This is one of the most underrated Journey songs ever. Augeri didn't get much respect for some of the great music Journey put out while he was singing lead.
Yes indeed underrated good singer Cheer's 🍻👍
Agreed
WHAT "great music"?
As great as when Steve Perry was part of Journey?
Or when Neal Schon was 40 pounds lighter?
Who is singing
One of my favs from Augeri era
Steve Augeri is under-rated! Castronovo's backup vocals are amazing.
That last high note Deen hits. Damn.
I have to agree. I wish they kept Steve. I love journey but one big criticism I have is with their personnel changes. They’ve made some bad decisions over the years. Maybe the worst one was when Steve Perry fired Steve Smith and Ross Valory. That was pretty lame. Anyway yeah, nothing against Arnold but I definitely preferred Steve Auteri.
That’s an understatement!!! Next to Steve Perry…he’s the best singer that the band has ever had!!!
Dean can sing lead too. He sounds exactly like Steve Perry. Search RUclips .
@@Atomykpimp I already have…search Revolution Saints
Is it just me or has anybody else noticed the Castronovo is slamming the shit out of the drums and holding all the high harmonies, and very impeccably might I add, He worked very well with Augeri
My favorite Journey harmonies. All eras. A drummer friend I know said that drumming with high harmonies is even harder than leads. (Especially the variety/improvisation that Deen gives them.)
He is incredible. Smashes the crap out of those skins, and is a great singer in his own right.
Deen's awesome, drumming and singing! 💜
Castronovo used to play drums in church years ago maybe that's why
I’m obsessed with Deen!! 🥰
God this song has such a good hook! Steve Augeri was such a good frontman!
This album is so good! It deserved more praise than it got. Steve Augeri really did a fabulous job singing for Journey during this time. Love Journey! ♥
Augeri totally killed it on arrival. Super underrated.
Arrival was a VERY Underrated Jouney Album. If it had come out during Steve Perry years it would have been just as popular as Frontiers, NO doubt in my mind. Higher Place is an INCREDIBLE tune. One of many great songs from that album. People didn't want to accept Augeri so the album struggled. I loved it, Augeri sounded INCREDIBLE 😉
Same opinion.
This is Steve Augeri's song. Him and Deen singing together is incredible!
No one could ever replace Steve Perry's vocal talents. That being said, Steve Augeri made a great effort and overall, I truly believe this album was very under-rated. It has some great songs on it, with this track being one of the best rockers Journey had done in years. Augeri was not only a good singer, but the man was a total class act and a very nice guy to boot. I sent him an e-mail once and actually got an e-mail back from him...not from an answering service or a web assistant. We talked about family and his voice issues....even about where I was from. I was floored when I received the e-mail and even questioned it being genuine. I really think he got a raw deal from Journey but that's a whole other long discussion. Glad Augeri's voice is better and he is back doing what he loves to do.
MrMike9158 I think that Augeri work hardly to imitate Steve Perry's voice, he's a good singer but there's only one Steve Perry.
+MrMike9158 I couldn't agree more! I had the pleasure to attend a private party that Augeri sang at in Houston. He is as you said, a total gentleman and class act. He actually took time out to speak and hang out with those that attended the event. I've always believed that he took on Journey with complete respect for what Perry brought to the table and then added his own unique sound. It makes me so upset when I hear others bash him for trying to be a "copy-cat." No you idiots, he's a true authentic musician that had a great gig with an awesome band.
+isabellamaria914 Hi Isabella. Thank you for replying to my post. Yes, Steve Augeri is a very nice person. He is very down to earth and despite the fact that he has a beautiful gift in his voice, he just comes across as someone you would enjoy talking to. He is a good example that money does not buy class. Steve never had any desire to be a "copy cat" to Steve Perry and only sang the "hits" as he was instructed to do by Neil Schon. With Steve Augeri being a true Tenor and Steve Perry actually being a Counter-Tenor, it wasn't a natural fit (especially the extended higher ranges) and this is what hurt his voice so bad. I am so glad he is back singing songs in a key he was meant to sing in surrounded by people who actually care about him instead of what he can do for them. Take care.
+Carlos Gonzalez Agreed my friend.
