I have watched all your videos and I think they are great and very encouraging. thank you for your time time and sharing your knowledge. I really appreciate it. God bless you.
+Treena Rami thanks so much.
Surgical Tech Tips Thank you for the video it was very insightful. In your opinion which do you think holds up better when a person is trying to get into this field, a certificate program or diploma program?
I got hired because the lady precepting me loved me so much she got me an in with the director at the hospital I wanted to work at. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH - NETWORK! I was the first in my class to get a job before graduating. And the highest paid too!
Hsiao Wei exactly...because they liked you. I was at a hospital where everyone was mean except for the Doctors.
Shane, I swear you are ALWAYS reading my mind... lol.... Everytime I think about a certain topic, your next video is exactly it. A while ago, I was thinking about gloving... with my current job all we did was open gloving and I got a new ST position offered to me and I said "omg!! I think I forgot how to closed glove".. 2 days later you did gowning and gloving. This morning, I was thinking about this ST position being my first real ST job. All the tips you gave was so helpful!!!! Thank you so much!!! Your a ST savior Shane lol
HAHA, that's awesome.
Thank you for these videos. Im currently in the decision making process of "To do or not To do". Im scared to death of spending all this money and time and not being employed. I find you incredibly encouraging.
Making an impact is absolutely true when I was a student at my last rotation the Assistant OR director allowed me to apply for a job as a student and I was offered a position before I even graduated. I started working a month after graduating so making a good impression is huge!!
Hey when making a impact how did you do it like in what things did you do that caused an impact?
I don't know if was mentioned but another big help is being a great student and worker while in your classes and asking for recommendations and support from your instructors. Typically, they are more than happy to assist and push you forward as an entry-level ST
A+ Superb advice.
Well said... I really enjoy your videos and the knowledge you bring to the table. Watching your videos helps me with my decision in wanting to become a surg tech a whole easier. Personally, I'm starting my scrub tech program on 3/26. I couldn't be more excited to start this new journey and the excitment that comes with it. Pls continue to share your knowledge with us. Thank you!
quick question: Ill be 63 when I graduate, Im in pretty good shape, i can stand on my feet, for 8+ hours, just curious because I can do MA work or phlebotomy wondering if i should pick surgical tech, any thoughts on the age perspective?
I really wanted to do good in clinicals. I really tried but it was kinda toxic. Techs and nurses with bad attitudes and techs that make you stand there and don't teach. Now I can't find a job. I scored really high on my CST but I guess that means nothing.
I couldn't agree with you more! I live in south west Florida and I am a recent ST grad and I definitely put effort into making an impact from day 1 at both my externship sites. I was offered a job at both sites but due to the time of the year you mentioned they have no openings at the moment. It's a little discouraging but this gives me time to really prepare for my CST exam I will be taking this Thursday (April 13). Just found your channel today but I love the content! Really good advice, thanks.
Great to hear and good luck on the exam! Its a doosie.
I got REALLY lucky. I took the boards in Dec of 2016, past the first time, I applied at a huge county hospital a level 1 trauma hospital, 4 months later & got hired:) Unfortunately during the 6 week training period I did not make it, it didn’t work out because there were a lot of mean people there yelling at me all the time. It was my first paid job as a ST & was let go:( I didn’t want to go. I worked so hard to get where I was at. This was in 2016 & I’ve been looking ever since. I even renewed the boards recently. I personally think it was the people working there. No one was nice or patient. NO ONE is perfect. I’m not giving up...I’m STILL applying & I learned from my mistakes there. And I will tell you that I will NEVER do them again. What advice do you have for me because I’m thinking about giving up but at the same time I don’t want too.
You haven't gotten a surgical tech job in four years??
@@coffeepandacat nope. Last year I had seven interviews and nothing
@@anamarijamilos1290 omg where are u from?

Hi Shane I was wondering did you ever have a hard time finding a job when you first finished school? How did you find your first job etc.
Thank you VERY VERY MUCH for all your advice. I have watched most of your videos and absolutely love them all. Blessings
Question? Do they do like background checks or basically what I'm getting at of you got convicted of something like a DUI would that be held against you trying to get into this type of field?
I really want to be able to join a St. Jude's hospital. It's been a dream of mine since I was very young. 💙
Hello my name is Frances Cortes I am currently in a stress position lol. I am an operating room technician. I graduated in Puerto Rico. I have three years of experience in a hospital. It turns out that no University or College is accredited to take the certification examination. The only option I have is to go back to studying from scratch. I feel so distressed. I feel that all my sacrifices were for nothing. Is it possible to work without this certification?
+Paulett Cubano it is possible to work without your certification. Your options are limited, but it is possible.
You are so inspiring!! I’m currently a CNA and I work in the hospital here in Las Vegas and I’ve been thinking of surgical Tech or doing phlebotomy because combining the CNA with the phlebotomy I’m able to become an ER Tech witch would be such a stepping stone in my career but I’ve always wanted to do surgical tech. Right now I work on the ortho unit and I love it. What would your advice be for someone like myself?
