We do have savory pie in the US: Pot Pie. They are mostly sold in grocery stores to make at home, but you do run across them at restaurants from time to time. But it's rare to run across a "pie and mash shop" like this, although we did have one in Seattle for many years!
Love me some Pizza Puffs!
Sane here in England but London Eel and Pies are something specific.
I'd try the jellied eel, only because it's weird and I have to. But I'm pretty sure it's not something I'd ever order a second time. The pies look amazing. Especially the second one with the dark gravy.
We have a similar food in eastern-central Europe ( mainly Slavic countries ) which is pork aspic. Basically, jellied pork bits of fat, meat and occasionally organs. It is cooked the same way, sat in jelly over night and in the morning its a block. Texture is easy to imagine if you didn't had it before: think jello + boiled salty meat.
Let me say this: even though it's a traditional food where I come from, I hate it. Disgusting. Not the meat, but because it is set in slimy jelly. Just nope. That pie tho looks heavenly.
@captain.2721 if your huspenina was slimy, it went bad. You're really eating rotten food and then complaining about it as if everyone makes it that way😐
Pie & mash ONLY comes with 'liquor' .
America does actually have a meat pie that’s called mince meat which may include a suet beef. I grew up eating it because it was a cheap meal especially for five boys growing up.
Don't have Jellied ells often nowadays, I always feel like I'm in the 1950s-1960s when i have it!! it's good in a strange good way.
I'd love to try the jellied eels!
Try it! It has a mild fish flavour & the jelly is creamy & smooth, but be careful not to bite into the bone!
Yes, we have meat pies in the US.
Savoury pies are great. That food looks so good. Cheers, Ariel! ✌️
Glad you enjoyed your time in Greenwich, where I live. Pie & Mash needs the same combo of salt & vinegar, that you put on the eels. The pies are not just meat pies, the pastry is a suet pastry(the recipe is on You Tube). I love jellied eels, they're amazing, and they're very tasty.
I had no idea that the US didn't do savoury pies! I hope you're going to enjoy many good Melton Mowbray pork pies while you're here. They are heaven! If you cook, maybe you could make your own meat pies when you get home. Start a new trend!
Oooh yes! Will be having some Melton Mowbray pies, love them!
Chicken pot pies?
we have them only here they are called pot pies.. same size and shape
We have savory pies!
We do, chicken pot pies, beef stew type pies. You just won't really find a pie shop that specializes in meat pies. It's more of a side and usually small.
Looks like a little snack for you there to keep you going between main meals 😉
Looks yum! May try it out next visit UK and London.
That looked excellent, well done for being brave and positive about the food.
Absolutely love jellied eels with pie and mash ❤
The pie and Mash with peas looks divine, but the "Jellies eels" will make me "gag" - LOL!
You should come to the Southern US and try chicken pot pie.
I heard grits taste good 😬😬
Absolutely.
As an American pie and mash sounds good. It's the jellied eels where I question if it sounds nasty 🤢. Would definitely still try tho
All looks absolutely amazing
These pies look exponentially better than the one from the fiasco 😆
I think me and you are the only Americans that hasn't spit out the eel in disgust. Goddards is a pretty good place. It beats the touron joints.
I’m real into makin this dish at home, and cider but it’s Saint Patrick Day today so it will be a soda bread for Ireland
You’ve made me want pie and mash and gravy for dinner ☺️ Food looked very tasty (but I might pass on the eels 😉).
You might be surprised by the eels! But haha glad I got you in the mood!!
I will pass on both eel and gravy, it's made out of eel juice 🤢
@@janolaful sounds great to me
I couldn’t think of anything worse than cold eels with that jelly, strawberry jelly and ice cream that’s a different story yummy 😋
You are a good sport. Enjoy your findings.
Hi Ariel, these are known as pub foods, I used to patronise English pubs for my lunch whilst I was living and working in London, England and they served great foods...hope you enjoyed it...regards from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
Delicious. Excellent value.
Are you visiting York while you're in the UK?, one of my fav historical cities in the UK along with Bath.
In America, we have chicken pot pie, turkey pot pie, crawfish pie, Natchitoches meat pie, Michigan pasty, pizza puffs,...
