Excellent tips... Also when stopped behind a vehicle at a traffic light or simply in stop-and-go traffic, make sure your headlight is shining in the OUTSIDE rear view mirror of the drivers side of the vehicle in front of you.... if for some reason they decide to back up you won't be in their blind spot...

Great pointers! Thanks! I'd rather be a little late in this world than early to the next! Safe riding!

Just one comment on what James said.
He mentioned riding in staggered formation. and not follow my leader. First on narrow winding roads being staggered means that one is not taking up the optimum SAFE position for vision around the bend. One is also on the wrong side of the carriageway for some ie. not over to the right on a left hand turn or not over on the left on right turns. In these circumstances is it best to be in single file and to ride your own ride. The safest position to be in is a good FOLLOWING ON DISTANCE. This is important as it is the distance that you can see to be clear and in which you can guarantee stopping in. Anything closer than that is extremely dangerous.
As regards the staggered position this should again be far enough behind the next rider in order to stop . Always be in THE FOLLOWING ON POSITION. Should the biker in front and staggered left or right of you fall from his machine you couild becpome iunvolved. A friend of mine had it happen twice to him. Two seperate incidents. He was in the FOLLOWING ON position and in formation, staggered and therefore closeto the rear but offside of the machine in front. When the riders went down for no apparent reason, maybe spillage of diesel or lose aggregate both the bikes and the riders separated and filed the carriageway in front of him whilst sliding down the road. Because he was the correct distance for braking he avoided becoming another casualty. So even in staggered formation one has to remember to be the FOLLOWING ON DISTANCE behind
Its the only SAFE DISTANCE TO BE. When riding in convoy one should also remember not to try and keep up with the rider in front. That is if it is difficult to do so or one tries to keep up on bends and feel uncomfortable with his speed. Slow down. If you try to follow him round bends and he comes off or hits something round that bend then you may be next in the list to follow his mistake. DO NOT DO THAT. One should ride ones own ride and if he is going away from you don't try to keep up if it means riding outside your own comfort zone. Just let him go.
PS. whilst following on its easy to follow my leader and that means visual fixation on the bike in front by doing this one can lose many other visual signs that one should looking for, so always look and ride for yourself not for the benefit of others. and not on the rear of the vehicle in front.
IF you give SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE one should always be able to slow and stop should anything untoward happen to the traffic that you are following. there should be little need for any escape route as giving DISTANCE is going to help you keep safe. What you will have to do is look closer to you at or for any other potential hazards and ride accordingly. If you are to close to the vehicles in front you will not see what might be happening further down the road and come a cropper due to that to close a proximity. Hang back and give the SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE every time when out and about.

Watch yourself all the time while riding, because no one else will! I have been riding bikes all my life, so almost 40 years of riding experience. Funny story... I was living out in Seattle and used to love to ride my bike with earphones in because I LOVE my music. I was pretty careful even with them in, but one day it wasn't enough. I was in heavy traffic on the good old 405 and was enjoying my music in the slow traffic. I start to notice that all the cars in front of me were starting to turn out of my lane into the crazy stupid right lane to get off... or so I thought. I start moving up and again, notice that everyone is moving over... except me. Because there was so much traffic, I didn't think it was all that important what was going on behind me, so I wasn't really paying attention. Then it hit me... look behind you...dumbass. Well, there was a Sherriff behind me with his lights and horns blaring. I got off to the middle to let him pass, but he chose to stop with me. As I took my helmit off, he yells through his window are you fu^king deaf? No sir, just had my earphones on... really? well congratulations on your infraction, I will see that you get it in the mail. I don't have time to stop because another idiot motorcyclist probably killed himself doing something just like you are doing now. Take them off, and get off my highway. Lesson learned!!! Do not let anything dull your senses while riding, it could cost you your life!

I am a new rider. I am from the US, retired in the Philippines. It can be argued here in PH that dogs on the road are the #1 cause of motorcycle crashes, injuries and death. Of course it is best to avoid. But what if you are going to hit the dog? I believe that locking up brakes and or sudden swerve is the worse thing to do. I believe that Holding on tight and taking the dog dead center is best. I rehearse this over and over in my mind. I repeat to myself, if in this last instant situation, hold on and say to myself: “Speed bump.” Hit the dog the same as if I suddenly came up on a speed bump too fast. Hold on and take the bounce and remain in control. The goal is to avoid going down in a crash. I am interested in what you would do if you are in a situation where you are going to hit a dog. What do you do in that final instant? Thank you.

Always wear proper equipment for a crash. Leathers, boots, good helmet, and gloves. Nice tips.