+MrMike9158 sad that he got a chronic throat illness/problem
Journey just got all the best singers...Steve Perry, Steve Augeri, Jeff Scott Sotto & Arnel Pineda......what more can you ask for? THEY ARE REALLY GREAT!
This is one of my all time FAVORITE Journey songs. It's got a high energy to it like Only the Young. Obviously a much different song but a build up to a crescendo chorus, both songs.
It also reminds me of Be Good To Yourself.
Augeri is seriously underrated. He’s really got an incredible voice.
He was great in concert loved the show he is very underrated that's for sure
I agree, I truly believe he saved Journey. If he hadn't come in and done as great a job as he did, journey may have gone into the "Just another band we used to like" category.
He was given the shaft by journey & he kept journey alive to make so much music until they got Arnel
I absolutely loved this version of journey. I seen em live and even tho it was the same music, they had a different vibe about em. Not better or worse, just different which was really cool. Although journey with steve perry will always be untouchable, this version still kicked ass. The addition of steve augeri and the great deen castronovo was crazy good. Im blessed to have had the opportunity to see them live and got to meet the band backstage. They were all super cool guys. Hopefully i get a chance to see journey with arnel. Im glad they are still keeping the music alive✌🏾
@@hippieloveshack3561 Agreed! I would love to see Journey live on their current tour. I wish I had been able to see them with Augeri.
This has to be the BEST Post-Perry song they have written ! ♫
ViciousAlienKlown yes! 👍🌉
Along with Kiss Me Softly
Totally agree. I just discovered this song. Can't believe i hadn't heard it before.
Best post Perry album!
I totally agree. This would have been a BIG HIT had it been written and sang by Perry in the 80's, BUT not sure it for into the style of music back then. It truly is Augeri's Journey tune.
Augeri is an excellent singer and he played a significant role in Journey's history. He cannot be compared to Perry, because they constitute two completely different vocal entities. They are both, however, best at what they do. Respect and admiration to Journey, one of the best bands ever.
This song gives me chills all the time it is playing. Amazing!
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
I saw this line up several times and thought Auger nailed each show as well as doing some of the best Journey songs post Perry. This is a great tune.
I give this man credit...he had some HUGE shoes to fill. No one can replace Steve Perry..but this man is GOOD.
And MUCH better with a REAL stage presence than that little 14 year old bopping around the stage we have now that looks awkwardly out of place with "grown ups " .
I had no idea who he was. But, he did a super job
Golden Girl correct!!!
Great guy met him in 2005 he pulled me up stage when he still with Journey his son is the nicest guy I've ever met! I've eaten lunch with his wife and, there all three wonderful people!
Deen Castronovo on drums... Fantastic!!!
Great singer too
Steve smith actually played better with his rhythmic energy. Deen... not so much.
he is a fucking beast
Yes the best drums ans sing's Cheer's 🍻👍
barbarianlord is a kick ass drummer love to see it plays kind of tommy lee hitting the drums
Love this version - Castronovo beating shit outta those drums and signing the high harmonies too - awesome, Augeri's vocals great, and loved what Schon was doing at the time experimenting with Dropped-D tuning and Sustainers - brilliant track and one of my journey favs.
This song is so good i feel all journey singers should be singing it in concert
Great band, great song. Love the vocal duets before the solo. Incredible! Augeri and Castronovo kicking asses
Deen’s snare during this show could end a war
Steve A. and Deen really compliment each other singing. Wish this Steve was still with the band.
This song definitely has the journey vibe
Holy crap Deen is really feeling it. Awesome performance
I know I'm late to the party, but so happy to read all these comments giving Steve Augeri the respect he so richly deserved. There are SO many Steve Perry sycophants out there who trash him just because his last name isn't Perry. Don't get me wrong, there's only one Perry, and he will always be Journey defined, and probably my favorite pop rock vocalist of all time, but Mr. Augeri was simply great. And it takes nothing away from Steve Perry to appreciate and respect Augeri's awesome work with the band. Cheers!
Augeri was awesome ok and we may not have heard Pineda without Augeri.
Well said
I couldn't have said it better myself.
