC, and they will tell you it's blackmail. A television broadcaster which does not like to be filmed. You couldn't make that up.
They don't care about appearing to be stupid as enough people are genuinely scared of these letters that they pay - no matter how much somebody tells them that they don't need a license.
When I cancelled almost fourteen years ago, they telephoned me a few weeks later even though I hadn't given them my landline number. The stroppy woman I spoke to was clearly suspicious over how genuine I was, so I invited TV Licensing to come round and see for themselves to which they declined.
Yes, you got it right; all this time later they still send threatograms (latest giving me 10 days to get licensed even though I haven't had a TV set since), every single one of which I have filed away. They aren't every month for the last few years btw so maybe hit by the cost of living crisis. Should they ever get seriously heavy, this pile with its consistent contradictions will all be presented as evidence of harrassment after I not only met legal guidelines but went beyond that with more than reasonable offer. And I save the envelopes too. Not got many of those red ones though.
The invitation no longer stands as they are clearly enemies of the people and absolutely NOT the impartial broadcaster upon which rock they were founded.
Merrie Christmas Jon and followers. My advice if you are looking for a new year's resolution is treat this as the equivalent of the comedy they stopped producing years ago.
One bit I don't get though. Why are they still addressing letters to Sir or Madam? I thought the beeb were openly pro gender neutral. Surely this is clear discrimination.

Had a few of these threatening letters, badly worded stating I need a licence if I watch my Television, when in fact I can watch my TV all day long, without a license, as long as do not watch certain things. Which is not made clear in the letter.
I also had the visit from the "enforcement officer" who never even knocked on the door, just posted a very similar letter in the box and left. 🤣🤣

Just do not interact with them, ever.

Oh a big red envelope or fancy toilet paper. Chilli is a legend and his speech at the end to the BBC was class. As long as you're playing a legit game don't be afraid of these bullies. Literally everything I watch is streamed these days haven't watched broadcast TV in over two years but the BBC seem to find it hard to believe people can actually function without live TV. Keep up the fight Mr Chilli. Surly the internet with on-demand is rendering broadcast TV obsolete anyways. I admit I miss watching live sport sometimes but I just go down the pub and watch it there if it is a big game. Better than paying the fee and funding that lot any day.

I agree entirely with your point that we don't need to inform netflix/sky/virgin etc that we don't want to buy their service so why is this harassment legal?

I don't have a TV (because I don't want one) or watch Broadcast TV Live or Recorded. If I answer the door my Comment will be simple not required without giving name or reason, if they obtain a search warrant then I will ask a simple question where is your proof I have been watching, then file a counter claim for Harassment against the BBC, with using the Police Officers as witnesses stating no devices watch Broadcast TV, so the evidence provided for search warrant would have been falsely obtained.
Unless reading epubs or Netflix on my mobile phone or laptop is against the BBC requirements but neither are Broadcast TV or Live so a TV Licence is not required under the current guidelines and in addition under the old rules I would not require a TV Licence as I don't have Equipment capable of receiving and that includes the mobile Phone and/or computers if software is not embedded on your device. Otherwise if having a computer (without software) every single office, company would need a TV Licence, so would be political suicide for BBC and sitting government and very expensive court cases no doubt.
