- 120hp, a lot of kerb weight and only four forward gears. But I had an ex- Formula One driver with me, so surely we wouldn't be the slowest car out there? Let the fun begin.
Best show ever? Get David Coulthard, Chris Harris and Guy Martin and tell them to do what they want...
YES!
Post-Race Beers with Chris Harris and David Coulthard should be a regular prime time show
First time I've seen this side of David Coulthard. Had no idea he is so witty and funny, what a cool guy! If ever there could be one, he would make a great replacement for JC on Top Gear!
He's Scottish. What do you expect? Of cause he's funny. Glad Cris parked the suit again. Not fitting for him.
the man with the crazy face made me so happy. im not sure why. the pureness of the competition, the joy you can see in his actions. i know your grin was also massive Mr. Harris; mine sure was.
It's like when you're driving down the motorway in a very slow car racing your mate who's also in an awfully slow car struggling to get past 80 😂
@@jasonlongo6823 I once raced a Mercedes w124 220 16valve estate, against a volvo 945 turbodiesel, with a screwdriver tuned injection pump, and i lost...i dont think we even got up to 160kph before we had to brake ;´)
@@oljefri hahah brilliant
lol these guys are hilarious together!!! Top tier banter.
Top GEAR banter.
@@RgW00D Damn. BBC should pair the two of them together.

Great seeing DC swearing and acting like a proper racing driver having a laugh with his mates
".....she's not a climber...." I was crying.
She's a gusher...
"Over steer will come right before impact" - Bahaha, made me laugh so hard!
LOL Coulthard is hilarious!
These two on topgear world kill me
Good point man, they would be great!
Hahaha David is so hilarious :D really awesome guy :D
Bitburger - Bitte ein Bit' had me laugh really hard :D Great stuff, Chris :D
Indeed! :D
This is how they say it in some regions for sure!!
That is almost [racing stuff aside] what my step-grandfather brought back from his '63 trip to Europe, and drove well into the 1990's. He served with the Marines in WW-1, and later, in 1941, he became a Drill Sargent for the US Army, as the Marines didn't accept recruits older than 40. Thus he was involved with both World Wars, yet only served in the first.
His Mercedes was his pride and joy, and I was lucky enough to ride in it a good 20 times in the late 60's-early 70's as a kid. The Vertical Speedo/Tach was always fun to watch, and the seats were incredible. I can't say much of the handling, other than it made my dad's Fords seem, um, sluggish in corners. I would later find a similar ride in my parent's Volvo 240 DL, in the mid 70's..
stick a big V8 in this, and a decent gearbox, it'd be awesome.
Ls swap it sure sure
Someone did this. They swapped the 5.5L m113 engine in and you can actually buy these cars with the swap done.
A set of tyres that don't "look like they came off the back of a caravan" might be required too. 11:50
""Well driven by the way."
Lmao why did the other driver look like an alien 14:45
Nomex face mask.
Phillz f
It should have been a diesel.
Need more Chris & David in your episodes. The 2 of them are a blast to watch.
Chris, you need a new competent sound technician.
thumbs up if you agree...
Fantastic Mr Coulthard, Mr Harris... Funnier then top gear and better driving!
DC is an absolute class act .. and always has been. Great to see 2 of my faves together. Wouldn't it be great to see the Monkey and DC on Top Gear ... hmmmm .. My fave 'Chris Harris on cars' vid without doubt.
The gear he blew up was 3rd not 2nd, the trans blew up not the diff. Definitely sounds like a missed shift but he's too embarrassed to admit it
I imagine they sound similar
he broke it intentionally because he didn't want to go around the ring with a dangerously slow car. nasty, but simple. I am a bit sorry for that German man that worked on it, but hey..
DC is a total arsehole in this episode. Where are his balls? So nice that you are "sorry" for the German restorer. You mindless twat.
they should use a 300 sel 6.8 next time ;)
Does anyone know if Chris ever drove the 6.3 "Red Sow"?
"That car was absolutely fine when I brought it back in, and you shagged it in one gear change!"
I absolutely love the fact that so many professionals respect Chris. So many cheesy and untalented journalists out there, but Chris nails it every time and that consistency gives him serious credibility. Go Chris!
Apart from seeing the old girl break down, that was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
V
It looks like a German '57 Chevy.
The car that Coulthard used to drive was revving up to 17,000rpm so don't blame him for pushing the Benz very hard
Hehehe! Great car and drivers, plus this could be a great series "Classic Ring Laps" or something. But even if that's a no go, at least I now know I don't want a Lotus Elise. I want a Fintail Merc
I love David. He´s on very much the same page as Kimi Raikkönen, just a whole bit more open.
Great guy.
How about Mika Häkkinen
Damn, Chris and David make a great team. This was epic, I can't wait for them actually complete the race in something faster. Please do it!