THANK you! (Late to the party.) it’s like people think you’re being unfaithful to Perry or minimizing his legacy. Here’s the thing -we have people claiming to be Journey fans, but they only want Perry Journey.
You know what that does? It makes those same people b-- and make a big deal about “no new material,” or whatever. Okay, did they purchase this new release when it came out? Or did they just have a temper tantrum? The spirit of Journey is still there. It wasn’t only Perry that had it.
well i just enjoy each journey's phase with perry, with augeri, and pineda!! It's like an evolution, I never criticize them!! each one has magic.
+Tina Reyes Ms. Reyes, your point is well taken. You are much younger than I am so I don't know if you ever had the pleasure of seeing the man who wrote or co-wrote most of their hits actually perform them but he was magical and the way he effortlessly went from octave to octave was stunning. He could take an audience with him. But I agree that both Steve Augeri and Arnel Pinada are humble men and excellent singers in their own right. Thanks for posting.
+Kimber Thomas Kimber, I wasn't meaning to complain or compare. I was just lucky enough to hear Journey live from when they played the bar/club scene (before Steve Perry) to their prime years and in his prime, Perry's voice and vocal range was something to marvel at. I wasn't disrespecting either Augeri or Pinada. In Journey's case, with all due respect, I wish it was about the "music". For the fans, maybe. But for the band (and most classic bands)...they aren't making money selling albums. They make their money touring the hits with sound-a like singers. No disrespect meant...just a fact of life. Neil Schon can tune a guitar but a vocalist who is over 60 can't "tune" voice. I do understand and respect your opinion.
+Tina Reyes amen
What happened to Jeff
Tina Reyes yes he is good. Very good
Yes that's Deen singing the high harmony with Steve in the bridge...amazing!
Deen is awesome. My favorite part of the song.
Both of the smashing it!!!
Deen castronova, epic legend. I was fortunate to see this lineup live and damn he's got some pipes playing the drums at the same time. In the lead up to the last chorus you can hear deen singing a higher harmony and it sounds great. When I saw them he sang open arms from Steve Perry era, you could have closed your eyes and thought it was Steve singing. Effortless. Great range, tone, energy and emotion. All whilst playing a kit. Revolution saints his other band have some great music where he does vocals and drums 🎶
Augeri at his best!! His album Arrival with Journey.
saw him in Chicago at the MRF3! Mr Augeri rocks!
@@AntiJourney - I can only agree!
I was fortunate enough to see Journey live with Augeri at Lake Okoboji in 2002 or there abouts. They did this song and blew everyone away! My gosh, what an amazing band and I have seen them live about 3 times since. Augeri had voice problems prior to his departure and I have to admit I miss his talent and the way cool style he brought to the stage.
Who would still listen to journey with Steve perry back in the band 🎶 👀
I used to have this DVD. I argued with my brother at the time that I thought it was Deen singing the really high parts. He didn't buy it at all... Then years later I find the video of Deen singing "Mother Father"... Now that I listen to this again, it's very clear that Deen is rocking those high notes.
Yup. Deen is singing those high notes. what a talented guy he is
😊
Journey will always be Journey, times change and people change. With whoever is with the band they have stayed with the tradition of fantastic music, stunning performances and playing all the songs we have come to love. We all have our preference as to singers or musicians but lets all get together and realize Journey is still one of the finest bands there has ever been.
I have loved Journey since I was 16 years old. I love Steve Perry. He is such a talented person He is the best of the best. Hands down no questions asked. With that being said and to give credit where credit is due I think this singer has talent in his own right. Journey as a band is talented and they have with stood the test of time. If you keep an open mind and only then you can enjoy this song. I have listened to this song 10 times now and it has grown on me. Long live Journey and of course Steve Perry. We as fans are truly lucky to be able to enjoy both Journey and Steve Perry. My Dad god rest his soul said that the one thing you can count on in life is change. And as with most things he was right.
What I would give to go back and see Journey with Steve Augeri. He wasn't Steve Perry, and didn't try to be. He was himself and did the songs his own way plus helped them write new material! Every singer Journey has had all brought something different to the table and it's all been great! Massive respect to you Mr. Steve Augeri!
