White's boots cleaning and conditioning with Obenauf's.

- Spent the week up in the mountains camping. We got a little rain and snow which made for some mud. The White's Smoke Jumpers held strong and were muddier than the video lets off. A scrub brush and some Obanauf's put them back in working order.

Thanks for the video
I think your wrong on the over saturation part. You don't want them dripping wet but I had a pair of red wing loggers that I would use mink oil on them twice a year. I would use the heat gun and put as many applications as needed until the leather wouldn't take any more. 3 to 4 usually. Those boots lasted me 7 to 8 years and I could have kept wearing them but I ended up getting new boots. But the leather was always spot on amd was in great shape. I worked a dairy farm so I was in them all the time for those years.
TY! Very helpful.
Awesome video.
hope your back to work. God bless you
I have nicks builder pro and treat them the same way you do grease about twice a year and oil about twice a season or every 6 weeks roughly
Hi so I am looking at getting the same whites boots you have what are the ones you have called?
Really serious boots , heavy & all weather rugged , 👍
I hike and camp in wetlands with all leather black (not desert suede) combat boots. Sometimes I'm moving through knee high water. At the end of these outings, the leather INSIDE the boot turns rock hard in spite of treating the outside, drying slowly, using newspapers on the inside, etc. Can one use Obenhauf's oil on the inside? Another thing that's never brought up: Can one use shoe polish, such as Kiwi, after oiling them with Obenhauf's'? Thank you for the video and info.
if you're submitting your boots to that much water I would definitely be putting obenaufs on the inside. you should be ok with polishing them after, just give them time to dry and absorb all the grease before you apply any polish
Are they water proof I don't mean puddle jumping i mean all day outside in the rain would they keep my feet dry
+Michelle Baer water resistant
Michelle Baer you need put mink oil or obuof to make em water repellent
I just got a pair of whites but it seems the laces are not long enough?
I have a pair of chipawa loggers. I have used black shoe polish on them. Any ideas on how I would strip that off and go back to the original oiled look ??
You can try this method
Put acetone on a cloth and wipe the boots down thoroughly. Wash with saddle soap, rinse, and let dry 24 hours.
Hey bro I like your videos.. I just bought my first pair of Amber Iron Rangers and wondering if I shpuld use that same oil on them. Whne I bought em thats the oil I got along with it.. My boots are getting a little thrashed and i dont know too much about caring for them.
Red Wing has a few good products for their boots. if you clean them and let them dry you should be ok with applying their stuff.
i luv those boots and i luv ur videos i watch them all the time
COUNTRYBOY Smith Thanks
The heel on your pair seems to be lower than the really high ones. Did you get a shorter heel?
+MrPotatoesLatkie no, standard heel
The lugs are wearing down and look different. mine have no lug left so they look like dress soles!
I have the same boots. They are great. Like the scrub brush you use to clean yours. I have been under the opinion of keeping them heavily oiled for maximum protection from manure and waterproofing was the best way to go. I am probably overdoing it... Might try it your way and see how I like it.
I'm sure it all depends on what you use them for. If you are in a climate where you are constantly in mud and moisture than I can see how it would help. I just see some leather that is so saturated with leather conditioner it seems that it would inhibit the natural breathability.
AzDadOnFire I agree that does make sense. How often do you clean yours/ oil them?
With water...maybe once or twice a year depending on how muddy they get. I oil them maybe 3 times a year.
Do these boots have a steel toe, celastic toe or plain toe?
+4doorxj celastic
Amazing boots collection
whats is your favorite?
its a toss up between my whites and iron rangers
really good looking boots
+韋豊 thanks
what kind of pants are those?
Thomas Shue they are the double front duck pants by Round House.
i was gonna guess carhartt
light brown
Nicely done. Good video. I grew up wearing Whites but moved to Nicks after the Whites quality disappeared. Nicks are what Whites were 50 years ago. They make a darn tough boot!
+Al Pine care to tell us what makes white's boot's quality decreasing in your opinion?
I believe a lot of the employees from White's went over and started Nick's. Like their top bootmakers from what i heard on Reddit a while back
Man I like them , so cool looking boot , nedd to order some.
+Raul Ortiz thanks
I was thinking of getting a pair of the Hathorn Explroer H7805 firefighters. I just don't have $450 for White's. Would you recommend them?
+Condor1970 you'll do well with them
I heard the arch support in these is a little less pronounced (I need proper arch support badly), as the Hathorns have a leather shank, and a rubber mid-sole, instead of a leather mid-sole to form the to the bottom of your foot. Thanks for all your info in the video, but....
