- Today I visit Broadway Market just next to London Fields. First a coffee from Climpson and son coffee and roasters. A look at all the amazing street food on offer at the Saturday market. I get lunch at F Cooke pie and mash shop on Broadway Market. F.Cooke's sell meat pies and mash and eels. Hot eels or jellied and cold, all available to enjoy in the restaurant or too go. Then a beer in the cat and mutton pub.

Lovely grub. Used it regularly. I’m 94 now.
Love long
Truly the best pie and mash shop in London
love these real!!! londoners
I actually gave up eating meat, and don’t live in the UK anymore. But I grew up eating this stuff and it brings back such a fierce wave of nostalgia. The eels with my old man and the pie and tater with my dear mum. Both gone now and always missed. If I was back “home” I’d struggle not to go and get double double with liquor
i gave up pie n mash back in the 80's coz i stopped eating meat. Cookes in dalston was my childhood pie shop in the main. i was watching a news article on local northern tv ( i moved out of hackney in the 90's) and Bob was being interviewed. in the window i could just see a sign saying vege pies available. Gawd was i on a high until we travelled back to see folks and rekindle that childhood feast once more and i haven't looked back since.
Great thing is that my boys (all adults love the stuff too). Sad Bob has made decision to close. nearest vege pie (soya type) is Kelly's in Roman road market. So if you get over to uk again some time, head over there.
I used to travel down to broadway having moved out of Hackney in the 1990's to visit family we'd always head straight to Bob's because he made vege (soya) pies which i discovered watching a local news item where i live where Bob was being interviewed,
Bob used to allow us to use the loo on 1st floor which was still in it's original victorian tiled condition.
My Dad, worked in the Broadway shop when he was demobbed from army circa 1948
I lived near there in the 60s. Haven’t been there since 1970. It was dead when I lived there.
This was wonderful to watch., where I lived, my family., for a lifetime...just a point., the market was still thriving in the 50/60/70...the decline came around the 80/90.,
But like all good things., the Market turned around., came back fighting. I have left this wonderful part of London where I grew up..I leave to the next generation., please take care of it.....much love to Cookes.....how I miss your pie and mash.
Very nice keep it up I always appriciate
Your hard work stay safe stay connected
👌👍💖💜💙💚
Quite frankly, here in Texas we don't eat eels but I enjoy seeing how others do their food so thank you.
That market is buzzing! Deffo want to try pie eels & mash.
Your such a good tour guide, I watch all of your stuff and really enjoy walking with you . You always have the history down and I thank you for all the research you do . Have a great day in beautiful London and look forward to your next adventure around the city.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video

Jellied eels are an aphrodisiac. I had 10 last week but only 2 of them worked.
cool market!!! LOL the pub review. fab fun video again lad :) cheers keep em coming!
Thanks for watching & commenting! Glad you liked the video.
Been there a few times, great guy, I actually got very intrigued with pie and mash shops when I moved from Wales to London, they became my go too food outlets, mostly because it's cheap as hell and you get a LOAD of food!
Thankyou for your interesting videos 👍🏻 subscribed
You are so lucky how i miss good old Pie mash living up north they just don't do it. nice video cheers.
I would love to try that. Looks really good.
Thank you for the Broadway history lesson
Very nice job and videos! Well done!
Thanks! Glad you liked the videos
I was looking for the Market House pH, but couldn't see it. We used to come from the pub and go over the road to 'Cookesies' for pie and mash Fridays or Saturdays in the sixties. Great social life all round that area then. The 'all on' stall at Ridley Road late nights used to open all the time, catering for people coming home from theatre, cinema, pubs or parties and all the cab drivers. They made lovely tea and coffee, and you could sit in your car and talk whilst enjoying a liver and bacon 'all on'. Any one know if these places are still there? Thanks for the nostalgia trip, much appreciated! XXX
I want to try a Pie Mash and Eel shop. I want to taste the liquor, super curious.
Mandi May a good one in Camden Town Chapel Market. Mandi.
Love pie and mash
New to your channel and am really enjoying it man👍
That gravy is so unusual. I saw a video where it was made with potato starch instead of flour or cornstarch.