14:42
LOLOLOLO. ET came back, and he drives a Merc!!!
Was that Lauda wearing the face mask in the 300? Very unlikely, but I got a bit of a spook it might be true ...
Reminds me of a friend's 190SL that I drove in 1967 from Chapel Hill over to Danville, VA, and back. Bog slow. No sweet spot on the cam. Vague steering and brakes. Not much fun, really.
Love it. Great video, and a classic quote from Mr. Coulthard. "Oversteer will come just before impact."
My Grand Dad bought one new. He took delivery at the factory. Then spent a Month long touring vacation.
M B then shipped it to the New Jersey docks in the USA in 1965. I was 8 years old at the time. Great trip down Memory Lane!!
Go find Ewy Rosqvist and she'll drive that Benz 220SE to victory, I know she might have a couple miles on her by now, but she took the championship and beat a time record --- in this car. Buck up chaps, a little lady raced the wheels off this machine.
love the sly innuendoes everywhere ;)
Coulthard is hilarious! hahahaha
I do hope they do some sort of race/test again in the near future, great episode!
Coulthard is fucking hilarious lmaoooo
I was dying when you heard the damn thing go kaput and he pulled over right out of the pit lane! 😂😂😂
I don't think the car was built for speed there Mr. Harris
Who says that Germans don't have a bit of humor in them?
"Knock wood"....and he's hitting his own head☺.
Dave is such a lad.
What a great video. DC is a funny bastard. Great stuff. Did these two go back and race the following year?
The bit at 14:37 with the other fintail is what happens when you're driving down the M1 for a weekend away and you catch up to the other car full of your mates by surprise 😂😂
As he pulls out onto the track ,it's only running on 5 cylinders,no wonder it is slow. and why the guys were checking so closely under the hood when David pulled in.
Loved the video, but disappointed that neither Chris or Coulthard are wearing HANS devices. As a channel promoting racing and racing safety I feel that you all should set an example for everyone by being as safe as you can. After all, there are plenty of amateur racers and DE drivers that don't know or think they need a HANS device until they get in a serious accident.
But what was Mercedes thinking entering a long distance rally car, from when reliability over distance was more important than speed, in a circuit race?
I would have thought Mercedes had something historical in their staple that would fit the event a little more appropriately... Still it is always fun to hear Harris narrate a car related experience.
It's to warn people that a car is entering in the pit-lane.
You should go to the 24H of the Nürburgring, the beep is constantly ringing, with so many cars in the pit refueling and changing drivers and others cars going flat out on the track along the pit lane, what a show! This typical beep sound is forever linked to the Nurburgring for me.
Wouldn’t that be great with a C63 v8 fitted 🐺 in 🐑 clothing 😎👌🏻
Everybody shits his pants when it comes to driving this car, including Jeremy Clarkson who says, it simply has to much power and Chris Harris drives it like... Harrismonkey is used to drive: Kickin' it sideways like it's nothing. This man is incredible.
From DC that was expected, hey DC if you read this, you were lucky Shumi didnt put your face as cakelike in Spa, only a blind didnt see what you done. Never like your vibe, and never will. Chris always top level men, your 512TR film was priceless.
Great video, too bad you guys couldn't finish the race. BTW, was that an 1800Ti or TiSA? The TiSA (if it was one) was a factory race car with all sorts of lightened bits all over the car, unlike the converted street car you guys were driving.
Is it just me? Or is David's head AT LEAST 3 feet off of his shoulders?
He probably has the longest Human neck of all time.
DC & CH make an interesting set...and that siren sound(7:38) is interesting too. Sounds like the Intergalactic police.
Even though the car was crap and Chris was the slowest I really enjoyed this video.
Chris and David seemed to get on very well and lets face it David is a funny guy, sence of humour is spot on.
Nice one Drive
Coulthard is so funny :)
It's hard to blame anybody, i'm sure if Sebastien Vettel got in that car the same thing would of happened. Old cars break down, easy as that. Cool to see Coulthard though! Is he still commentating F1?
2 classy guys racing a rediculously slow car and not a negative word about the car.A lot of asses who call themselves race car drivers could learn a lot about being a gentleman from these 2 guys.
He's just Sean Connery II. Breaks cars, breaks hearts. Would not want him to do the opening stint on endurance race. Guy spun off on the warm-up lap in the lead! :-) Gotta like him though, good sport.
David Coulthard is probably one of the best people around racing. RB respects him and calls him to drive on their events, Mercedes as well, all in all no one ever said bad word about him :)
Chris, you should have stuck with your jeans and a T-shirt..! 😂
At 6:06 can anyone identify the car? It's either a Porsche 924 Carrera GT or a 944 modified to have a badgeplate vent system and bonnet air dam. The camera was a little blurry at that point, so I couldn't identify it on the rear arch/wings alone.
I'm a 944 S2 owner so this just caught my eye immediately!
