Thank you for highlighting our fight for our library! We have been speaking out for almost a year at every city council meeting, but our majority doesn’t care what we say. Hopefully, the extra scrutiny that we’ve been getting from all areas of media will make them think again about privatizing our library. Also, my son was one of the speakers highlighted here! Proud mama here, especially since my daughter also spoke.

I am the first public commentator in the video. Thank you for highlighting what is happening in Huntington Beach, CA. The HBCC majority feels that they have a mandate to do whatever they want. They were elected by 13.6-12.3 percent in 2022. That is hardly a mandate. We clearly have a voter problem as in not enough people are exercising their civic responsibility. That is how we end up with a dare I say radicalized, fascist leaning, Christian nationalist majority. They do not listen to residents and vote per their party line (despite the council seats being non-partisan). Mayor Gracey van der Mark is pushing anti sex education and book banning which she has been doing since at least 2015. She had planned to hold a literature burning even at HB State beach several years ago (I have a screenshot of her response). She is not a good faith advocate for books and certainly not the Huntington Beach library system.

Hi! Thank you for sharing this information! Libraries serve as a cultural center for the community, and I hope the library system can always remain non-partisan!

Wendy, I'm really sorry to read this. Hang in there and keep up the good work. I'm very glad to see this video (I did a remix of the John Oliver one a few weeks ago too and in the description there I have listed all the references / news items on what's happening) but I don't have the reach of Cathy here.

Thank you for this excellent video. It’s hard to understand why the HB City Council majority continues with this obviously unpopular move. The latest research (done by the city’s labor unions) shows that the community overwhelmingly supports the library.

It would be such a shame to outsource this gem library to a for-profit organization! Clearly the city council is not acting in the interest of the Huntington Beach citizens…

Huntington Beach Public Library is a financially healthy, well-managed library--in fact, one of the most efficiently run in the state. If LS&S, a for-profit private corporation, run by a private equity fund, takes over the staffing, collection, and programing, it will be devastating for the city of HB. The track record for LS&S privatized libraries is not good. Recently, Mission Viejo and Fullerton, CA rejected their offer, and Santa Clarita returned to public status after losing money while contracting with LS&S. They also lost a large portion of their book collection because LS&S prefers libraries with a smaller amount of books and materials for checkout.

A rich and diverse collection is crucial for a thriving community, if existing collection were to be cut, where would they end up? Disposal or "donation"?

Sooner or later companies will own all the libraries and every bar everything

That's a scary scene to imagine, but let's stay optimistic 😊
