I have worked in NY and PA as staff and as a traveler. Neither the hospitals (nor staffing agencies) know the difference between NCCT & NBSTSA. All they want to know is are you certified. I've never had a problem getting a job and I have NCCT ST-C because that's all my school offered. Thanks for this video.

I dont know if it's because this video is older, but he's incorrect about the NCCT. Hospitals in states that require certification will accept either. Anyone that has an NCCT will tell this. They never differentiate between the two. NCCTs ARE in fact nationally reconized and can work in every state.
I've never heard of a "certificate raise", but if they didn't give a raise to an NCCT employee but all the NBSTSAs got one, I'd say she had grounds for a lawsuit.
EDIT: I also wanted to add that the NCCT is great for non certified employees who have been grandfathered in at a state the started requiring certification after they started working. You can sit for the NCCT exam simply by having experience. That alone is a huge benefit for techs stuck at one hospital because the laws changed after they started working.

With the CE every year, they charge you a $77 fee and you can get the material to read online and eligible to take the test after each reading online as well....it's a shame that even though it says NATIONAL in the title, it's not... I worked very hard for years to get the opportunity to work in an OR... for 2 years I really wondered WHY I couldn't find a job in the OR and I found out why... it was because of my NCCT certification😔.... I feel blessed that someone decided to give me a chance and hired me, even with my certification, I never thought about if possibly there is a pay difference between other techs and I. I wanted to share my experience on this comparison as a 35 year experienced scrub NCCT was the only option that allowed an experience track to obtain certification. NBSTSA does not allow for certification testing based on verifiable experience.
Just thought I would share that difference between the two. For those of us that have been scrubbing since 1985 and work for hospitals that have become magnet facilities, NCCT is our only option for becoming certified surgical techs.
I really enjoy your videos. I find them relevant and informative. Keep up the good work!

And I would also like to add that all military trained surgical techs are far more advanced in their capabilities in the OR that they are most often compared to PA's. But the only certification that they are able to receive is through NCCT. NBSTA is nothing but an oversized bully. The bottom line is that it's wrong for a company to group everything outside their door as a problem. They should focus on certain medical facilities and their practices in letting just anyone profession jump in and do our job.

Here in California there are no requirements for scrubbing. I was trained on the job and got the NCCT after 3 years. I can work in all but a handful of states that explicitly have laws against getting trained on the job. Even in those states there are grandfathering exceptions if you have worked long enough. I am very thankful that I did not pay for a training program that may or may not prepare you for the OR. The OR has a steep learning curve and most of the new grads we hired did not know as much as they thought they did. Some only lasted a couple of months.

I get that, but unfortunately if we don't provide correct acronyms and teach who are certifying bodies, accrediting bodies, and just organizations, like AST people will continue to be confused. That is why so many people don't know about TS-C because it is not used correctly when referring to Tech in Surgery-Certified. Just a suggestion if you are going to help educate.

Some states have chosen to grandfather me in and give me a pass for not having my NBSTA. But recently I was looked over. And I'm so angry about it. With every career that requires schooling (which I believe is highly necessary) a lot of it is thrown out the window because it's on the job training that allows your skills to blossom. The problem is when hospitals allow cna or dental techs to work in the OR and be grouped with the rest of us.