.... I decided to get a pair of "Wesco Jobmasters" with a coupon discount online. They were $350 with the coupon, which I think is about as good as you're going to get. They have a steel shank, and a nice thick leather mid-sole. The surprise is the wonderful arch support, and spacious toe box in the E width sizes. I was worried the 11.5E would be too narrow, since I usually take a EE, but these really do fit better than I thought. They will require lots of break in, but I think for the money I could afford at my max budget, I made a better choice in going with stock Wesco Jobmasters. The next step up would be custom built Wesco or White's, but now we're talking around $500 for what I want.
U know what u could do is find a pair of used whites then send them in for a rebuild .. u would have a brand new boot for around 300 to 350 dollars
I have a really bad squeak in the sole of one of my White's, any idea how to get rid of it?
sometimes the leather shank becomes loose. a shoe repairman can put a few nails through it and that should help.
The boot repair place did that, but I think they just missed the spot where the squeak is coming from.
What kind of pants are you wearing?
+kmsboots I believe those are my Round house duck jeans
chippewa boots for me but like the cleaning idea quick and simple I like it
nice
I had chippewas last season tore my feet up... never again
Did you bother to read the recommended cleaning process provided to you by the manufacturer? Dude, don’t reinvent the wheel. 🤪
how old are your whites boots ..... they seem like there a bit over size for your feet ? thoughts ? I bought my first pair in feb 2015 and best boot ever own ...
I have the recommended thumb width between my toes and the end of the boot. They are 11.5E and I could probably have gone to a 11E or a 11.5D. They snug up well with wool socks and my feet don't slide around.
I've had them for a year
AzDadOnFire Did you order these with the brown mid sole and heel stack? The pictures online look black, hard to tell. Thanks man dig the videos!
Tyler Jones I asked for "natural midsole and heel stack" i like contrast.
AzDadOnFire Thanks for the info, I like the contrast too.
There nice I use nick 4
Can someone please explain to me the idea behind the thick heel with logger style boots?
+TommyNitro helps with the steep mountains in the west
TommyNitro. better posture/arch support, more traction, longer wearlife
Thanks for the responses. I'm interested to try on a pair of this style of boots to see what the thick heel feels like.
TommyNitro carolinas, chippewa and carhartt are pretty popular. They're also on the cheaper side, id start with those. Most boot stores carry them
R the boots waterproof? What kind of toe
They are not waterproof. They will offer some water resistance while stepping in the occasional puddle or stream but the leather will eventually saturate and your feet will get wet.
The toe is called a celastic toe. It acts as a mild toe protection, you can press it down if you push hard enough with your fingers.
Nice!
The arches, and heels on your shoes don't seem to be a high as the ones I see in their catalog and webpage. What is the name of the option for that modification? Regular arch, lower arch?
Once the lugs wear down they look different
How does the quality of Whites compare to Iron Rangers?
they are an all around heavier duty boot. all leather no cork in the foot beds.
iron Rangers have their place but if I was going to work all day in the forest I'd take the White's.
this fall there way better
I was a big Obenauf devotee too. These things are kind of accepted as religion like lexol or Huberd's. But I recently tried some stuff called Garrison Gold on Amazon on some destroyed Danners and it was something else. Their website talks about being non-toxic horse tack stuff, but it showed pictures of boot oiling and repair on their main page and it's impressive.
+INFOCOOL I'll look into it
I own Garrison Gold, Garrison Grease, and Garrison Guard. They are all good performers.
Let's get a review
If I'm not a logger can I still wear these boots?
no. get lost
+Dylan Greenfield Yes, boots are made for everyone and any path in life.
+Christopher Potts its better than being a logger wanna-be you nerd
Yeah I would not clean a 600 dollar pair of boots w Ajax dish soap or anything w detergent.. saddle soap is fine or just water .. high detergent stuff strips the leather of its natural oils .. sure u put some back on but not a good idea .. just my opinion
These boots have been in a lot worse things than soap when on the fireline
Nicks will tell you to use dawn dishsoap
I bought some urban logger, pretty much dish soap and bick 4, o obenauffs... Nothing more, this babies been running strong for a year now,
@@cleettaurus8637 the video on their channel says to use saddle soap but who knows maybe it doesn’t matter.
It's ok to put them in the oven. Just heat the oven till it's warm, turn it off and put the boots in. Don't let the oven get hotter than you could tolerate yourself.
+waynerjson we've got enough heat here in Arizona....no oven needed
I have a 10 year old pair of Wesco's that I've done just that. They're still going strong. As stated above, don't let the temperature get hotter than your skin can tolerate, turn the oven off and pop the boots in. It works the same as putting your boots out in the hot summer sun.
Can't wait to get a pair of Nicks Hot Shots ordered I've had their Ridgelines for over a year now and I want to get a new pair for fire season so I have a pair to swap from every couple days
Nick's make a very good boot.
