Why Oliver Glasner's Success At Palace Is Much More Than "New Manager Bounce"

  • The last six Premier League fixtures for Crystal Palace have brought five wins and one draw with 16 goals scored and just four conceded but with plenty of neutrals having seen the Eagles' late season form and attributed it simply to "new manager bounce" given the presence of Oliver Glasner in the Selhurst Park dugout, the truth actually hints at a far more solid foundation for success having been laid since he first took over back in February of 2024.
I appreciate that, for the most part, this channel tends to steer clear of my passion for Palace but with the club having been so heavily involved in the news cycle over the last couple of weeks, I just felt it was right to give my take on the view that this is nothing more than an isolated purple patch of form which will vanish heading into next season.
Hopefully you've enjoyed it, if you have or indeed if you haven't please do consider letting me know your thought in the comments section below.
    Cheers,
    Dan

Frankfurt Fan here who started following Crystal Palace casually since Glasner became your manager. Found you on my way of searching for Palace fan voices and I'm absolutely delighted for all the fans. He may not have been the easiest to work with behind the scenes but he's a brilliant manager and I hope you guys can keep some of that exciting young talent in the squad. Unreal potential. Keep up the great videos!

Nailed it Dan.......... I've been following Palace for over 40 years and it is fair to say much of our fanbase are realistic not pessimistic. Whisper it quietly but this could be a very special period for the club. I can only think of a few times the football has been as/more enjoyable for differing reasons. Not only has Glasner transformed the players but also the mentality of the fans.
    - 90/91 season, we were direct, team built on strength power and pace and finished 3rd whilst winning the prestigious ZDS 😉🙃under Sir Steve.
    - Championship winning team 93/94 where we bulldozed teams to win the league.
    - 96/97 Autumn under Harry Bassett we were unreal, we scored goals for fun (won 6-1 two weeks on the trot) before Harry departed for Forest in the Spring.
    - 03/04 Dowie came in and transformed the team. Perhaps fortuitous in certain aspects we went from the lower reaches to squeezing into the play offs before beating Sunderland & West Ham to secure promotion. A surreal turn around.
    - 12/13 Freedman 8 game return was unreal. Previous season we'd been quite dour and club looked to consolidate itself in the Championship. Emergence of Zaha, recruitment with likes of Yala and Murray we became a great watch before Dougie jumped ship to Bolton.
    - 13/14 After Holloways departure in October many of us just wanted to see the club be competitive in the top flight. Pulis came in and not only made us structured and disciplined but we became tough to beat and ended the season with 5 wins on the bounce and what looked like relegation 6 months earlier we finished 11th.
Keep on with the YT content particularly for those who no longer use twitter 😃

Excellent video. I had the pleasure of watching a Palace training session on my birthday (10 April) at Selhurst Park. The session was in the week before the away game at Liverpool. I watched how the session was structured from a coaching point of view, how players interacted with each other and how the coaches and Glasner interacted with the players. Players like Jairo Riedewald that had been frozen out of the starting eleven under Hodgson, were playing a pivotal roll in the session. It was fascinating to see everything from that training session translated into the Liverpool match. This is definitely not a new manager bounce.

I've really enjoyed Palace at the second half of the season, some really attractive football and players seemingly performing as they should. Mateta, Eze and Olise are a mega trio to have. What I also enjoy, as a villa fan, is that with some different names, this could be a video about Emery and Villa. I honestly think that, depending on summer business, Palace are European contenders for next season. Chelsea, Brighton, Man U and West Ham still continue to be in flux makes for a great opportunity.
What I find really exciting is Villas progress, obviously, under Emery. But then seeing Palace progress properly under Glasner and also Bournemouth under Iraola also looking progressively strong; it seems like clubs around the mid table are making properly considered leadership choices and seeing the rewards of progress on the pitch, individual improvements through proper coaching and limited transfer investment. This seems like it could be some sustainable disruption to the leagues structure and I would love to see it develop further.

Glasner is a great trainer, i am a huge fan of Frankfurt , and honestly , i already miss him. He stands.for aggressive straight forward gameplay which matched the mentality of Frankfurt so well. He has got the ability to make Players better to a point they are overperforming. He is also capable of implementing young players.

Thank you so much, this was excellent. I’ve been a Palace fan since the 1967/68 season, when my Dad first took me. I feel so excited about the future. It’s reminding me of the 1990-91 season. I had the newspaper cutout of us finishing 3rd in the old First Division (pre-Premier League) on my wall until it disintegrated. It’ll be an anxious summer, as we wait to see who comes and goes, but I can’t wait for the 2024-25 season.

Spot on Sir. Palace fan here of over 50 years, and the style of play now comes over as not aggressive, but forward thinking. It seems the overall completed passes and wing work have improved immensely. At the same time defensively we seem tougher than ever to break open. Hopefully Hughes will be recovered next season, however with Doucoure available and in partnership with Wharton, this is something to look forward to. I am of the view that despite all the media talk, Olise and Eze could both stay, as they recognise their special partnership and the chance it gives them to achieve Champions League status next season where they are. People have short memories; remember the hype when Zaha moved to Man U?

Great explainer Dan. I agree with you and I have been going Palace for over 50 years. We have a clear tactical philosophy under Glasner which is progressive and is very adaptable. You cant get a more fanatical Eagles fan than me but hearing you say that Ghehi and Olise going but we are going to be better,i feel you are on cloud cuckoo land.We can just about afford Ghehi to go and i say that with a heavy heart because no true fan wants him to go but since he doesn't want to be at Palace anymore, hence the non signing of contract,he has to go.No player is bigger than the club.Touch that front three and it all goes to pieces. You sell Aywe,Ward,Clyne,Schlupp. That's over 250,00 a week you are saving. You give more money to Olise,Eze,Wharton and others. You bring forward Franca,JRS and the new signing and you have a massive go at getting as high as you can in the Premiership for one more season with those top players. If we get into Europe, maybe they will stay and give us another season.Selling Olise would be the biggest mistake ever. That famous front three will be gone and i am not sure it would work as good without him.We must not sell anyone else other than the old worriers and Ghehi.Parish and the rest will have to keep that squad together or else we will still be a team fighting relegation and hoping to finish around 14th.

