Ive been waiting for this video for a long time. Ive seen others touch on ibin sina but its about time we got more serious information on how to approach him. As always more digestible aristotle is always appreciated.
Sayyid, with regards to your previous ibn arabi reading list video, it was oriented towards non-arabic speaking learners. Can you at some point make one for individuals that are fluent in both English and Arabic? The prerequisites for fususul-hikam, and theoretical Irfan in general, in traditional seminaries is roughly (mantiq al-muthaffar -> bidaya -> some of nihaya -> al asfar -> fusus). What are your opinions on this approach, and given that Western scholars have written about Ibn Arabi and his philosophy extensively, would you recommend an English-Arabic hybrid reading list? Jazakallah
If you’re fluent in both English/Arabic as well as Farsi this channel is an amazing resource , very broad, beautiful wide range of scholars and topics. Please excuse me for commenting but I would love to see Saiyad on there. youtube.com/@hira-hadi?si=-r_Nob_rTeVJ1lV7
Hi Professor, Thank you for the video! I wonder if you could touch a little on how Muhsin Mahdi and other Straussians read Ibn Sina and other Islamic philosophers? Thank you again for your work!
I am not aware of Muhsin Mahdi writing on Ibn Sīnā, but he did work a lot on al-Fārābī and he read him wrongly. Leo Strauss was no scholar of Islamic philosophy. Perhaps I will make a video on this in 2025 in shāʾ Allāh. In the mean time I suggest you read this paper which criticises Strauss' approach (you may find a PDF version on JSTOR): Oliver Leaman, "Does the Interpretation of Islamic Philosophy Rest on a Mistake?", International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES), Dec. 1980, vol. 12, No. 4, pp. 525-538,
Hello Professor, thank you for the wonderful upload. I am a Christian, but have a deep interest in medieval Islamic philosophy. Out of curiosity, do you know of any online Master’s programs in Arabic that are reputable? I have a decent foundation in Arabic, but want to shore up my skills before beginning doctoral work.
I assume you are not in the Arab world. You will have to search online. Unfortunately, most of the big online Arabic booksellers in the UK and the US are salafi and thus do not carry works on philosophy.
Assalamu Alaikum Dr. Ahmad, Is it possible for you to make a series of videos on Divine names of Allah SWT and how to calculate the appropriate name for a particular person to invoke, number of times of invocation, and when to invoke? And also the particular type of dilemma that can be overcome with the invocation of each name. I really liked your playlist on Islamic Occult Sciences but as a non-Arabic speaker with only rudimentary knowledge in Urdu, Ilm-ul-Huroof or Ilm-ul-Jafar (I think that's what it is called) is not something which I can teach myself right now. A response from you regarding this matter would be highly appreciated. Thank you for taking your time to make today's video. Make sure you to make a special 10,000 subscribers live video once you reach that number of subscribers. May Allah SWT grant you Al-A'afiyah. Regards, Aakash Rabbi
Salam, what is your opinions on Parviz Morewedge's translation/commentary on Danishnama? I heard Morewedge's works on Avicenna are pretty poor scholarship, but I haven't been able to find a better translation w/ commentary.
I read it many years ago and found it useful at the time. The original language of the Dānishnāma is Persian, but I have not read it so I cannot say how good the translation is.
sayidna coming up with bangers one after another

If you read Arabic, just read the books in Arabic. Knowledge of the other works you mention is also good.
All these books are available in pdf for free.