Drummer stuff: notice how at around 0:24 Castronovo checks out the hardness of his sticks, and later at 1:41 he tosses his right stick and swiftly grabbed another one, while still maintaining the groove. Surely he felt something wrong with that stick and discarded it. An event that almost went unnoticed.
lou richard Deen always check the stick like that.
Didn't go unnoticed because of I'm sure tons of shots a footage taken they chose to use those shots. They were used for a little dramatic or because they flow well with the feel of the song.
While singing background vocals 🔥
Ross valory has awesome tone on his bass and knows how to play one
i never noticed deen tossing his stick before and didnt miss a beat 🥁🥁🥁
Awesome singer and a class act! Thanks Steve Augeri for Higher Place!! Great song!
これはいい曲だよなぁ
I miss perry alot but I still think this was a frikkin awesome era in Journey history cause that album is great :)
I love all the songs on the ARRIVAL CD, but especially this one and "Loved by You"!
I am the biggest Perry fan ever but this song belongs on Journeys Greatest hits or on the Essential Journey CDs! Had this been a different band or different name this song could easily been on the charts and it's a shame it didn't get major radio play! This belongs right along side When You Love A Woman as far as being a newer song that belongs up there with their best!
augeri was great here!
This 'song' - "Higher Place"... done every night on tour, would have torn out anyone's pipes !! This piece was better released as a record and not part of a regular line up, while touring.
Steve A. does a great job !!
love that part with Castronovo and Augeri singing, they sing well together.
Augeri nailed it, nailed them, and showed a personal and stylish, soft and awesome way of performing as a frontman. Unique
almost everyone has lost their voices and such excellent singers
Touring is tough.
One guitarist to another....NOBODY BENDS THOSE NOTES LIKE NEIL SCHON....Every solo, he consistently sets those frets afire!!!! He's one of the most UNDER-rated guitarists out there. I absolutely love his playing!!
On my playlist EVERY morning
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
Absolutely! members come and go. I thought Steve Augeri was very talented. I don't think Steve Perry is as obsessed with himself as some people on here. Let go and just enjoy the music.
Higher Place
So I think I got it all in place now
No distractions under control
Yet there's something missing inside me
I'm chasing shadows of myself
And the clocks are ticking
Oh my world is spinning
Spinning 'round and 'round
And 'round and 'round again
And I try
I try to reason why
Don't you know I can't go on this way
Baby please don't walk away there is this place
Where I toss away my pride
So you can see that I'm the one
To take you to a higher place this time
I am on the outside looking in
To a place where I will be
Let me give you what you need from me
I surrender my soul to you
And my heart is pounding
And a fire's burning
And my head is spinning, 'round and 'round again
And I try
I try to reason why
Don't you know I can't go on this way
Baby please…
Oh, I crash, and burn inside my mind
It happens time and time again, I can't explain the way you make me feel
Oh, I know, I don't have much to give
But what I have I give to you with all the madness left inside of me
With the madness left inside of me, oh
And I try
I try to reason why
Don't you know I can't go on this way
Baby please don't walk away there is this place
Where I toss away my pride
So you can see that I'm the one
To take you to a higher place this time
This song is definitely a master piece ✨ 👏 🔥 💯 🎵 👌 🙌
He is a great vocalist. He is also a handsome man. I'm glad to hear he is singing again. Much love! Neal you know I think you are the best guitarist of all time! ♥️
Deen is great on this song.. Backing vocal n drumming.. Superb
Arnel STILL gets compared to Perry...imagine what Augeri had to deal with...he broke the mold...he killed this gig and doesnt get the respect...try filling the shoes of a legend...few would be able to sing with confidence unless they were really too young to get it...Steve Augeri got it and still did it...
This IS my favorite song in ALL of Journey's great and immense catalog!!!!!
Steve A should be proud of this one! Great song and performance! Deen kills it too!
You should hear Deen singing "mother, father" absolutely awesome, what a shame he's not with the band anymore...
Love this song! It may have come out in 2000, but is still awesome to listen!
Great song, and agree so underrated. Imo the band never sounded so good and Augeri had a great sound with Dean pounding those drums..and man his vocals were superb too. Hard to find a drummer that can sing like that. Maybe if he sang more Steve would have been able to save his voice, who knows.