That looks bloody lush . I could eat that right now
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video
Great footage Robert!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the vlog - yeh its a great place to people watch.
Great vuds Robert I miss London here in Oz!
Nice robert
That was cool .. love looking round Broadway Market, been there a few times .. your right - it’s gone upmarket over the years re buyers/browsers etc .. very much love the canal and further down is Hackney City Farm .. a small affair but lovely to go to with or without children .. I’ve been to most of London’s markets over the years, nothing like a good old London street market, upmarket or just the ordinary everyday ones. .... one can see the way London is heading now by the gentrification of the street and indoor markets, Spittlefields is a prime example, redeveloped from a market of many many many stalls, to built up indoor uber expensive shops with the “designer product” stalls now being at the bottom .. Portobello, where I come from originally before moving East, is another prime example on its weekend days, full of young people saying yah, that’s not bad in itself but markets are out pricing the beauty of what London street markets were all about, the fun/laughter/banter, and most of all - cheap bargains etc ......
Saw enormous amount of
Denim. Still popular since
the 1970s, I guess.
Hi Robert I really miss that Pie and Mash here in Australia!
Not the eels I guess. You got plenty there
you should try pie factory in Whitechapel, London E1 its really nice! 😊
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the vlog!
The Pie and Mash shop is closing this spring!! Such a shame.... grew up on it.
I’m going there on the Saturday 25th of November for my first pie and mash and liquor
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
Great video. Thanks for the info. It looks so cold there! You should check out our Winters in Sydney - sunshine and blue sky most of the time! X
Thanks! Yeah this was a couple of weeks ago now so its a bit warmer now. The weather here is very unpredictable all the time.
As a northerner I was highly dubious about eating pie and mash with parsley sauce but do you know it works not sure about the jellied eels though
Anthony Bourdain went to this restaurant.
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
Hahaha...fake tan and a beard? Sounds like the hipster bars here in the U.S. They're everywhere Robert...😂
Another great video. 10 more weeks and counting...✈️🇬🇧
Thanks for commenting! Glad you enjoyed the video
Did you ever do one on Walthamstow Market ,The Markets gone down a bit but has a Manzie's pie and mash.
No I've not vlogged in Walthamstow
I went there, was proper and good price aswell,i should open a pie n mash shop up here in east mids ...and then 10 will open lol
Looks amazing. Having not had eel before, is there a fish that it is comparable to? Thanks
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video
Salmon
+Roberts London lol not even reading the comments
I live in Southern California,
fairly comfy, but unstimulating. With "13 channels of (blank) on the TV to choose from." --The Wall 1980.
New camera? Super Hi Def Another great London Show Robert!
Thanks! No same camera - Canon G7X
I've heard it's not super common for restaurants to have this but can you recommend a good place to get cottage pie/shepherd's pie?
The Ivy
is F Cooke still there? hope so. cheers
its now 2019 n i herd that pie n mash store is now closed what a pity
The green liquor , I’m from Texas, love gravy , but green stuff ? , what does it taste like
It's just a parsley sauce. Very unobtrusive but they have bottles of chilli vinegar on the tables which you sprinkle into the liquor to make it come alive with zing. It doesn't look appetising but once you try it you'll be hooked.
F is for Fred. All the eldest Cooke boys are called Fred.
Pie and mash should be eaten with a spoon and fork. Cut the pie with the side of the spoon. And then scoop it up with spoon or use the fork.
Interesting that the market is almost exclusively white, except for the visitors to the uniform shop, which caters to half the primary/secondary schools in Hackney.
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
Freshy009 wrong .born and bred in Broadway house. Back of the Market. The Area is now mostly Asian Black.and many more Cultures. As a Kid .there where no Immigrants then
@@eddiemurphy5781 that's why all the pie and mash shops have closed no Londoners left. Breaks my heart how London's changed for the worst.
I have never eaten an eel. I don't know if they are even available here. I shall try one next time I am in London though.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the vlog - eel is not that widely available or popular here now as it used to be but a few places still do it
Did you taste that plate of food first, before you put salt pepper and hot sauce on?
