This is interesting. I said this in another video but here's my theory on why the graphics got downgraded: -Frontiers was originally made for Next Gen hardware in mind. That being the PS5, Series X and PC. We know from 4chan leaks Frontiers has been in development since at least 2018; -Covid happened and delayed development for a bunch of games in the industry; -Sonic movie comes out in feb 2020 and it was a unexpected success, which makes Sega rethink the release of Frontiers; -Sega demands the game to be releaed on Switch and previous gen consoles. Sonic Team doesn't have the staff and funds to make a unique version for weaker consoles. They just port and downscale graphics to keep the same art style and features on all versions; -Sega demands Frontiers to be released alongside Movie 2. Game needs more polishing. Iizuka asks for 1 more year. Sega grants but no more funds area allocated; -Colors Ultimate with Movie Sonic stuff is released as a stop gap to have something 3D Sonic for when the second movie hits the screens.
Good theory. I'll add a bit more info to this: * We know from those early 4Chan "Sonic Rangers" leaks that most of the first year of development of Frontiers was spent doing market research and pitching game concepts to Sega's higher ups. We know at least 5 Sonic games were pitched by Sonic Team, one of them was aproved and became Sonic Frontiers; * I wouldn't be surprised if the initial idea was to release the game alongside the first Sonic movie. We have to remember the movie was supposed to premiere late 2019, but the ugly design fiasco halted all Paramount's plans and to delayed the movie to Feb 2020, right after the Theaters opened again after the COVID outbreak. * We don't know when Iizuka asked for 1 more year of development, but I believe the whole movie controversy gave Sonic Team more time to polish the game. Even so, the huge success of the movie might have been a surprise to Sega. The movie was a HUGE deal, and that might have been what gave Iizuka some bargain power to convice the suits that Frontiers needed to be the best it could be in order to not kill the momentum created by the movie; * I believe a Switch port was inevitable, given how popular Sonic historically has been on all Nintendo consoles. Kishimoto even said the game was designed from the ground up for the Switch and that can be seen on the PC port, where the Minimum specs target 720p 30 FPS, just like the Switch. * I think the game would have been released as it was, all content, but in a buggy state. Sega probably saw the movie as a cash grab and wanted another cheap game kids could play at the same time. The ugly movie Sonic design was very important because it wasn't just the Sonic fans trash talking, it was EVERYONE trashing the original design! Paramount was expecting fans to hate the design, they didn't expected all movie goers and journalists to hate it as well. This controversy was important because it showed to Sega that people DO care about Sonic and wouldn't sit and consume any disposable garbage they try to sell us.
I just want to say a few things. The Sonic exclusive to true next gen console thing died with 06. Nintendo has been Sonic's main source of revenue since the Gamecube days, with 06 having simply been unforeseeably too ambitious to bring to Wii. All the 2010 multiplat games have reinforced Sonic's stronger relationship with Nintendo. So a Nintendo version of SFr was going to be a priority either way. As for the Sonic movie. Llzuka already confirmed Sonic Colors Ultimate and Sonic Origins were specifically made for/from the movies success (not SFr). SFr was just the next typical mainline Sonic game after the last one (Forces), but he did also happen to say it was originally intended as an anniversary title but couldn't happen due to COVID (though it seems they still would have needed the delay regardless).
These concept arts brought to life would have made the islands SOOOO much cooler and would give them more personality. Though they didn't have many team members. It also looks like the animations in the beta seamed to flow together much nicer. Don't know why that was cut. I also agree with you saying that that camera angle in the boss fight was more cinematic. That jumping attack also would have been a cool addition.
Yeah. Its so surreal just seeing what could have been. Maybe down the line I’m hoping someone mods some of the old assets into the game. And the gigsnto jump is technically in the game if you push him towards the edge of the arena. He jumps back but all of the effects are missing.
A lot of this stuff better come to Frontiers 2 because I love all the concepts like chaos island being a factory for the titans, because if they kept that in, we could see what some of the titans looked like while being constructed.
I just watched your other 2 Frontiers videos (the missed opportunities and the sequel), and I gotta say I'm in love with your content, you're truly underrated

