  • In October 2022, not long after the borders reopened, myself and my two younger brothers went to Japan and hiked the ancient Kumano Kodō Pilgrimage. The closest I'll ever feel to being in a Ghibli film... I’m already dreaming of my next time back.

“Like slippers with worn in soles” ❤ A snappy, glitchy but beautifully narrated story about three siblings on a pilgrimage to honour their roots. I shed a tear seeing their mum at the end 😢

Finding videos like this is kind of like finding a treasure. There's something magical about your editing and storytelling - that brought me, from a person who only watched this video to plan their own hike, to someone who was invested and almost felt like a part in your own journey.
    Truly amazing work.

This is a dream of me & my siblings too! ½ Japanese (among other things haha) & we've all wanted to hike & explore Japan more, beyond the cityscape where our family lives (Fukuoka, Osaka & Tokyo).
Oddly enough, being from Hawaiʻi, New Zealand 🇳🇿 is ALSO on our Sibling/family trip list. I've been before (did a 1.5 month roadie solo exploring both isles) & they've all wanted to go back with me when I return (hopefully soon!).

I am pretty sure that making that much noise in a Ryokan in the morning was VERY popular. Right up there with walking with wooden clogs on tatami.
When I lived in Japan I used to love Ryokans. There is nothing like the smell of Nattō in the morning 🤭.
    Very nice video.

Kia ora! Thank you for bring back happy memories of completing the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage with my partner back in 2017 - we absolutely loved our experience. And now we are dual pilgrims having also done the Camino de Santiago several years earlier. Needless to say, hearty congratulations, it was such a treat to reminisce about my kumano experience through your video!

I absolutely loved that. I love how you make it about much more than just the hike, brilliant storytelling and beautifully shot and edited. I hope my three half Japanese kids will someday go back to NZ to tour around together.
If you're ever in Japan again I recommend doing the Omine-Okugake. A 100km hike from Yoshino, Nara through to Hongu-Taisha. I did it last year and it was bloody tough but absolutely amazing. There's one section you would either have to skip or cross dress for because unfortunately, it's still off limits for women. I've heard of Japanese women sneaking through though (good on them).

I found that so moving. What an absolutely beautiful video.
It popped up onto my screen just now and at first I thought you were fellow Australians as I didn’t pick a NZ accent. I was so excited as I haven’t come across many Australian RUclipsrs travelling in Japan, or anywhere really. I follow just a couple.
My knees are aged now and my love of hiking has slowed… a lot. Two of my three love a hike and all love Japan, as after my husband and I lived there in the early 90’s for 2 years, it took until 2014 before we could afford to take them. (Our first big oversees holiday actually being 3 weeks in a motor home in New Zealand 7 years earlier… what wonderful memories we have of that trip). But we have all been back to Japan on separate trips and my love for the nature, culture, people and food there will always remain. Maybe one more trip with just my husband and I for old times sake should be planned.

Dear Elena, Merry Xmas and what a nice video and a special maybe too. As you try to make the best and most beautiful images it are often the most crappy ones we cherish the most. The to us represented ones that help our memory or even have become our memory of those we love. Which in a way, going with those images and memories to Japan what might feel as a trail back. But creating new memories and images at the same time, to hold and cherish now and for those to see long after.
As you said trails alone or shared...but you always carry the images, and even sounds taste and smells along with you where ever you go. So why this video at least to me feels special. Watch your first video. It took you 9 seconds to put your mom in, and your brothers. And so many miles, travels, tastes, smells, and encounters later this video shows, that whatever we photograph we unseeing and unnoticeable also, but always photograph ourselves with it.
    Thanks.