When i was like, seven, my dad gave me his old busted up phone, it didn't even work as an actual phone but i adored it, and on the phone he had a saved version of this video and i would listen to it on loop constantly, it was favourite thing, and watching this just gave me so much nostalgia for that
After watching this video for the umpteenth time...WOW what a high energy song!!!!!!!!!! Great drumming by Dean...my God...one of the best rock drummers on the planet!!!!!!!!!!!! And he sounds just like Steve P. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My all-time favorite from Journey (Augeri era).
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
@@leasantos823 I know you must be surprised to receive a message from me right?
Never heard this song before or much else from the Augeri days but this is a damn good song. Very much in the classic Journey vein.
I wonder if Journey as a band now realizes how beloved this era was. It seems glossed over and unfairly so. To some of us, it’s our favorite era… out of all of them. 🤷🏻♀️
Massive fan of Augeri so gutted I never got to see him with Journey his voice is so unique 🖤 will be watching this concert for ever 🎸🤘🏼
3:22 Deen Castronovo amazing on lead vocals!!!
This guy has so much class. I like Pineda's voice and the opportunity they are giving him, but this guy was definitely a worthwhile replacement when Perry went into his meltdown.
This guy is great
A perfect patch
Steve Augerie is a very good vocalist
Bless you Steve
This is by far the best live I've ever heard.
Castroovo's backing vocals are awesome here. They hired a back-up singer for the last tour but the sound still wasn't the same.
who in December 2019, I will not get tired of hearing them 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
GREAT song. Just reading the post below me: "...most underrated Journey song..." That's absolutely true. This is vintage Journey stuff. They opened with it at the Hollywood Bowl many years ago. It was kind of a bummer: I was up ROCKING and some dorky lady behind me says "Could you sit down?" I didn't sit down. But most of those old fogies hadn't heard this new song or new album. These old fogies were all my age...but man, where did all the passion go?! Get up!! I don't know about them. I'm 56 and I'll party like I'm 16!
Wow, I can't believe that Journey is rocking an Ensoniq TS-10!
Awesome! Neal Schon's guitar work on this song is perfect...
CoolPixx23 as it was on the other tracks. Brilliant musician
When ISN"T it? ;)
CoolPixx23 his guitar work on every song is perfect lol
Exactly. Isn't it weird that one of the best albums, especially where Schon is concerned, goes largely ignored today? Schon worked his guitar like never before for this album. Listen to Live and Breathe and every other song on Arrival. Never has so much work gone into such forgotten guitar work.
THEY LOOK ALIKE
One of my all time fav journey songs.
Guys, I don't see a point in spamming all the Journey videos with opinions on who was the best: Perry, Augeri or Arnel. Don't you realise that this song embodies the true spirit of Journey like no other? Let me explain: I am talking about Journey's logo: scarab beetle. I don't know who chose it to be the band's logo but he couldn't have chosen better. In ancient Egypt scarab beetle was a symbol of a worker, rolling a turd ball for eternity. But at some point he would spread his wings and become one of the incarnations of god Amon. To put it simply, there would come a moment that this little fella would realise that he is destined to do things greater than rolling a turd ball for eternity, he would spread his wings and fly trying to reach his dreams. He was a symbol of hope for simple people; hope that one day they would be also able to abandon their miserable lifes and reach the sun. And that's what this song is about: a man who lives a quiet boring life, who at some point realises that this isn't the way he's supposed to live because perhaps there are greater things awaiting him and sets off on his own journey to find a Higher Place. And this is what many other Journey songs are about, this is what this whole band has always been about: hope for a better life and chasing your dreams. Oh wow, wasn't that a long comment. Hope someone will read it
Shon's guitar tone and playing is exceptional.....
As always ..he's one of the best
he is amazing and too under rated
I like Deen Castronovo Awesome 🥁
I love Dean's voice as well...
I love that Augeri and Castronovo part singing together
What a great song shoulda been a radio hit , I loved it since i first heard 20 years ago 👏😎
Holy shit! They were so damn good!! Steve Augeri and Deen Castronovo both on vocals, they really nailed it! Deen is Mr. Groove in person! Cool stuff! Love it!