I know I’m super late to this video but it’s actually very well made, and covers a lot of good ground regarding the concept of sonic frontiers! I share a lot of the intrigue that you have towards a game like this.
I'm probably not the only one that noticed this, but it seems like sonic used different designs in the concept art, like some showed him with his '06 design, and in the first cyberspace concept art that's shown, he looks like he does in generations.
Maybe one day we will get the concept art from the book will be modified into the game or possibly in the far future sonic team would remake the game and use more of the concept art from the book maybe. By the way, great video, I like her observation on everything from the concept, art book, and it made me think if this was the beta what other move sets were cut from the boss fights? SEGA has a lot of problems. A lot of their good games aren’t even first party. Altus, the guys who make persona are second party so their not in full control of sega. A lot of first party sega games like jet set radio and space channel 5 or nights haven’t had a game in years. Sonic is one of the only few still around cause he makes a crap ton of money.
@@shaulov10 They had five years, so I doubt it was time. I think it might have been due to the limitations of the Switch, and wanting the game to run on the Switch well enough. But that's just my thoughts.
Hey update about the cut content in the art book, ( 9:49 ) I think that the eagle and wolf was supposed to be a normal enemy you fight like the soldier enemys u fight and there's stuff that sport this idea, there unused animations for the wolf and well there's concept art for different versions of the eagle.
3:11 Those are the same dodging animations found in the final game. Different animations play depending on Sonic's direction, so if he was facing to the right and you pressed LB/L1, this backflip animation plays. If you don't believe me, you can try it yourself with little effort. On another note, Sonic is seen dodging towards the camera in the footage, which however is not possible due to how the dodging mechanic works. There's a good chance the mechanic worked differently. Maybe Left stick + Bumper button? I guess we won't know anyhow soon.
So the concept art 7:06 is actually super interesting. Volcanoes can have some sort of hot spring around them, and in some cases it makes the water look crazy colors, like green. I'd look up the Yellowstone Geyser Basin for some examples. The water looks green, but it's because the only thing that can survive in it is algae. Odds are it would've just caused damage because that water is boiling hot. It's a shame there were no geysers or hot springs in the final game.
That beta caterpillar guardian fight looks more intense and fun than the one we got in the finished version of the game alongside that different but cooler super sonic transformation
Honestly, I don't dislike the final product I know this video came out as soon as the first update came out, but now with the 3 updates and watching this video again, I feel that for example the concept art of the beta structures of Kronos and Ouranos Island may appear in the next game as well as in update 3, which caterpillar and spider got their attacks and beta animations If you put together the beta versions of the world design for Kronos Island next to the beta structures, the pyramids of ourans can practically create a new lore about the ancient architecture and be found in a region beyond the Star Fall Islands (Cof, Cof Angel Island)
My guess on why the Caterpillar was changed is that you had to hit a ball back at him but hitting a moving ball while you are moving was probably a nightmare. Easier to hit balls back when you're on rails I suppose.
@@shaulov10 I agree but I think it was because he was a harder enemy originally was why he was placed in just the final island. Not that I am complaining about that choice cos' he would be a pain to avoid around other islands in his annoying form currently. At least in the beta version of the fight you can clearly run away from him with no consequence much like most fights.
Lmao I remember being hyped for update 3 because we expected some of those stuff would be in the game, we only got the spider+ model and the caterpillar fight
One thing you should know about concept art is they express ideas for the game and is not always going reflect the actual product there not scraped ideas or anything like that.
The concept arts do not define an already established product, but the beta leak leaves a lot to be desired with respect to the final product although I do not complain about the final result since it could have been worse...

