The subsidies could be seen as just giving money to the already wealthy for their new status symbol. If you are in the market for an ev you are in a financially strong position to begin with and probably don’t need the help. Most people would rather we build more rail, bus, metro and bike infrastructure that everyone can avail of and is the fairest use of our tax euros. We should be building as much as we can with our current surplus so that when the next crash comes at least we will have a decent transport system to show for it.

I know what we should do, we just need to buy electric cars when the majority of cars on the road in the USA are electric.

The electric grid won't be able handle the demand, you can't have data centres and a majority electric car ownership in Ireland.
Realistically electric cars will to have a range of at least 700 to 800km and super fast charge speeds of 5 to 10 minutes max.
Also this narrative that is better for the environment is wrong, it would be more environmental friendly for you to drive a 1960s 4 litre Mustang than to buy a new electric car. The sheer amount of energy that is used in the total production of EVs is astonishing.
