It was so nice to see Rick trying to catch the Thaalam (Rhythm) and getting confused. The first set (opening video) is performed in Adi Thalam, a 8 beat cycle, which is the most common thaalam you see in classical music. Second set is performed in Mishra Chaapu, a 7 beat cycle. But practically most performers use it as a 3.5 beat cycle making it a very preferred Thaalam for precurssion performance. It usually comes in folk songs in and Outside India. Third is a 9.5 beat cycle.
Mishra chapu thalam corresponds to rupak or tewra taal in Hindustani, structured 3-2-2. Rupak is used often in Hindustani classical music and also in folk and popular music. Examples from Hindi films: “Piya to se naina lage re”, “Teri bindiyaan re”, “Megha chhaye adhi rat”. As others have noted, the last piece was set 9.5 beats, not 9. It is structured thus: 4 | 2 | 2 | 1-½. In Hindustani this is probably called Sunanda. It may also go by other names.
@@amitavabanerjea1 Thank You for the info. There is Roopaka thaalam in Carnatic also. But someone had told that there is slight differences between Roopaka and Mishra Chaapu. Since Roopaka Thaalm is part of the 35 Thaalam system, while the 3.5 Mishra chaapu is not.

I was lucky to attend a percussion concert in NYC in 1997 featuring VV and ZH along with a Latin drummer whose name I don’t recall. What a mesmerizing experience!
What Rick shows at 13:40 playing two sets of rythms in either hand, is a technique used in Avadhana pallavi in Karnatik music where the user plays two separate rythms in either hands and the lyrics is set accordingly. It is supposed to be a very tough technique and Rick does it easily! Kudos to you!!
Sometimes Ghatams are tuned with extra clay inside, or by using a wet cloth to wipe it a certain way.. Sometimes even by dipping parts of Ghatam in water for a while.. 🙂
Except for the last piece where he missed the ½ beat. During the mishra chapu piece he was initially confused but then picked up the 7-beat structure by imitating one of the artists on the stage. 😀
Vikku vinayakram is legend in Ghadam which is very famous in south india, particularly tamilnadu Once he went to America for concert. Unfortunately his ghadam seems broken.God never let him down. Few years earlier he presented one ghadam to american. That guy gave the ghadam for concert! .
I know Vinny Vinaygam Sir personally. I'll Say I'm one of the luckiest person, I had the privilege to sit next to him and see his performance. I can never ever forget that. The pot or Ghadam is heavy I was completely blown away when I saw him throw it up and play it. It was a wow moment
Watching Rick - someone with DECADES of musical experience - struggle with the odd beats makes me so happy as a tabla player. The hardest taals I always had trouble with were the larger prime numbers - 13, 17, and 19 - the latter of which is performed here as 9.5.
My man ghatam is a whole range of instrument which each and every one has a certain tuning so that's why you see him having three but usually it's a whole room full of ghatams which they choose and select for each and every concert that they perform according to their selection of songs and notes every ghatam is tuned to a single scale