What I can only guess from why there were quite a lot of setbacks was to compensate for the switch's performance? Which is indeed pretty sad if you think about it but it does make some sense
Yeah they had to downscale for the switch but in general it’s normal for games to look nicer in beta builds cause optimization Hasn’t started yet. This is common on game development so the switch isn’t entirely at fault.
launch frontiers was legitimately an alpha version of a game we'll never get, the environments all look like placeholders, the cutscenes look like animatics most of the time, environment design feels like it didn't account for the platforming paths, and the objectives were mostly basic
I know I'm late to this but Sega did say they're FINALLY going to give Sonic Team more time and resources for games after the disaster that was Sonic forces and the success that was Sonic Frontiers
What people don't understand is that, it's almost impossible to make a game look 1:1 to the concept art, I don't think there ever has been a game that does this, the concept art it's literally just that, of course will look better, it doesn't have boundaries, it's just to offer the idea to what you're making and refine it later An example is how the first concept art (the one of Kronos) looks too busy, like a poorly photoshopped image (unlike the other concept arts of the rest of the islands) so yeah, it's a mix of how Sonic team is small and that concept arts are just ideas thrown to make something, like, a lot of these aren't even "scrapped" those were just made as a reference for the structures they wanted to make Also that green part are literally sulfuric acid lake-things i doubt the ancients had a reason to be near them
Yeah it’s true that games never look like their concept 100% but with froniters. A lot of things don’t look like what they even originally planned. Especially chaos. The theme and vibe feels completely different from the concept.
@@shaulov10 i hardly disagree with that except with Chaos Island but for what we know (and I'd say even shows on cutscenes) Chaos Island was where the time, budget and man power began to be lacking, hopefully there can be a rehash of the island as much as possible in future updates, maybe not to how it looked on the concept arts but at least to give it more life than just being a 2D island
The Nintendo Switch really held back this game I could see this game on PS4/Xbox One but damn I played the demo for the switch version and I was baffled with how bad the game looked so I had to buy it next Gen
I mean the 2nd movie was more then likely a helping hand to Frontiers development, the sales of Origins are probably what determined an undercooked product to a perfected masterpiece.

Maaan, I wish a lot of this made it into Frontiers. One of my biggest problems with that game is how basic the world looks, there's barely any flare to it it at least not as much as I would have liked.
Bro thsi whole thing reminds me of super mario galaxy' situation don't get me wrong it's a great game but it was rushed because the developers didn't exactly had enough to put all of their ideas in the game so it caused the game to have some unused content but 2010 it got a sequel and developer most put all of their ideas they had for the first one fill it in the sequel at first it was meant ro be a dlc for mario galaxy but then they decided to make a whole new game out of it now that's the same case for frontiers sonic team didn't have enough time to pu all of their ideas and concepts they had for this game and now ij tye upcoming sequel they probably gonna fill those unused concepts and ideas for the sequel
I think the reason the graphics and certain bosses and objects was most likely due to consoles not being able to handle it, as this would fry most PC's
I think it's dumb the final game's graphics got nerfed simply cuz the game HAD to be made on Switch... Frontiers would have looked SOOOO much better if they used the graphics and particle effects of Beta Build... FUCK THE NINTENDO SWITCH... this game was NEVER meant for it...
@@SonicRasengan best thing that came out of it was that it helped Sonic Frontiers sell more which led to Sonic Team getting a bigger budget and more manpower and those who don't have pc, Xbox or playstation can still play the game

Not that I am complaining about that choice cos' he would be a pain to avoid around other islands in his annoying form currently.
At least in the beta version of the fight you can clearly run away from him with no consequence much like most fights.
Yeah. It was annoying if you got to close he would just suck you up *pause*
Lmao I remember being hyped for update 3 because we expected some of those stuff would be in the game, we only got the spider+ model and the caterpillar fight
Kronos looks epic in the concept art
One thing you should know about concept art is they express ideas for the game and is not always going reflect the actual product there not scraped ideas or anything like that.
The concept arts do not define an already established product, but the beta leak leaves a lot to be desired with respect to the final product although I do not complain about the final result since it could have been worse...
I hope this is the last game where sonic team is rushed to make a game
@@shaulov10 I do not think that time has been a matter of time but rather the discussions that have been generated internally by not knowing if the product would work or not
That’s also a factor but they were still rushed. This game was originally going to release back in 2021 and izuka had to fight to get it delayed
@@shaulov10 same
@@shaulov10Unlikely, There's not a single unrushed sonic game and lots of them succeeded in spite of being rushed
Sega sees they succeed multiples times after rushing and rush ST again
Sonic Frontiers Ultimate edition where it's beta finalized pls. (Idk how game development works.)
gonna need that Frontiers DX
We all know what happens with DX Ports
I know I'm late to this but Sega did say they're FINALLY going to give Sonic Team more time and resources for games after the disaster that was Sonic forces and the success that was Sonic Frontiers
What people don't understand is that, it's almost impossible to make a game look 1:1 to the concept art, I don't think there ever has been a game that does this, the concept art it's literally just that, of course will look better, it doesn't have boundaries, it's just to offer the idea to what you're making and refine it later
An example is how the first concept art (the one of Kronos) looks too busy, like a poorly photoshopped image (unlike the other concept arts of the rest of the islands) so yeah, it's a mix of how Sonic team is small and that concept arts are just ideas thrown to make something, like, a lot of these aren't even "scrapped" those were just made as a reference for the structures they wanted to make
Also that green part are literally sulfuric acid lake-things i doubt the ancients had a reason to be near them
Yeah it’s true that games never look like their concept 100% but with froniters.
Yeah. Chaos was definitely a weaker island. Even the terrain itself feels like it’s fighting against sonic