I think the only "bounce" Glasner has had has been on the fan base. The atmosphere at games and mood of the fan base has been completely transformed. And that was pretty much immediate.
As you say any bounce in terms of the team is more like a transformation of playing style, fitness and mindset among the squad. Long may it continue.

Really good review. I said a few weeks ago on a fan site my biggest concern is keeping Glasner and his team. I generally wouldn’t rule out a top 6 finish next season and that includes a 4th place finish. That is based on Glasners mindset, the jan arrival of Wharton and Munoz. Mateta comments about texting the coaching staff. Lots of little details to read into as well as observing player body language on and off the field. You can see the hunger to grow and I feel we suddenly have the perfect combination. The key now is can we keep the team together for one season, perhaps sadly selling Guehi to fund improvements. Franca and Dacoure can both develop in this style. Most exciting period for the club. Tip of the iceberg would be main stand development commencing

Ive noticed this as a neutral, the media bang on about eze and olise as if theyre a 2 man team. Palace have looked extremely good under glasner and next season could emulate the form of teams like Brighton (sorry to name drop them 😂) and west ham over the past couple of years (European football combined with decent premier league finishes).

Agree with all this. For me when we conceded the 4th to City, we then started pressing properly for the last 20 minutes of that game with no fear, and had some success pegging them into their own half. I think maybe that gave the players real belief to fully get on board, and then Liverpool and especially the first half against Newcastle for me, was outstanding.

Dan, gr8 video , enjoyed it very much. I've been a Palace fan since the 70s.
I agree, it's not a "bounce" , as it's taken time for Glasners work to come thru ...
The new manager and his staff have focused on getting the players fitter as he said to quote "you need to train not for games over a 90mins but 100mins" . You can see the contrast in managing the whole squad regarding the contrast in tactics, which is factual, not disrespectful...
I'm waiting to see if Glasner can convince the players like Eze and Olise to stay, nothing is written in stone , we just have to wait and see.
Wharton is improving every game. Everyone in the squad has improved in every way.
Glasner when he first took over, the team was lacking fitness, and we had a lot of key injuries, the change has been steady progress, we've got players back now, which were ruled out of contention by the previous manager back on the bench.
Yes Dan, I agree the training camp away , and the interval , was a great help.
When previous managers have taken over like Tony Pulis, Big Sam, it took time for their way to get results...
I'm happy for all the fans seeing proactive football which most of us knew the potential was there , but needed the right person to come in and Glasner and his staff are doing a fantastic job with the team as a whole....
I listen at home on the radio , due to health issues, highlights I've seen on Motd... we're all looking forward to games now positively, whereas before it was different, no disrespect there.
Thanks Dan , keep up the good work m8!

It’s a solid analysis mate - he clearly knows what he’s doing and is getting them to play for him. As you point out, it took a few games so the bounce idea is dead wrong. Obviously the big question is can you keep it all together when ‘bigger’ clubs decide to cherry pick. Even if you do lose players, it’ll be for good money and the manager will know others he can trust and adapt. Get carried away pal… the future is bright 👍

Unfortunately no one even mentions Palace. The only mentions of Palace is when they mention that Olise, Eze, and Guehi are too good to play at Palace. It’s frustrating at times, just hope that Palace is prepared to replace these guys. My fear is that their sale will fund new stand not be reinvested in the squad.

    • @HLTCOMEDIA
      @HLTCOMEDIA  6 месяцев назад

The money for the new stand is already ring-fenced, there won’t be any resting on laurels given the manager, he will have had assurances, I’m sure.

*Commenting before watching whole video. Do you know what I think people are worried because of the positivity when Patrick came in and we was playing superb stuff aswell but I must admit I’m a bit worried that it’s a bounce 🤣 However he’s a much better coach than PV Cv wise I am Excited. Even if Olise and Guehi go if we can reinvest that money wisely it can start a proper rebuild and be a blessing in disguise. Keep up the good work matey ❤️💙

If what I read this morning 3rd June, re Sir Alex of Man Utd in talks with Dougie Freedman on the possibility on the selling of Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, 22, this summer, as a Palace fan we can forget all the current hype and excitement for next season because if this selling goes ahead that the heart of the team gone and if I were Mr Glasner I would say he was taken on under false pretences, and not to mention the interest that Wharton is generating, Palace is a supply club to the high and mighty because money talks.

  • @ThreeRunHomer

Eze and Olise would be insane to leave. Glasner’s system is perfect for them to become big stars.

Up the mighty palace, can't wait for next season, I'm resigned to the fact thst Guehi will go but if Eze and Olise both stay then we could legit play Europe.
With a fit Doucoure is it just as simple as him coming in for Hughes ? Hughes has been great but Doucoure and Wharton could form a top midfield duo, also Lerma could well slot into cb.

    • @HLTCOMEDIA
      @HLTCOMEDIA  6 месяцев назад +1

I think Doucoure and Wharton together could be practically unstoppable. I’d imagine Olise and Guehi may go but the money from them would be well in excess of £100m, invest 60-70% of that and we’d be laughing.

My comment isn’t meant to be dismissive of what you’ve said. I agree that Crystal Palace have been excellent lately and it’s good to see you do well.