Steve Augeri sounds soooo much like Steve Perry it's uncanny. The Arrival album, which Higher Place is off, is VERY VERY underated. It has two GREAT ballads,All The Way and With Your Love. Very unique as 99% of bands, whatever their genre, only have one ballad per album except maybe for Air Supply and Chicago who are really Ballad Bands. I think AOR/ Soft Rock artists have the best ballads. Maybe it's because I'm a true romantic at heart even though I'm 49 years old and single❤️❤️😂😂
To me, he doesn’t sound anything like him, and that’s the beauty of it.
This is a post Steve Perry CLASSIC that didn't get the due or deserved 😤 I love this song and album. Love this tune OMG so much energy, Augeri sounded GREAT here 😉
Steve Augeri was also quite amazing. I for one wish him the very, very best.
Great song. Love Castronovo's high 5th harmony vocals on the middle 8. Awesome
I listen almost every day, beautiful sound; deen castronovo is the best music artist !!!!
Badass song/band.Never dissapointed with Journey. One of my favorite bands!
Steve Augeri is very talented singer!!!!!
I love this song.
Allthough this new kid i must say gives it all live in concerts..hats off
Wonderful song. Love the space-rock intro, a hark back to their early years. It all sounds great, Neal monstrously melodic playing sending it into another galaxy.
I LOVEEEEE STEVE PERRY! BUT AS WELL I LOVEEEEE STEVE AUGERI! #ROCKON!♥
Drop D tuning. D minor song and riff. Love it. Love to hear Augeri and Arnel sing songs not written by and for Steve Perry in the post-Perry period. They just sing the song sounding only like themselves--without being forced to sound like Perry on the Perry-era Journey songs. Augeri and Arnel are great singers in their own right.
Deen with sooo much passion! I love Augeri’s dancing. So poised
Steve Augeri was truly a class act, great voice and a real gentleman from everything I’ve heard.
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
Really really bothers me that the minute Augeri was having vocal issues, Journey peaced out on him. Arnel is awesome but Augeri kept the Journey dream alive for nearly 10 years!!! That counts for something....especially when it comes to the Hall of Fame!
Both Steve Augeri and Arnel Pineda were wrongfully snubbed by the Hall of Fame!
@@dank1280 Arnel doesn't have 1 hit to his name , with Journey . You don't get inducted for covering the guy .. who had the hits with them .
@@dank1280 Deen was snubbed. 17 years in the band. Carried some leads. Rocks the high harmonies.
Indeed , I was listening to some Journey songs and I couldn't believe it when I found out it wasn't Steve Perry.
Deen Castronovo has pleaded guilty in a domestic violence case and has been sentenced to probation and counseling. Court records show that Castronovo, 58, of Salem pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault, two counts of domestic violence menacing, one count of unlawful use of a weapon and one count of coercion.
Castronovo has been sentenced to four years of supervised probation with a requirement that he undergo counseling for drug abuse and for domestic violence offenders. If Castronovo breaks his probation, he faces a sentence of more than five years in prison. He is a criminal, not a victim. He is not a nice person, but he is an ok drummer. LMFAO.
I can think of 1000 ways Stevie would have taken this song to be a great song by putting his trademarks all over it -- the perfection of making sure each line was delivered the best it could be. He was a master -- it's why the new Journey songs can't get off the ground. It doesn't matter if their a good song. They won't be great without the love and care Perry gave every line in every song. Love you and miss you Stevie Ray. Your voice will live in my heart forever!!!
🤢
Oh my Steve A..i have hesitate to buy any Journey album..but the first one i ever pick up is Arrival and i am floored..not only is the vocals good but the excitement i got from the whole album takes me really to a Higher Place. And yes Steve Augeri does comes across as a nice guy which is quite rare from anyone in such a big rock band.🤗
i thought i could never listen to journey without steve, but after listening to this song, both the vocals, and the musical arrangement.i have changed my mind, and maybe became a little more open minded.my hat is off to the men of journey.
Great band whoever is singing
Steve Augeri