What actually broke? W111 220SE's have the swing axle rear end, and the gearbox is the same basic transmission as used in the gullwings (3 of them are in back ground towards the end) minus the oil pump. Also, the reason it was going so slow was probably the extra weight of the massive roll cage and the engine running on 5 cylinders.
It is so cool to see the old girl "at speed". I grew up in a 220. I remember my father taking the long, slow climbs up Highway 17 from Santa Cruz followed by chaotic down hill run to San Jose with my father's constant stating the cars brakes were overheating. The end of your video was predictable, as our baby blue '65 220 broke several times over the years.
Loved that. So, free idea - yourself and David racing an old DTM car? You've done the f50, f40, 512tr and that, logic dictates you're heading toward old DTM and B spec rally cars :P
Perhaps if you're American, but not if you're English. Next time you want to look smart, perhaps do a little research in the subtleties of language; or perhaps just enjoy the video...
Steering? "Yes it has a floating agent" and "oversteering comes just before impact". This David guy is funny. Is he pretty famous? And can /Drive pull him in as a regular?
since we lost Best Motoring ... DRIVE videos are the best !!!
especialy Chris Harris videos
Aaaand ... next year they should come back with one of them Gullwings !!!!
I like DC but always thought he seemed a bit up tight. This video has changed my mind! Awesome pairing of drivers. Definitely need to see round 2 in a faster car!
I have to confess, I didn't know why some older cars had an inner ring on the steering wheel until Coulthard mentioned the horn as he pressed it. Petrolhead fail.
Pendejos when you will have another go?
Anyone know what is that sound that is always there in Nurburgring pitlane?
magical! How was the banter! Absolutely pissing myself watching this! Hard to pretend im doing work when I'm laughing so much! Great work guys.
Poor old girl! I love the Mercedes fintails.. sad to see her break down like that. This video made for an unhappy evening, David is a great guy though.
Looking at chris drive. I think it will be easier for him to just sit facing backwards. Never seen anyone look at the rear-view mirror that much.
Just got a Halfords ad saying they could fit a headlamp bulb from as LITTLE as £6.99. Nice work Halfords, that's more than the cost of bulb.
One thing i've learned in my limited track experiences...
If their helmet has a drink tube attached...You're going to get ravaged sandily.
Looking forward to your LeMans in a D Type report
im sure he has enough expertise on hand to give him all the technical information he needs ... dont waste our time by commenting with this guff trying to make yourself look important.
Great video! I really hope you two make a followup with a more powerful car!
Was the consultation price David suggested perhaps one out off 3 girls standing off camera Chris? :D
Chris got a little choked up there at the end. Dude is the real deal, I look forward to all of his videos. He reminds me of Harry Metcalfe.
Wait, where's the punch-line to that pathetic joke of a vehicle? All this proves is that I will watch anything with Chris Harris in it.
1. Historical Electric cars were silly fast
2. David, please get Chris' autograph for me also please!
3. Definitely redo next time around
That would be an NSU Prinz race car actually not a trabant ;)
And believe me, this thing was FAST in its time! And it still is right now... Definitly not a Trabant ;)
My grandpa had exactly the same model and color, then my dad painted it dark blue. So lovely sound despite it being a luxury tourer.
i guess no one remembers The Car Show on Speed ..
it was adam carolla and matt farah and another dude...
that show was okay.. but cancelled after one season...
Harris is such a gentleman, especially compared to Coult.
I seriously believe that Peter Windsor and Chris Harris have the two best motoring shows around. They're also both on youtube.
"But we're in a class of three cars apparently .. Prepare yourself for third .. " Hilarious. Well done guys, once again.
it looks like the trunk latches are off a Yeti cooler
Should have done it with the 190d. Although kudos for doing it, I happened to be sitting, and all of a sudden had a thought, I'd like to see a fintail on the nurburgring. Seeing how few fintail videos there are, surely not. But, Just simple searching "Mercedes Nurburgring" and here it is third result.
Hahaha is that a facial twitch Chris - you blink every time you get passed!
Super fun to watch that tank lap the ring
That sound always comes up when a car enters the pit-lane! :-)
Kind of annoying when theres a 24h race going on :-D
Loved the other Merc driver at around 15 giving a thumbs up and wave, the pure enjoyment of the moment. So good.
now thats a proper gentlemans race when both drivers can give friendly greetings to each other on a straight
Only if Tiff takes some meds and calms the fuck down. Love the dude, but he can be a bit much some times.
I hope they come back with a 190 evo those 90s DTM cars were a other level around the Ring .the Sonax 190 would be epic
remove the roll cage put back bumpers and a full leather interior, i want that car for everyday driving
Why do I get the feeling their final talk has a hint to them giving it the Eiffel tower to some ladies.
David is gonna get Chris in trouble, haha. Those damn party boy race car drivers haha. Great video guys
