@@oriandthesleepytime like there's fucking dialogue choices in ShB that call back to it. They do such a good job making this felt through the rest of the story
@@mjs3188 Plus there are subtle hints that the WoL *still* isn't over his death even into later expansions, as where prior to his death the WoL was always stoic and unshakable, after his death that stoicism comes across as more of a facade that is more easily broken, which shows just how much Haurchefant meant to the WoL. And had Haurchefant survived, I wouldn't be at all surprised to have seen the WoL & Haurchefant develop a bond that went beyond mere friendship and camaraderie. @@Thranng It's also explained during the WHM job quests that healing magic can't heal fatal wounds, so if someone is mortally wounded, no amount of healing magic can save them.
More than that, Haurchefant was Edmont's *illegitimate* son, he was born out of wedlock, which shows even more just how much Edmont loved Haurchefant that he and the rest of House Fortemps were so devastated by his death. He was the youngest of Edmont's sons, and despite the fact that he was born illegitimate, he was still no less part of the family to the Fortemps household than Emmanelain & Artoirel were. He was only the half-brother of the two older Fortemps children, and yet neither of them cared that he had a different mother than they did or that he was the result of Edmont siring him out of wedlock. I find this similarly as impactful as Nina from Fullmetal Alchemist. It's that one event that just keeps echoing throughout the rest of the series, providing a reality check and moral motivation for our protagonists
Imma be honest while nina's story was horrific, i still find haurchefants demise to be far more traumatizing, especially for those with a strong maternal instinct...
My character cut her hair after this. He was truly the best boy, genuinely good guy, helped us out and believed in us, no matter what happened. Even despite us being the vaunted Hero Of Light he still jumps in to defend us because that was his duty, and he even dies smiling knowing we'll live on.
Same, i started with long hair and a natural hair color, as a teeny whm/brd, left heavensward feeling so depressed that my character had her hair cut short and dyed, made it so that each expansion made the dye leave the root tips farther and farther until shadowbringers when we were bathed in light (bleaching it).
I feel for the people that want to save him as a healer (Believe me I'm one of them) But lore wise, we can only cure who are unconscious, flesh wounds, or minor wounds etc. Like Haurchefaunt's case, fatal wounds is beyond our help since it pierce through his body
Later on Square Enix added Alphaunid into this scene trying to heal him, but he says the wound is too deep and won't mend. Really like the extra touch for an even more emotional gut punch.
I was playing a Red Mage, so it had a similar effect on me. Red Mage is nicknamed the "Rez Mage" for a reason, and yet even a Red Mage is unable to save him.
extremely un-fun fact: that whole scene where alphinaud tries to heal haurchefant and ultimately says he cant heal mortal wounds, that wasnt in the original version of the cinematic, it was added only in shadowbringers and only because of overwhelming criticism that many healer players practically begged to heal or revive him, so the devs felt they needed to explain it properly. Of course if people actually paid attention to any of the healer job quests they would have known that mortal wounds cant be healed through and revives merely bring people back from a downed state, even y'shtola explained that once a soul enters the lifestream of the aetherial sea it can never be called back to its body (post ARR msq). 2nd extremely un-fun fact: the reason we cant heal him is because the attack that Zephirim did besides being a tankbuster also comes with a catastrophic debuff that reduces all incoming and outgoing heals by 90%, its a concentrated form of light aspected aether, which means concentrated stasis. and if you've played shadowbringers, you'll understand the consequences of this. As painful as that was, the fact that we had to tell Count Edmont was what made it even worse.
Yea Edmont always breaks me

"What did he hit us with"
A tankbuster, that needs to be stacked, and debuffs any healing to affected targets lol
Mortal Strike, a literal Mortal Strike.
Why did you do this Haurchefant? 😢 I was playing War you fool, i would holmgang this puny attack and fully heal after.
He used the Final Fantasy 8 version of Deathblow.
Fitting...
By default, he's the tank.

It gets explained in the Extreme Version of the Thordan Fight. Basically the Light Spear is a Tankbuster that decreases Healing received by 90% or so

Also since Edmont can’t Mourn the way he wants since from what I recall, he was a bastard child.

Just pausing at 1:40 and seeing everyones face. You know a game is good when everyone has a similar reaction, god I love this game.

So I replayed this after becoming a father. Man I thought I cried before. But I was bawling after hearing the grief in His father's voice