You can pretty much recreate everything he ate in this review including the eels in North America, The liquor (first sauce) is just parsley/garlic laden chicken stock. The Jelly from the eels is just the same that happens with chicken, when boiled it becomes gelatinous. A pie of course is all about experience. I had a phase of doing this. It takes a lot of time to do this for a few people. The best cheat is to make a really good stew, then put in oven tins with store bought (butter) puff pastry only on the top. Not sure if there is a substitute in North America for beef concentrate like OXO, if not it is worth pursuing OXO cubes for the rich gravy on the second pie,
Next time just have pie mash and liquor, no peas on top. Other pie mash shops are nice aswell like Kelly’s down Roman road in bow, robins (there’s quite a few of them) the best are all in east London
Too early here in Reno 10AM PST. To watch you eat those eels , JELLY eels nevertheless. Lol 😂
Glad you’re venturing out and being a BraveHeart with the interesting culinary cuisine.
Reno’s local piss club chapter 44 has pie and mash and jellied eels.
They don’t just let anyone in though and absolutely no blacks. No exceptions.
as an american i find it hard to believe you have never had a steak pot pie, turkey pot pie, or chicken pot pie.. same thing only our pies have veg like peas, carrots, and potato mixed in with it.
We have meat & veg pies over here too but i prefer steak & kidney pie.
He thought the liquor was gravy lol
So did I until I was put right...
try the stewed eels
Americans definitely have meat pies, but they're kind of fading. Me and my family make chicken and beef pot pie, and occasionally venison pie. 💜
are you tryed in london the beef Wellington?
Well done Arial. The oldest Pie Mash shop in London is nr Tower Bridge along Tower Bridge Road, called Manzes. Usually it's just pie mash and Liquor.
The jellied eels are great, also stewed eels and Liquor is gorgeous.
👍🏻👍🏻😁
At last someone who knows what their talking about
We do have meat pies in the United States. Have you forgotten about chicken pot pie?
It’s rare to find a good homemade chicken pot pie in many parts of America
You made me very hungry 🤤
Not a lamb fan but that pie looks good. How was the Thatchers ?
Wow the thatchers is so very good! 😍
A bit off topic, but I never get a YT notification when you uploaded a video only when you‘re live 🤔
Hmm not sure why, try pressing the bell button off and on again
Manzes is the best Pie n Mash
I can’t wait to try it
@@UrbanistExploringCities You must go to the Manzes in Tower Bridge Road, Bermondsey - the shop has its original victorian fixtures and fittings
Hey Ariel.. question of interest/ curiosity...DO YOU COOK?...just wondering ...😊
I do :D From time to time I love to cook and bake. why you ask? 😁
Don't remember ever having peas with pie and mash
that's because its been corrupted by a none native who doesn't know any better
Common to add chilli vinegar and white pepper to the eels. Most people order stewed eels in the pie shops to have with their pie n mash which has the liquor added. (The liquor is parsley sauce made with the juice that the eels were cooked in)
Gravy is served with pies in the north of England with Henderson’s relish or mint sauce.
Also with the bones proper cockney way is pop the whole piece of eel in and spit the bone out.
Glad to see you enjoyed it and sorted out traditional culture. 👏
Great tip! And glad you enjoyed my foray into London culture 😂
Thick gravy is lush over chips 🍟
Heated up eels is better, with a fresh buttered bread
Pie looks lovely but I’ll pass on jellied ells.
Same here 😬
Mushy peas is not traditional? It's just the pie mash and parsley liquor!
Where is this shop, and what is the name.
Goddards in Greenwich, London
👍
USA has meat pies..like chicken pot pie..
😋
We have pot pies though
I forgot to say plenty of pepper and chilli vinegar on both dishes
That's not gravy, its liquor and you need chilli vinegar with it - and NO to the peas lol.
Chilli vinegar 😬
Parsley liquor, right? I just saw this shop on another RUclips channel.
@@cremebrulee4759 Yes! It's delicious!
Bro you English don’t know how to eat
A Fairy got of the Ferry
Nice!
Lost me at eels 😳🖐🏽😄
I’m curious why this guy believes we don’t have meat pies in America?
OUAIS
TIENS LA BIEN
PENNY
It hasn't been open since 1890
That Goddards is very new to Greenwich and a tourist trap
With that many different pies on the menu it's not traditional at all
And to put mushy peas on your liquor the member of staff should of been sacked
No,No, No! Mushy peas with Pie n Mash! Wot are you talking about!