North Sea Brent you think that was hot sauce?!🤣
The market is nothing like that now days I live a round the corner to the market there are only a few stalls
All these places are gentrified now which has boosted the areas but the chirpy Cockney is now hard to find, i feel like a dinosaur that no longer exists in this world
Not quite sure what you mean by rectal rhythm?
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
With the fashionable vegan trend sweeping London, i think the long-established Pie and Mash shop's days are numbered...such a shame.
They have started selling vegetable pies.
A lot have sadly closed down but some still survive. If you fancy some pie, mash & eels I can recommend Golden Pie at Clapham Junction. It's very near the magistrates court and police station.
Suneel Gaur not for the eels!
Are they 2 F Cooke in London?
yes
which one original? and which one would you recommend?
Knees up muvver bwaarn..
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video
what is gentrification?
Doug Nish .. gentrification is Social Cleansing of the poor to make way for the rich .. it’s happening all over London with huge Council Estates being sold off by councils to property developers as starters. A very sad time, it could mean that London as we knew it, the vibrant city where everybody, rich-poor, all nationalities all got along and rubbed shoulders, maybe not the rich lol, will disappear under a blanket of blandness, empty streets and only people with money, and lots of it, living here. It’s happening in other major U.K. cities also ...
Cooke Pie & Mash is sadly no longer 😢 .
One pie and mash look enough then the liquid er spuds good
Broadway market.. if you want to be served by an ungrateful hipster for an overpriced coffee or vegan burger... it’s a paradise
A Cooke and F Cooke are they family
How come it's not raining. And where's the Fog
Thanks for watching & commenting! Glad you liked the video.
Sadly now closed down
Why does everything get seasoned before you take a bite 😂
tis the proper way
Biltong nettl
Can tell the boys a tourist. Pie was the wrong way up, he's eating off the fork and they're stewed eels not hot eels!
Gentrification the worst £10 a pint.And £5 for a cupcake.
Don’t get much mash for one portion innit
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
hugh kelly yeh the Broadway market pie n mash are very stingy with the mash potato so I don't go to that one any more.I go to the pie n mash shop in hoxton market where they give you more mash
Fucking hell they cremated the pie..
Un ti fa troppi primi piani perche' si rompe la telecamera😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video
Some nice fanny about as well.
It looks so sad there
Welcome to England :(
Why did you not interview Mr. Cook, the grandson, owner of the eel and mash shop? Seems like a waste to not speak to the owner who was standing right there, and could have given his perspective of the changing area where his shop has been since 1900s.

Looks a mess tbh
BUT MEAL PRICES PLUS PIE AND MASH ARE UNLAWFULLY WELL ABOVEW THE LEGAL PRICES TO KEEP IN RELATION WITH BENEFITS, PENSIONS AND WAGES RISES FROM 1975 WHICH HAVE ONLY RISEN CIRCA 5 TIMES. IN 1975 THE AVERAGE PRICE OF A FIRST MEAL COURSE WAS 35 TO 50 PENCE, SO THEREFORE THE LEGAL MAXIMUM OF A MEAL IN 2020 LEGALLY IS NOTHING OVER £2 50 MAXIMUM !!!!. SO MOST CAFES ECT ARE WELL BREAKING THE LAW AND NEED PROSECUTING FOR OVER CHARGING AND IF THEY DO NOT LOWER THEIR PRICES ASAP THEY SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN IMMEDIATELY !!!!.
good content but bad camera work - stop spinning your camera, 360° RUclips videos never caught on for good reason ... because they SUCK!
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
Backround music junked another video👎🏻💩
Have you ever thought about getting Botox on your forehead in order to look more like a feline than a human being. Plastic surgery is so in right now.
Have you Southerners never heard of gravy? That green stuff looks disgusting
Sure have it's what you put on your roast dinner😀
@@MrPotmonster And not your chips....dirty bastards!
What's that green vomit stuff they put on it? Looks gross. I'm glad I'm not a Londoner!
So am i👎
So are we.