Thank you so much for all this information you awesome
do you recommend starting school next month (october) and finishing in january 2020 or wait until february 2019 and finishing in may 2020? i’m asking this because of your second tip that there are less jobs in the beginning of the year. i want to start the program soon but i’m not sure if it’ll be more risky in getting a job when i could just wait about four more months in starting the program. please let me know what your advice would be.
you re really humble person and I have came across your recently youtube channel while i was searching my future. Thank you for the good advice.
Thanks for your positivity! I'm from Southern California and competition is rough here! I graduated from my Surgical Tech school in 2013 (I was just 19) but long story short, I never got to get Certified as an ST. And thus never worked in the field. I've just felt discouraged who will hire me? I don't have experience or the certificate. So a few years went by and I've felt so discouraged, then recently I finally decided to go back to my school and try one more time, but I knew if I would take the exam right now, I would eventually fail. Because after years of not going back. So long story short now I am enrolled in Central Service program. And hoping that will help me to get my foot in the door as a Surgical Tech. So that was my struggle. Sorry if it was kind of long, but you look like a very helpful person 😊
Ashley Caroline That is so great to hear Ashley that you are not giving up. You definitely have your foot in the door starting out in spd, if your true passion is to get up to the OR, never lose sight of that and make it known to the OR charge nurses/ director that you are willing to learn and help out in the OR whenever possible!
Wow that is really good advise thank you! I will keep that in mind. Although it might take me a while to get up there maybe, but I will keep that always in my mind! Spd is perfect to start off with
Ashley Caroline most people never make it out of SPD. Apply at all county hospitals.. I’m in LA, so I understand your frustration.
Why don’t people make it out of SPD? The OR is much more stressful than SPD, and OR techs do make more, but not drastically more.
In addition, sterile processing is obviously super important, and some people just find their passion down there. SPD is actually very demanding; they deserve way more credit than they actually get.
My advice. Don’t give up. I am 7 years out and had the same mindset. “Who will want me with such a wide gap?” I decided to just apply again and landed an SPD position. 6 months after I applied everywhere even the hospital I’m at for scrub tech. I have an interview soon for scrub tech.
Very encouraging words.
What job would you recommend for someone who is still in school but hasn’t reached the semester of their externship phase?
I simply LOVE this guy!!! Just subscribed!!:)
How were you able to get 👆 there in 1 Month? That's really fast
I love your videos! I'm going to start school this fall for Surgical Tech and your videos have already helped me! I wanted to start studying and getting ready, so do you have any tips? Your favorite books, study tips, etc.
Start studying Medical Terminology. Learn all the prefixes, suffixes, combining words, etc. you'll be amazed how much smoother and easier class becomes!
Josie Cisneros Matthew is right, knowing medical terminology is a good base to start with. It will help you a ton throughout the school year, and your entire career.
Matthew Rully thank you!
Surgical Tech Tips okay, thanks so much!
Hey that was great...
what tips do you have for students who are going to intership soon.. what do preceptors look for in students??
what should we do and don't doo??
please make a video soon I'm going to intership at the end of this month..
I will make a quick video this weekend about this, but most importantly. Never say I KNOW. As a preceptor it's one of the most annoying things a student can say. Be a sponge, learn good techniques from many different techs, and setup the way your preceptor wants you to set up, you will have plenty of time to refine what works for you when you are on your own.
Thank you.
Surgical Tech Tips "Never say I know" is great advice.
Hi, I've been reading CST forums where there are a lot of complaints about the way surgeons and nurses treat the techs -- to the point of calling the OR a "hostile" environment. What has been your experience?
I have heard of some horrible experiences in the OR. I had some not so great experiences when I was a new tech, but have had a great team and OR to work with for the past 8 years or so now. Just have to recognize if you are in a toxic situation and remove yourself from it if you don't think it will get better.
love your channel. I would like to pick your brain on how to prepare for the start of clinicals (outside of aseptic technique), and how to prep for the certification exam
Doing this video made me think of making a vid about preparing for clinical's actually, so I think i will be posting that one next ^^ As far as preparing for your certification exam, I would just say go over ALL study material over the past year of school. It is your schools job to prepare you properly for taking the national exam, and the reading/ study material they provide is always very helpful. I found the practice exams very helpful as well.
What if you don't get hired at the hospital that your externship is at? I really want to pursue this career, but I don't like the fact that it seems like you have to put all of your eggs in one basket as far as getting a job.
I didn't get hired from my externship site. There are many avenues of employment you can take with a CST. You said in your other comment that you have no problem moving for a job, you shouldn't have a problem at all.
Please help me deal with mean surgeons, I mean rude surgeons. I just graduated and went to work, thank you very much for your help during school.
Hi so I’ll been looking for a good school or program in Chicago for about a year and I can’t seem for find one that comes highs recommend. Any ideas???
John wood has the program one by Peoria I believe
Lexie Wilkerson, did you find any good program? I’m trying to find my best option here in Chicago too.
