No Will you didn’t really miss the turn into Selby lock. Going past and turning is the best way to do it. I’m surprised the lock keeper at Naburn didn’t advise you to do that. Had you been aware in advance it would have helped you greatly. Trying to simply turn straight into the lock is impossible in a narrow boat unless you’ve done it dozens of times before, and I certainly wouldn’t try it. Turning and coming back against the flow slows the event down, giving you time to get the manoeuvre done. In the end you achieved that entry perfectly. Don’t think you touched the wing wall at all. Not many first timers can pull that off. Congratulations 👍. You’ll enjoy the Derwent, and the Pocklington. Beautiful isolation on the “Pocky” . But no shopping!
It's hard to see the entrance to that lock I turned thinking to go in but I thought I'd better turn into the flow so I had to go across the river then turn. I was so relieved getting into that lock. I get used to it later on and get in perfect. Not a nice stretch of water that. Thankyou for your support. Have a great evening.
Cccrikey, you had us all on edge, the missus had her flutter board and flippers ready, just in case. I cold see Wills Way was doing exactly what you didn't want, taking you sideways with the flow, you down the bowels of the boat moving things, and It all came right and you cruised into the lock brilliantly. Needed an urgent pump out and water refill. Thank Will for an excellent vlog, take care.
Yeah it looks good on camera but I was turning in then the lock keeper shouted "turn around" so I had to go out again. It's just a shit river to do it on. My poor engine took a thrashing. It's making a funny noise now at full chat. Anyway I got in and that's the end of that chapter. Cheers Phillip.
Bloody hell Will that river was mental you did well getting her bk round to face the lock to go in it see what ya mean if you brake down on fell in that wud that I think take care Will cheers dude 🙂🔧⛳️✌️
Yeah that's the biggest worry. Getting a log in my prop or getting something wrapped around it. Nothing you can do then it's drift until it lands somewhere. Can't go on a bank because the waters going up and down all the time. No it's not a nice journey Lee. Glad I got in the lock. Cheers 💪
Well done Will, it did you a favour over shooting the Lock, I always find when conditions are like that on a river it’s easier going against the flow to get into the lock. Slows you down when entering and turning into the lock. Works for me. 👍🏼
Later on I turn early then just drift down and turn while drifting. That was my first time and i messed it up abit on top of crapping myself in those condition. Do I survive, will I make it next time? You'll have to wait Nick..Ha
Enjoyed your video of the River Ouse trip I am from Selby and agree that river is not for the faint hearted. It's good you shared your experience anyone thinking of going onto the Ouse in a narrow boat would learn alot from watching your video. All the best hope you enjoyed Selby.
I loved Selby full of colourful characters and that amazing Abbey and just down the canal is gorgeous countryside. That river Ouse is something else. Stay tuned because I go back. Thankyou James for watching.
@@NarrowboatWill take care, this one was a bit to next level i think. Tidel rivers can be rippers. Ha ha, enjoy the summer Will, and stay navigated nauticly. Safety frist.

It's hard to see but the lock keeper is shouting "turn around" so I had to go out again and then turn. Looks good on camera abit like a swan on top but paddling like hell underneath. Ha ha Thankyou
That was definitely a squeaky bum moment. Had the same a few years ago turning into west Stockwith lock on the Trent. The lock keepers had said what to do but I went the wrong way round ended up sideways only time I have ever used full throttle. In the end your entry to the lock was textbook well done
Yeah there's no training or proper advice about doing these lock. I worry more about getting logs in my prop or breaking down. I had to thrash my engine going against the flow getting in to Selby. Not a nice experience especially when I've been doing gentle canals for so long. Ha Cheers for watching.
Will will will Canal boats give you a clue not rivers ! Pump out yuk we closed off our one on our second boat and went the cassette route. Glad you survived to scary for us life jackets don't compensate for stress of fast flowing rivers as you say rubbish around prop snaps coupling engine cuts out you scramble to the bow to drop anchor in the mean time you slam into a bridge and hole the hull not nice Thanks for your risk appreciate your time and efforts to film the scary cruising Take care Will Keep safe warm dry and virus free.
Ha ha yeah not really designed for rivers. I know why you went the cassette route. I can't get rid of the slight smell from the tank and pipes. Even after changing everything. So annoyed with it. It's a shame because it works so well and lasts 2 months. I do the Selby entry much better next time. I couldn't see the entrance till it was to late. Thanks for watching and your great comments. Take care.
What a scary experience, Will, but you put it right superbly well. The flow on that river was unbelievable!😱😱 I hope you were ok as you left us on a cliff hanger as the tide was carrying you away?🌊🌊 Great footage! 🌻🦋
It looked ok on camera but I was all over the place at the back, crapping myself. It's not just the flow or the wind it's all the trees and rubbish in there as well. I do a much better job later Mrs Mindful. Thankyou. Have a peaceful day.
I don’t know about squeaky bum time l think l’d have soiled my armour !That was a textbook entry into the lock .Scenes like that always reminds me of trying to get into Gloucester lock with the water thundering over the weir before the barriers were installed 😱
I've done that trip down to Bristol. That's a fast and big river. It's breaking down that makes me nervous or getting a log jammed in my prop. I know I had a log jammed somewhere else already. Thanks Tony.
I'm a swift water rescue tech and have done rescues on this stretch of river, it is absolutely terrifying and it's even more terrifying if you are a srt dog handler like me because I often a NO safety line unlike other srt's, the ouse at Selby is just terrifying!
you made a fantastic job of getting in the lock Will , i made the same trip today it was bloody horrible, i really think they need to be advising people of the dangers of that trip , i will not be doing it again that's for sure, you done very well , great vlog .👍
Hello Kev and cake making Julie. Mmm that was nice with ice cream. I put some berries on and....Wait a minute what was I talking about. Oh yeah the cake..no.. I mean the river Ouse is bloody dangerous..Not a nice journey that. Cheers you two.
I don't want to seem too clever, but on a racing ebbtide like that, I would have thought your lock approach to be the only way. Had I been gongoozling (as some were, you didn't comment on it) on the bank, I would have thought "sensible chap" seeing your manoeuvre downstream. You can't do anything about the wind, but approaching the lock entrance from downstream meant that you could use the current to push the bow round into the lock opening (exactly as you did). The other thing that occurred to me (someone switched my brain on this morning, can't help it) is that you can't "freewheel" on the current, because the rudder only works in conjunction with the prop. So if you turn the engine off and just drift, you're at the utter mercy of the river.
You are absolutely correct but I didn't know all this at the time. I started to turn straight into the lock but the lock keeper shouted turn around. So I had to go out again then turn. It felt really stressful but looked good on camera. I do drift later on and it work really well. Stay tuned. Thankyou for the great comment.
Well done Will, I remember entering Selby lock myself very exciting, we turned boat around just after railway bridge and approached lock going backwards which made entering into lock a little easier, turning the boat was the scariest we were being pushed sideways and ended up putting bow into the trees before the stern would come around, that really pushed heart rate up,enjoying your adventures, stay safe 👍
I couldn't see the turn into Selby. I wasn't really sure what to do. I was about to put my nose into the lock but the locky was shouting turn around. So I had to go out again and turn. I crapped myself to be honest. If my boat breaks down on that stretch it's goodbye boat. So dangerous. So what did I do go out again a day later. Ha ha cheers Alan..