I’ve heard about phantasy star. Maybe I should play it one day
This whole game felt like they were trying to combine Fantasy Star Online single player with Sonic, which sounded like a neat idea
I mean the 2nd movie was more then likely a helping hand to Frontiers development, the sales of Origins are probably what determined an undercooked product to a perfected masterpiece.

11:05 fin.
can do that with sonic generations could have looked like
Maaan, I wish a lot of this made it into Frontiers.
I don’t think so. If the PS4 is able to run red dead redemption 2 then it should be able to run sonic frontiers
I think RDR2 used a few dev tricks not to fry it and certain things are more limited with it as well
Regardless. In my opinion it’s the greatest looking game of all time and it’s impressive that they got it running on ps4
Yeah
I think it's dumb the final game's graphics got nerfed simply cuz the game HAD to be made on Switch... Frontiers would have looked SOOOO much better if they used the graphics and particle effects of Beta Build... FUCK THE NINTENDO SWITCH... this game was NEVER meant for it...
Got nerfed hard cause of the switch
@@shaulov10 sad but true...
@@SonicRasengan best thing that came out of it was that it helped Sonic Frontiers sell more which led to Sonic Team getting a bigger budget and more manpower and those who don't have pc, Xbox or playstation can still play the game
Yeah. Overall no matter what you think on the game. You can’t deny it’s commercial success. That was probably the best thing that could happen for sonic team
The beta and concept art are cool and all, but let's just appreciate what they gave us. This game is a masterpiece, along with the three updates, we're in for a treat!
Oh believe me. This game is one of my favorites in the series. This game is nothing short of a miracle. I’m fully hyped for the next two updates
I like Frontiers, but I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece. There’s a number of things holding it back even with the DLC.
That’s true. I never said it was a masterpiece. But I feel like it’s still a really good game despite the flaws. And hopefully the updates will only improve the game
@@shaulov10 my previous comment was for Silver.
That said, yes the game is good. And the updates might improve it bit.
But after a while the open space of the world gets boring after a while.
Fair enough.

They already delayed the game a full year. It was supposed to release in 2021. So it would have been unlikely for it to be delayed again
@@shaulov10 Mhh, true .. but it still would've been worth it tho :D. Dont get me wrong, i am not whining. I loved sonic frontiers, even though i had to play it on switch.

The game had way better Lighting and Animations. Retail Version looks like a PS3 game lmao.
Nah the game is literally the best looking sonic game.
@@shaulov10 Other than Resolution and FrameRate, Unleashed still looks better. Creative and Visually distinct Areas that perfectly blend into the Level design, detailed animations that flow into each other. Frontiers looks fine from afar but when you look closer you notice the Low resolution Textures, Models lacking in detail, broken and ugly animations that snap into each other giving off a Cheap and unfinished look. Not to mention all the visual bugs and weird looking reflections.
@@Terminal_Apotos i think SA2 and Even hero’s. Despite what I think about it, have a better art direction and look than unleashed. Yeah unleashed is cool but I feel like a lot of the colors feel washed out besides in the tropical jungle. Especially Holoska. Literally my least favorite looking and playing stage in that game.
I remember first looking at the concept art and immediately thinking that it looked way better compared to the final product where it looked more like an amateur fan game.
I feel like the final games still looks good. For example ares seems to be one of the islands that have been fully realized. It’s just that the team didn’t have the resources to realize their true vision
@@shaulov10 That’s the problem with games like Forces and Frontiers, they have great ideas, but they’re too ambitious for a small team of developers with a small budget to handle. You can’t fully realize the potential of a game when you only have popsicle sticks and duct tape to work with.
@@SquidwardSmellsGOOD734 true. Hopefully with the increase in budget and resources with the next game. Sonic team can do what they want