I live in Australia. I'd love to be a surgical technician. Our surgical technicians are what we call "Enrolled nurses". But ENs are mainly focused on caring for patients and the surgical stuff is only one part of this job. I applied for the EN course (it is NOT a uni degree) several times getting rejected each time. I worked in a few jobs hoping to get into the course, but these jobs were so terrible that I decided the EN course wasn't worth it.
when is a reasonable time to start applying I graduate and take my exam March2018 but im thinking of applying in November or December2017 just because the hiring process can be lengthy and this time period will have more positions available. Is this unrealistic? #newsubscriber 👍
That's a great idea, but keep in mind some hospitals have automatized systems that may kick your application out if you don't have proof of certification yet. If you know someone within the hospital that can put a word in for you so that the administration can bypass the auto system that would help. Or you can start by sending out SPD applications at that time just to find something right away before you take your exam.
Also, thanks for subbing, and welcome to #surgicaltechtips :D
what does spd stand for
sterile processing distribution?
Tasia Harrison sterile processing department. They clean, organize, and sterilize the instruments and trays you will use in the OR. It's a great way to get your foot in the door to working at the hospital.
In Europe (Germany, Austria at least) , you can basically choose your Job.
You said it all.
Thanks
What if you just finish school and you want to move out to state ?
NBSTSA certification is nation wide. I say do it.
How’s the job market now?
Thank you for being so humble!! Definitely brought me back to myself! ❤️
Make a video about your time as a Sterile Processing Technician
Thanks, should help me land that new job in nursing too :)
True!! Frustrating!!
I find that I don't like the OR at all. What other jobs can I do as a CST?
I should also add that I'm not anchored down with a family or anything and I'm willing to travel to get experience in the field.
Thanks for taking the time to make such a helpful video.
Really enjoyed your posts. Thanks
You dropped some really great jewels!!! Thanks a mil!!!
I appreciate your videos so much. Very helpful.
Did you have to take any additional schooling to get into sterile processing? Or was your training as a surgical tech enough for them to hire you?
+BaleshNTP they hired me right out of the chair school. No additional training. In CST school you go over all things in the sterilization process.
Surgical Tech Tips Thanks again. Your videos are awesome, man. Keep it up!
I love this! Thanks so much!
I love this video
Thank you!

Indeed, hah!
I can also proudly say that I am a huge fan of you! You have been an inspirational figure to many; keep up the great content! x
Any advice on getting a job fresh out of school moving to a new city and state?
Do your best to show your dedication to the position and learning every facet of it. Take all of your clinical externship notes and case studies with you to interview as examples to show the director how detail oriented you are.
That was my question as well! I’m relocating to Houston, TX and fresh out of school.
Great video.im about to start my first job out of school at a surgical centre.not so pleased with pay but I took the opportunity anyways
NEVER MAKE AN INTERVIEW PERSONAL!
I'll tell you now!
You will say things that you shouldn't!
Example: What you just said in this video!
You: My ______ had this ______ health problem.
Interviewer: Sorry to hear about your ______!
2 minutes later!
Interviewer : Thank you for coming today.
We will call you when we have reached a decision.
Do you think you got the position!?
NO! YOU DIDN'T!
Know why?
Because in that interview you just violated HIPAA (Heath Insurance portability and accountability act 1996) and reviled PHI (Protected Health Information).
Just because you are interviewing with people in healthcare don't think it is ok for you to state health information about anyone health including yours!
This is true! Regardless of whether they are patients of that hospital or not!
Defenition: HIPAA Law is a US law designed to provide privacy standards to protect patients' medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers. I was giving an example of relating a personal experience in my life as to why I choose the career path I did and answer the interviewers question. I did not give out any personal information. In no way, shape, or form is that a HIPAA violation.
Surgical Tech Tips
Yes it is! Now it doesn't matter if the example you used is true or not.
In your example.
You give out PHI (Protected health Information) when you said you had a brother that came down with a condition and reviled it.
That is a violation of HIPAA, because PHI is extension of HIPAA!
HIPPA is standards for sharing and transmitting health information.
PHI limits access to health information to 'need to know' basis!
No one in an interview need to know about anyone's health problems!
Also it doesn't matter if it's personal to you or not!
Agree to disagree here. I would rather not get into an argument over this. Thank you for the comments though.
The HIPAA Rules apply to covered entities and business associates.
Individuals, organizations, and agencies that meet the definition of a covered entity under HIPAA must comply with the Rules' requirements to protect the privacy and security of health information and must provide individuals with certain rights with respect to their health information. If a covered entity engages a business associate to help it carry out its health care activities and functions, the covered entity must have a written business associate contract or other arrangement with the business associate that establishes specifically what the business associate has been engaged to do and requires the business associate to comply with the Rules’ requirements to protect the privacy and security of protected health information. In addition to these contractual obligations, business associates are directly liable for compliance with certain provisions of the HIPAA Rules.
If an entity does not meet the definition of a covered entity or business associate, it does not have to comply with the HIPAA Rules. See definitions of “business associate” and “covered entity” at 45 CFR 160.103.
In the example where he's talking about his brother in an interview, his brother isn't his patient, therefore he isn't a covered entity, and therefore no HIPAA or PHI rules are violated.
Tummyboxx Just like to guy in the video!
You need to talk to your supervisor and be retrained!