+AzDadOnFire I can't complain about whites. have never tried them. I live in the same town as both companies.
+Jibbz707 I have the ridge lines and they were a week on my feet and they are too comfortable to take off. I'm ordering the hotshots next check and can't wait to get them ready for the season.
I don't want to sound neg....4th rebuild ? New heal? Rad boots dude
Your wife is gonna get you when she realizes you stole her dish brush to clean your Whites.
Your other video has you using the hose and dish soap on a several hundred dollar pair of shoes as well. Why risk damaging them to save 2 minutes doing it in a way that isn't known to be harmful?
my boots encounter chemicals a lot more damaging than this mild soap.
even Nick's boots recommend using soap when cleaning your boots.
if you're so concerned about your boots you better just use them as indoor slippers and not the work boots they are intended for.
AzDadOnFire I doubt those chemicals are engineered to strip natural and synthetic oils out of porous media such as cutting boards and your hands...
Anyway, I forgot to mention how incredibly defensive you are over this process, to the point of not even answering people's simple inquisitions about it.
But you keep on doing what you want. Clearly you can afford to take care of your boots in the cheapest and most expedient way possible, citing one tiny boot brand who says it's fine.
+zunedog31 fire retardant is one of the most caustic materials. ash, which is basically lye. salt, oil, grease, automotive fluids just to name a few that are a lot more damaging to leather than a simple soap.
how would you suggest I remove those damaging chemicals?
I feel I've been fairly straight forward when defending the way I treat my shoes. it seems like the keyboard commandos are the ones who are being the most confrontational when they have nothing to offer but "i read it....." I feel my real world experience carries more weight.
Nick's is a small company but they have more boots on the feet of actual firefighters than Danner and Red Wing combined.
so, to answer your question....I do it this way because it works for me and makes the most sense. clean it like i clean my skin and once that is done I replace the oils that were removed with the dirt, grease and grime.
thanks for following up.
AzDadOnFire You can do it however you want, I guess my point is that people will take your videos at face value. Not knowing that you are purposefully stripping oil and other dried fluids from the boots and oiling them afterwards. Some people are going to do this without oiling, or without trees to retain the form of the shoes. I think you should at least mention that this method is controversial and there is some debate as to when and how it should be used. Just trying to protect the guys with less experience out there taking youtube videos as gospel.
+zunedog31 thanks for the pointers. I'm going to do a follow up to both boots and I'll go into more detail.
i need to oil my boots and my hands. both are just beat up from hard, heavy work
+21 Gun Salute obenaufs works great for both
Dude.... Ajax?..... How about some saddle soap?....
+Metallicuda i use both
Your boots are hot..dirty or clean..hot !!
+rhymeandreasoning thanks? Not trying the sexual angle with my videos.....but thanks for watching
rhymeandreasoning pervert.
This video makes me cringe.
too much oil makes doesn't make leather weak. this guy's "opinion" doesn't change fundamental chemistry. What too much oil does is over saturate and then push back out of the pores. Now if you are an idiot and don't wipe off excess oil it will push back out and clog the pores and that can weaken the leather, it's like overeating pizza, after a while, it will come right back out. So what you need to do is then wipe off excess oil that pops up after an hour. But do oil often, but also wipe off excess often. Not oiling enough is far worse than over oiling. Also chemistry doesn't care about opinions.
Eating pizza is just like oiling boots.....ummm......riiiight.
@@KimballCody poor baby. Hasn't encountered the concept of analogies yet. Don't give up hun.
Those look extremely saturated
want those hot boots on my paralyzed feet
hell yeah brother
Pops would strangle me if he saw me use ajax instead of saddle soap on his whites
What he doesn't know won't hurt him

You say you don't believe saturating the boots with oil is a good practice, then you begin to saturate the leather with oil, after you saturated it with water. If you cleaned those boots properly with saddle soap and very little water, the leather would drink oil much better. Your boots are going to lose their shape and give you exactly the effect you don't want, because A. you don't let your boots air dry completely or boot dryer, B you saturate them with liquids, and C. you probably wear them when they are saturated with some sort of liquid which breaks them in to a point which again you claim you don't desire. Whatever do your thing booboo, can always buy another pair once these are too soft.
Non of those things you mentioned have happened
i have 4 pairs of white's smoke jumper 400v, 1 pair of wesco, and 1 pair of hoffman and i treat all my boots with respect. this video is so wrong....
So, you don't wear them as intended? WORK!
And that is a tutorial on how to ruin a very very expensive lair of boots that aren't even worth the price in the first place
+Daniel Bill three wildland summers and they're still going strong.
Whats your method, got boots for wildland not too long ago and need some help