Arments Pie n Mash. Westmoreland Rd, S.E.17 Takeaway Delivery across the country.
Double Double: Double Pie, Double Mash, not ice cream scooped either, Liquor, Chilli Vinegar, a cuppa Tea, not beer, ever!
Jellied Eels, pepper, chili vinegar,
And learn to use cutlery, just like our three year olds!
Noisy...
that is NOT GRAVY
Don't have pies with pie n mash mate
A pub in Bristol refused to sell Thatchers Beer as a response to the former prime minister whom the proprietor disliked. Silly. The name has nothing to do with her.
This is great food for people with no teeth
Not PUFF pastry and not gravy. For the lords sake! 🙄
No way I would even try jellied eels...😬
mushy pies with pie mash is not traditional.
Wrong pie & mash shop, totally for tourists, no real pie & mash shop would sell mushy peas
WTF no self respecting true Londoner/ cockney would eat that served up like this. the pie should be made with minced beef and the pastry should be 2 types a suet base and a short crust pastry lid and the liquor should be made of fish stock flour and parsley. And the order should 2 pies 2 mash 1 liquor and no BLOODY PEAS. If the pie shop does not have marble top tables with bench seats don't go in they aint been at it long enough also there should be chilli vinegar and pepper on the tables. Try the p/m shop in Sutton High street [Surrey] its about as good as they come there is also a good one in Tooting just off of the high street. i was eating pie and mash when i was 3 the shop was in The Cut in Lambeth sadly its not there anymore. if someone served me up a dinner that looked like that he would be wearing it
Pie with peas is australian. Served as a option, a scoop under the pie's lid. Firm, not runny.
What's all this bleedin' nonsense with pie, mash and JELLIED eels? Pie, mash and STEWED eels. Totally different.
Pie and mash and peas yuk, jellied eels, no way!
They have Italian, German, Spanish, Greek, and even Russian and Polish restaurants within 5 miles of me. Yet I have never seen a British restaurant in the U.S. Having been all over Europe, I have to say UK food is the least like American food. It is revolting. That disgusting meal this guy ate proves my point. Thank God we jettisoned our British roots when it comes to food.
Ignorant rubbish. America has flooded the globe with junk food , has spray can cheese , beer that is just flavoured water and can't even make decent chocolate.
Goddards definitely isnt the best pie and mash in london and you should have had stewed eels not jellied
You won't find a good piece and mash at Goddards ... awful embarrassment for a pie and mash shop... from someone who loves pie and mash you couldn't pay me to eat at that place
WTF never with mushy peas, they belong in a fish and chip shop and stewed eels tasted better than jellied, Better visit the East End for traditional pie and mash next time, not a poncey frilly restaurant in greenwich
First of all that's not proper pie and mash, and you don't have jellied eels with pie and mash, would you eat a hamburger and chips with a salmon. Jellied eels are eaten like you would a tapas in Spain.
What the hell is going on there, peas on east end pie n mash, that’s just wrong, totally wrong
I'm London born and bred and I honestly don't know anyone that eats pie and mash with liquor!!! It's awful. LOL. I get embarrassed when tourists try it, presuming it is actually popular. And do not even start me with jellied eels, FFS!
WHAT!!! I was introduced to pie and mash and LIQUOR when i was 3 back in the 50s by my mum let me guess you put gravy and ketchup on yours. I don't know any TRUE Londoners who eat it without parsley liquor and chilli vinegar
Eels looks disgusting 😬
The popularity goes down as the native English demographic is forced out and replaced by 'non-English' people. Did you notice anything about the demographic in the pie shop? London isn't an English city, it's a globalists' dumping ground & science experiment theme park. Glad you enjoyed the food anyway.
You must be fun at parties.
It’s not party talk, it’s facts about societal decay especially over the last 20 years
@@BlueSkiesAbove39 I mean, I could always stick my head in the sand and not notice my capital city is minority English and it has rapidly changed in just a few decades, got any funny tiktok dancing videos, brahh?
@@New-ei8qp Just for my amusement define who and why you regard as 'English'.
@@New-ei8qp Glad you awoke from your slumber and managed to respond to my after a year. Please explain how London is a 'globalists' dumping ground & science experiment theme park'.
